ET.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...

Hi,

After playing ET for 3 years now i have never had any trouble playing et, but now after i reinstalled windows, i installed et, and now i open it and get the error:
“ET.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”
i have windows XP and i tried to stop the firewall from blocking et, and i tried updating PB but it didnt work…

heres my computer specifics:

AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3000+
1536 mb ddr (3 of 512)
ATI Randeon 9800 Pro

on every post i get about this error is with vista, so can you please help me?

Try to run it as administrator. (Rightclick --> proportions. Then it should be somewhere in the window)

i’m sorry i dont have that, like i said i have windows XP, not vista.

What if you open et as a server does? The only thing you need to do is make a shortcut to et.exe. Right click on that shortcut and select properties. And then change < “C:\Program Files\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\ET.exe” > to < “C:\Program Files\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\ET.exe” +set dedicated “2” +exec server.cfg >
When you open et with this shortcut you should see the ET Console. Post what’s in there. Maybe it displays an error.

I guess you added exec preset_high.cfg in the shortcut to et.exe? Maybe is there a false command?

and my clan only has a 2.56 server…

Maybe it’s your Graphics card drivers?? Because this game is so old and GPU technology is moving so fast you must update your drivers regularly… I Googled your problem and found most of the results came up as graphics drivers or firewall settings. Lets do the graphics drivers first.

Your card is a ATI Randeon 9800 Pro, here is the link for all the updates…

Now your firewall, could you post what virus / protection program you are using? I know that if the server has PunkBuster you need to ‘Allow’ PnkBstrA or PnkBstrB. Also if you ran the PBudate program ( pbsetup.exe ) you must run it as Administrator.
Also your ET.exe has to be set with Administrator privileges… Some of these answers were already given so if you could try these and get back to us it will be very helpful.

I have had this error before but my GPU’s are on auto update so maybe this has to be set on the ATI control panel??

reinstalled windows , sp3 or sp2? and patched?
also update directx drivers

I Fixed the problem! for some reason the drivers of ati are ‘too new’ to use for et…
i didnt have to upgrade it, which i had already done when reinstalling windows.
but degrade it to one of the earlier releases, now it works fine :wink:

Which version did you install? And do you still have the download link? (There’s a lot of untrusty downloads of catalyst).
