ET Crashes with multi-display setup.

I’m having the weirdest trouble running ET. In the past, it forced me to quit playing, but I recently decided to try getting it working again.

When I run ET, I get the gray game screen that comes just before the opening movie. Then, it gives me the standard “Windows has encountered an error blah blah blah” error and I can’t get past that point. IF I disable my 3rd display, it works.

The thing that’s really strange is that it used to work fine without changing the display settings. And even more bizzare, it stopped working without me changing any settings or drivers. I was playing ET one day and it crashed mid-game (it almost never crashed for me before that) with a strange error message about a texture. From that point on, I could never run it with the 3rd display enabled again.

Recently, I completely repartitioned and formatted the machine. So, I figured that I could get ET working again. Whatever oddness that was there previously should be gone now, right? Wrong. ARG!

My main card is a 9700 Pro. It runs two monitors. My third display runs off a PCI ATI XPert 128. Piece of junk, but it works find for 2D. The system is a p4 2.53ghz. 1GB DDR RAM. I have no trouble with any other 3D games, just ET.

Any ideas?

At the time of the original issue, I was running some 3.x Catalyst. Tried all available at the time, with no effect. This time around, I tried with the latest Catalyst as of a week ago.

The first time around, I also tried changing to that optimized Catalyst. Omega, I think?

Nothing has any effect. Driving me nuts.

For my multi-monitor needs I use UltraMon 2.5. Though I have only 2 monitors attached I don’t have any problems at all, maybe try that proggie? It’s sharewhere but you have a full featured 30 days trial. If it does the job, for 40$ and the multitude of options it’s really nice.

Give it a try. Who knows…

I actually do use UltraMon. I couldn’t live without being able to drag maximized windows between displays.

I tend to have my 2nd monitor disabled when I’m gaming and I don’t have any trouble. Don’t know if that’s an option for you though.

That’s the only thing I can do to make it work now. I normally leave chat windows open on other monitors and watch them while I’m playing games though, so it’s very inconvenient to disable them. It’s just frustrating since only ET does this, and all my other dx/gl games work fine with the multi-display.
