Engineering for Dummies

ok, the funniest thing happened last night. well it wasn’t funny at the time but looking back it is.

I decided to try out cov ops which i have a tendancy to do from time to time. The map was fuel dump. I managed to steal a uniform early on. about the same time as the tunnel grate was destroyed. So i run up the tunnel and up the ladder. all clear. no axis anywhere. Happy days, i spot an engineer hot on my tail.

we move through the tunnel and out the other side. stopping briefly, i check for mines outside the door. all clear. at this point the engineer had already moved down to the door. I move up to the door and open it. then start spotting mines on the other side. none yet. i spot the enemy engineer laying mines around the fuel depot. he has his back turned.

I look around. there is no allied engineer with me. I look at the map. The crazy fool is up at the allied command post. OMG we could win the game in 40 seconds and he’s off getting xp. then he disappears off the map… an enemy engineer was there and had killed him.

meh whatta are u gonna do

by the way fuel dump seems to be the favorite? how bout all you people whats fav map?

My favorite map would probably have to be either Goldrush or Radar… the more I think of it… I’d have to go with Radar.

i do like fuel dump. but gold rush is pretty fun if there aren’t heaps of field ops spamming artillery

radar has the potential to be over far too fast

It seems that people have a bad habit of getting into ET without the slightest clue (ok, I did it too). What really seems to help is, if you are going to try and get a friend into ET, take some time, set up a private server and show him around a bit. I did this for a friend this weekend, and while he is not exactly a top player yet, he seems to have avoided some of the basic newbie traps that people fall into. By the time we hit a public server, he knew the classes, had a basic idea of what the maps were (just the basic 6), and ended up making a pretty good engineer, for someone new to the game. We actually managed to pull off the sneak plant on fuel depot once. Of course, being in the same room helped immensly, but I think that the intro course I gave him really help matters a lot. He also tried out being a medic, and wasn’t half bad, wasn’t half good either, but at least he knew how to revive people, and how to give out health packs.
In all, I think that its partly the fault of current players, that the newbies can be so bad. Take some time to answer their questions, try and give them a bit of guidance (in a non-condecending way), and don’t bad mouth them while playing. Then, of course, come onto the forums and rant about them to your hearts content, its helpful to relase sometimes, but no names.
Just me 2 cents (adjusted for inflation) worth

Ran into something similar, but this was later in the game after we’ve blown both entrances with the tank. We’ve got five guys storming the front followed by two engies. We clear out the defenders up front and start making our way to the west gate. The two engies instead go the entirely other direction towards axis spawn. Needless to say, the next axis spawn the two get mowed down. Meanwhile, we’re holding the west side, already destroyed the gate with satchels, waiting for any engie to waltz in and finish the game.

I /kill, respawn as an engie, and run all the way over there to plant. Two of our guys are still alive and holding the west gate. The two engies, instead, are building the cp, putting mines outside it, and repairing the tank. They were doing fine for the first half of the map. Once we blew the side entrance they suddenly caught a case of the stupid.

Yes new engineers have a real problem of fixing the tank after you have destroyed the bank entrance and always fixing the truck b4 the gold has been secured I now have a big indent on my table where i keep banging my head in frustration.

yep… engies on fueldump… we were holding the west gate for 5 minutes with 4 players: 2 medics, a covop and a fieldop… “GET IN AND PLANT THE DAMN DYNA” … “I need more cover” :banghead:

(Vetinari) #9

…no need to say that he was sitting all the time on the tank doing nothing but watching us…

More funnier it is to throw an airstrike when your entire team is moving forward (e.g. at the depot gate): half of the team is dashing forward to avoid the airstrike and gets wasted by the enemy, the other half steps back, searching cover, and will get wasted in the counterattack after the airstrike. Happend to me several times: each time we tried to attack, our Field Ops throwed an airstrike right before our feet.
