ET:Fortress mod released

(DG) #1

ET:Fortress was released yesterday, likely reason for no thread here is this place seemed to collapse, at a guess due to all the people clicking the link to download ET (which lead to the SD download mirror page).

The mod is a Fortress one, very much in the style of Q3F. Since the mod’s official site still cant take the strain (thanking ye slashdot), I collected together some of the screenshots I’d uploaded to the rtcw.co.uk webby and stuck them up here. fortress university has a basic guide and some tutorials.

List of download mirrors at planetETF.

I’ve been playing a bit now and it’s OK, a fun fast action CTF game.

From my newbie perspective it does seem the guns are a bit unbalanced, with some it takes ages to frag somebody and then there is the one shot/kill sniper rifle :???:

There also seems to be a lot less of cooperation possible between classes compared to ET.

It also has this retro look to it, which is understandable as they ported old QTF maps and maybe even from older games, but they could have done better I feel with the ET engine.

I had some expectations for this mod and they aren’t shattered yet, just some first impressions

I’ve just found out that Splashdamage has also an etf server:
217.158.151.17:27960

(Salteh) #5

Two ETF servers actually :stuck_out_tongue:
217.158.151.17:27961 is the 2nd one.

If anyone’s been on there, what did you think of the server? and lag / ping problems?
Just been on myself, feels good

Well, its a bit like tribes etc., where you can’t expect to kill the heavy class in a light one. The classes aren’t balanced in the sense that each one is supposed to have a fairly equal chance of killing the other. A recon trying to headon with a minigunner should die. The sniper does seem pretty brutal tho. Also, with quick respawns, dying isn’t such a big deal. Doing 5 suicide runs to clear out the enemies sentries around their flag is a perfectly valid tactic.

There also seems to be a lot less of cooperation possible between classes compared to ET.

A lot of the current chaos is probably because there is a large number of noobies. While the direct cooperation like reving/giving ammo isn’t there as much, you do need a proper combination of classes working together.

It also has this retro look to it, which is understandable as they ported old QTF maps and maybe even from older games, but they could have done better I feel with the ET engine.

Agreed. The first person weapons struck me as pretty blah, as did some of the effects (conc, poison etc). But really, since most players dumb down the looks of their game anyway, it doesn’t strike me as a big deal.

I played for quite a few hours last night, and had a blast, despiting not having played a lot of TF games in the past.

ETF feels like home

I’m not a big fan tbh, i keep getting the feeling that its almost really good, but actually nothing grabs me at all about it. I dont think i had a single point of thinking “weeee this is fun!”, and everytime ive finished playing i’ve decided not to play it again - it’s only later i get determined to give it yet another go.

I’ve no idea why some people call it a fast game, i find it really very slow. certainly in ET a 1v1 will be over far more quickly.

pretty much everyone I’ve seen discussing it has either really loved it or just not been interested at all. Way I see it thats a good thing (no use in everybody just liking it a bit), but dissapointing for me that i’m not one of the ones who are really into it.

i was a HUGE Q3F player. but ETF just doesnt feel right. or play right. it just feels like they could have improved over q3f, but really missed out on some great opportunities. Q3F > ETF imo.

(bani) #10

could you be more specific? what exact opportunities did they miss out on?

I finally made an autoexec a few weeks back, but had to remove it because most commands have changed in ETF (even weaponbanks didn’t work). :disgust: Also, the grenade system is a bit annoying…

Jumping has a different feeling to it compared to RtCW/ET/Q3A Demo (the only Q3 I’ve played :P), you can no longer affect your direction mid air (unless you stand still when you jump).

I hope ETF becomes more successful than Wolftactics, but personally I don’t like it any better. :frowning:

(Sauron|EFG) #12

Double post, weird things are going on here!

(DG) #13

just put a blank autoexec.cfg in ETF to stop it loading the etmain one.
if thats what the problem was

anyway i suggest anyone to do that after installign the mod but before the first run, since i really doubt you want ur et config in etf.

I downloaded this a few mins after the release just to see what it was like and I do think it will have a community (unlike the RTCW mod Wolf Tactics).

I think anyone who likes this style of game will like or love it but for the RTCW/ET players I don’t think it as got the same height of co-operation what ET can have bewteen players and the objectives seem a little bland IMO.However it isn’t aimed at RTCW/ET players really although I am sure some will play it (like me sometimes) and the game cost nothing to play so you can’t be too fussy.

I think overall for the people they aimed the game at they have done a good job.

See you on there sometime Salteh

I didnt like it at all. Assuming its just the game style that bugs me, theres still plenty wrong with it
How about setting health and armour indicators as percentages so medics and engies know straight away whether you need help for starters?

(sTiNkFiZzLe) #16

lol…you know its almost a direct port right?

My post over at the http://www.etfgame.com forums:

AS-Protocore is a UT2004 Map.

The show consists of three departments (PC games, Console games and Maxx).
And is devided in several takes.
So I’m not sure when the take about ETF will take place.
