ET and Win XP 64 ?

(clayton4115) #1

hi all

with the announcement of Windows XP 64 bit, im just wondering if ET will work on win xp 64?

if anyone has played on 64, how is it?

thx

the x86_64 Architecture is 32 compatible. that means, you can play all 32 Bit games on it.
But if there comes a Version that is optimized for 64Bit, it will be great.

Enemy Territory is Compatible, Punkbuster is not. So unless you want to play on non PB servers that’s a no.

(PlayX) #4

on linux x86_64 it runs with PB

Farcry has a special patch for 64-bit processors resp. Windows XP Professional x64 (1 GB downlaod!) and they gained around 5% more fps, together with an increase of image quality.
And Punkbuster is part of Farcry too, so it should work on 64-bit.

(Zenix) #6

They are supposedly working on a patch to make ET PB work in 64 bit, untill that’s out, it’s a no go.

(Salteh) #7

Have they actually released that patch?
Tried to find it ages ago, but no luck -_-

“ooh ooh we have a 64b ver of Far-Cry, but we’ll never give it to you muahahah!”

(Zenix) #8

Yeah, the FarCry patch just came out recently. www.planetamd64.com has info on it.

(Salteh) #9

Hehe… may 10 ?
I think they have been going on about this patch for more than a year

Thanks for the link! :moo:

The official download page for AMD64 is here. Requires registration, but you can use something like bumpymail.com.

Do you already have Windows XP Professional x64? There is no download available for the upgrade (you can get it on CD, only the 120 days test version is available as download).

(Salteh) #11

I installed the test version about 102 days ago

ima wait till all apps come to 64bit b4 gettin a 64bit processor and x64

(DWM|Commando) #13

hey gusy i’m no computer lingo guy or anything so what does the 32 bit and 64 bit mean? lol holds head in shame

(xamil) #14

So is there binary for linux for amd64? If yes then where can i get it?

(leifhv) #15

It means different things for different cpu architectures. For the AMD/Intel architecture 64-bit mode is mostly about increased memory space which doesn’t help game performance for any current games at least.

The 64-bit patch for FarCry is a marketing gimmick for AMD. Yes, it improves the game but they could have done the same improvements to the 32 bit version if they wanted to.

I don’t see much point to a 64-bit version of ET unless the 32-bit version doesn’t work under a 64-bit OS.

Having CPUs with multiple cores (or multiple CPUs) will be much more important than 64-bit mode for good performance in future games (for instance ETQW I should think).

(Rhoades) #16

how can one tell if one has a 64 bit processor?

(kamikazee) #17

Since they are clearly on the market as 64 bit ones. You’ll probably notice it in price as well.

(SCDS_reyalP) #18

In the case of AMD64 (and Intels copy of it) you also get more general purpose registers, which often gives an increase in performance. OTOH, 64 bit programs typically larger too, which can work against you.

(Rhoades) #19

well how do you check what kind one has in one’s computer because it came with the computer.

(xamil) #20

Download an 64bit application and try to run it. If you can run it then yu have 64bit procesor.

About 64bits applications and games - it gives an increase in performance. But in most cases this is an little boost becouse writing application for 64bits procesor is a new thing so most of application are not optimalized to run with this new procesor. They work but they dont use all his power. I’ve notice perfomance increase in many applications and games.

And about ET. So there is no 64 bit binary for this game? There is also second think why there should be 64bits binary. With 32 bits i have mess in my ssystem becouse i need to have also 32 bits libraris or an whole 32bits chroot enviroment.
