ET hangs Linux: Dual Opteron 246 with Radeon 9800 Pro

(Zaedyn) #1

I haven’t found a configuration yet that won’t cause my linux system to hang moments after starting ET. I’m running a Dual Opteron 246 with a Radeon 9800 Pro (Sapphire I think).

I’ve tried kernels 2.6.8 and 2.6.11. I’ve tried the k7 smp kernel and the k8 one. Although I can’t get any hardware acceleration on the K8 kernel.

Has anyone gotten this combination to work? I have problems with other 3D games also, so I know it’s just not ET, but I’m hoping you guys will have some suggestions for me.

I can run fgl_glxgears fine, so something is working.

I can also start ET and even run a map for a few seconds before it crashes. So it’s something that happens after a certain amount of time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PB ?

It’s interesting you mention PB because running “pb_sv_enable” causes the game to crash. I don’t believe I have PB enabled yet on this install, though.

Also, I get very similar behaviour when I start up Neverwinter Nights. It plays fine a minute or less, and then the whole system hangs.

I can still ssh in to the machine, but if I try to kill the process, the machine no longer responds in any form.

So I’m thinking it’s a general graphics driver thing and hoping some of you have had some experience with this. :???:
