ET for Mac OS X, several problems, help appreciated

Hi,

New to the forums here, but I’m having quite a time trying to get ET to work on my 12" Powerbook G4 1ghz, 1.25 gig RAM running OS X v10.4.6. It seems that every installer I’ve downloaded has been corrupted, or the install process is being corrupted in some way. But, after every time I try to install a new version I get the same errors. First it says “Wolfenstein could no continue”, “Couldn’t load default.cfg - I am missing essential files - verify your installation?” That message turns out to be correct, there is no default.cfg file installed to the etmain folder every time. So, I open a textedit doc, and change the extension to .cfg leaving the doc blank and put it in the etmain folder.

That solves the first problem, and now a new problem crops up when I run the program again, this time it loads to an orange screen, and backs out to finder in a lower resolution with the message “Wolfenstein cannot continue”, “Recursive error ‘menu file not found: ui/menus.txt, using default’ after: menu file not found: ui/menus.txt, using default” and the program closes once I click “ok.” And once again, I find there is no subfolder ‘ui’ in etmain. So I create that folder and add to it another blank textedit doc named menus and rename the extension to .txt.

Another run of the game starts with the same orange screen, and briefly flicks out to the finder, then starts back up with the id, splashdamage videos, etc. Once the videos finish I’m presented once again with an orange screen with a horribly corrupted menu.

I’ve been trying different things for hours. The best result I got was from unpacking every .pk3 file to the etmain directory, which gives me the real default.cfg, a ui folder, etc. This allows me to see the menus, still with the orange background, but the buttons are now visible. However, when I load the server list and attempt to enter a game I’m given an error message “Error”, “Could not open an official pak file - verify your installation and check for updates”.

Some other points of interest are the loader at the beginning, it always says “0 files in pk3 files” when I know for certain every one of the .pk3 files in the etmain folder contain data.

I’m spent on ideas. I’ve tried all of these steps with several different versions of the wolfet2.60-2.dmg file from various sites including the official site to no avail.

Any assistance provided would be greatly appreciated. If any more information is needed I’ll see what I can do to provide it, though it really does seem hopeless.

The default.cfg error mostly pops up when the “current directory” is not the Wolfenstein folder. (At least it does in Windows and Linux)

There are ways to fix it using some exotic command parameters, but starting W:ET from the Wolfenstein folder could do the trick. You might even want to use a command prompt to make sure, just ‘cd’ your way to the folder and launch W:ET.

If that would work, check your shortcut to see what directory it starts the game in.

I know a few people have had a similar problem, a forum search might turn up something useful. I know it can be done, since I did run it on a mac. I think kamikazee is on the right track that it is a pathing issue of some kind. I doubt it has to do with a corrupt installer. It might be a file permissions problem. You need to check both the install directory and the one under your home directory.

You DO NOT need to unzip the .pk3 files.
