Until now I was a proud owner of a DSL connection, I had to change appartments so i cancelled my subscription and now I got a ISDN connection. To my surprise , my latency improved 50 ms! From having a 100-130 ping to 60-80 ( not in ET, but other multiplayer games, like RTCW,Beach demo, Unreal, CS, Colin McRae) I thought perfect! now i ll be the 50 ms bastard that kills you in the twink of an eye, WRONG . My latency didnt improve at all, it got bad, very bad… From having 100 ms to having 400, WTF!!! I recall posting about the same problem months ago , i was trying to help a friend who also loves wolfenstein, but noone could help, so he just QUIT PLAYING!!! SO PLEASE!!! HELP MEEEEEE!!! Why does ET have the ISDN option if it is unplayable!! (at least for the two of us) I would like to continue playing ET, so is there anyone with the same problems, or maybe a solution??
ET and ISDN like FIRE and ICE
As an experiement, grab a free copy of ASE (All Seeing Eye), get the latest ET-Pro 3.01 mod and filter out all non UK / ET Pro 3.01 servers and try again. Is your ping still dreadful?
As my m8 already suggested, Only connect to servers which give you a relative low ping.
Also make sure you only play on servers which use ETPro 3.0.1 or higher and have antilag enabled.
wot difference will that make?!?!
BTW i have cable, but its crap and i get the same speeds as ISDN, i hate to think wot the 56k would be like with my provider
I’ve UK ISDN, and its generally OK. Definately in “playable” area >90% of the time - unless you think youre supar l33t.
The ASE suggestion is actually liable to be the best one, seems to be a lot more reliable than ingame browser (which always gives me >300 for the “best” server on first runs). The ETPro 3.01+suggestion is also good, because they have a pretty decent antilag coding, though sometimes it does feel very, weird/wrong (?) and bit too often you have to stop and stand still to let it sort itself out. Meant to be significantly improved in the test versions/next release. As a bonus, the hitsounds make it somewhat easier to get to grips with lag etc because you can see what hits.
Fairly simple thing to do is make sure you set good ISDN connection settings in ET, setting it to default ISDN is fine but then swap “rate” to 7000 for 64k ISDN (14000 if its 128) via console or “.cfg”. If youre trying to use clan voice comms, err forget it on 64k, probably do-able with a low-bandwidth codec for 128k if you experiment with rate probably between 7000-10000 or something.
Secondly provider makes a big difference, and this is particular to where you are, even (I gather) a lot more so than DSL etc. For example, BT and Freeserve are EASILY the best of the ones I’ve tried, for other people less than a couple of hundred miles away they suck. Ping is still going to go up and down a lot depending on whats going on about you, not much you can do about that, it’s just because ET really needs quite a fair bit of bandwidth in big busy areas (Fueldump is worst).
FWIW at least compared to UK people with *DSL, 100-130 ping is pretty bad on any normal game. 400 is way off scale even for ISN except in massive games, I get fluctuations between 70-170 in ET, sometimes maybe even 250 for a very breif period. If you start getting really fussy, a decent ISDN TA might help, Asus and especially Eicon were making easily the best ones when I was shopping for one. Quality TA may improve ping, but probably do more for less cpu utilisation and being more reliable.
I have 13 Mbps, so I guess my e-penis is bigger than your e-penis Fenris.
I also played on 28.8 kbps some months ago, with a 400-600 ms ping.
The thing is, now that I have ISDN, i get better latency with every game BUT Enemys Territory!! The servers that appear on the list are all in my area, so I assume they are the fastest … with 400 ping!!
o, you mean in the server browser, not in game? lol yeah its a bit er, fubar for me too. ASE is better in every way anyway, other than sometimes being slow if you didnt pay for it.
er vaguely on topic, is it my infernal ISP routing screwed again? ASE aint connecting to scanner
Nope - I got that tonight as well - it did eventually find an alternative scanner, although for some reason my ET crashed in the middle of Oasis (just when things were getting good as well :/)
er vaguely on topic, is it my infernal ISP routing screwed again? ASE aint connecting to scanner
Only the 2.0 beta test scanner is online atm, try changing scanner ip to 195.156.109.234:27243, unless you want to use the US based Speakeasy one at 64.81.178.54:27243
ehem…
so any ideas? You people using ISDN, did you make any extra settings for playing ET with ISDN? or just the standard ones… I tried once again: i connected to a server , while in spawn time I could spectate the other players and everything was fine, as soon as I get in the game, theres a never-ending CONNECTION INTERRUPTED, but im still connected but cannot move etc…please help.
64k ISDN
set snaps “20”
set rate “7200”
set cl_maxpackets “38”
set cl_timenudge “0”
set cl_predictitems “0”
no idea why i went with 38 over the normal 30 maxpackets, one of those things that seemed a good idea at the time and just havent seen reason to change it years later.
I’m guessing you have isdn because you couldn’t get anything better in your area?
feel so sorry for you lot lol just a few more years ± until bT gives you your god given right to have a nice connection. patience is the key… also etpro’s antilag will help you out abit aswell
thx DG!
I changed the settings like you did, but I couldnt find the last 2 (etconfig right?) and surprise , as soon as I left spectator mode I didnt get the never-ending CONNECTION INTERRUPTED!! My ping went down to 110-130 and I could even shoot a few bullets! I connected to a UK server, so I guess next time when I connect to a server here in Germany my latency will be <100!! (I hope so)
and fusen, I had already DSL but my Latency sucked, but thats not the reason i got ISDN now, i moved to another place and I dont have any money to pay 50-60 euros a month to play online (maybe in a year or so)
thx again!
should have been cg_predictitems :o
don tbother though, those two dont matter much anyway, default will be fine.
False alarm…
In the server list in ET the fastest servers have like 300-400 ping all in my area… well i tried a few ones and at first i get like 250 ping then i get 70 , then 150, then 280, then 500, then 999!!! :banghead:
Then again 70 , then 150, then 280, then 500, then 999!!! :banghead: WTF!! Well at least I dont get the never-ending CONNECTION INTERRUPTED, BUT it is still UNPLAYABLE!!! pls help , dont know what to do
i think the question to ask is : are the settings that were changed actually saved? (assuming they were entered in console)
Oh yeah and would they have to be re-set for et pro, shrub etc?
DG over to you
usually get saved, easy way to be sure is make or edit any existing “autoexec.cfg” file in etmain subfolder, paste your settings in it. Dont think etpro runs the etmain autoexec.cfg, might do if you copy it into etpro folder, else just put “/exec autoexec” into the console occasionally.
Dunno whats going on if your ping is constantly going up tbh, sounds like either very strange networking issues, a wayward process that decides to only misbehave during ET or some leak.
ps. dont use the ingame server browser, anything & everything else is better.
well, thank all of you for ur time, ill try the ASE thing , but honestly I dont think itll help, ASE wont improve latencies (or am i wrong) … i would like to know how many ISDN users have the same problems. Maybe its a ET thing, like I said before the problem first occured a friend of mine, months ago and he quit playing ET so I guess thats gonna happen to me…
