ET crash - sound loops too

pleeeeease help me!
i installed RTCW ET today (twice) and after between 2 and 30 seconds the game crashes, completely freezes and the sound loops about a second over and over again.
i have to ctrl alt delete to get out, ive registered with so many forums just to try and sort this. if you got any ideas pls email modgm@hotmail.com or post here incase any others have the same problem.

It sounds like it’s definitely PB causing your problems.

It’s a known problem that there are several workarounds/fixes for:

  1. Make sure you PB client is up-to-date. Get PBWEB.EXE from the Evenbalance site, put it in your pb directory, and run it. It will download all the latest files.

  2. Try running ET again.

  3. If that doesn’t work, start up the game locally, enter “/pb_system 1” at the console and then join a server.

  4. If that doesn’t work, if you’re running winXP, run ET in win98 compatible mode.

One of those should fix you up. GL!

I had the same problem, found out that ET hates video card heat. Sure all other games and programs run fine, but ET is very sensitive for some reason. Try cleaning your video card fan and HS with a can of compressed air suitable for cleaning pc parts.

I found I had to underclock my 800mhz athlon to fix this problem…

My roommate gets this, especially now that its summer and the ambient temp in our apartment is pretty damn hot. Even my liquid cooling system seems to eat water twice as fast as any other season.
