Engine Source

(Jaquboss) #1

Dear Splashdamage, is it possible to release or push somebody to release ( if it doesnt depend on you ) Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Client and server sourcecode ?
Mod teams will really use it and Quake III: Arena sourcecode was already released…
Thanks for anything !

I have to agree. Isn’t it about time we had the ability to fix some of the broken parts of the engine? Surely by now there is no problem with ID Software.

As an AI programmer, I would love to be able to get in there and work with AAS and also fix some of the bugs in the engine (lighting, etc) as well as a lot of other problems I have had while trying to work on mods.

what’s wrong with this: http://www.splashdamage.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=8

What has been said before: that’s the mod’s source code.

They need the actual engine code, which has not been published before.
It took quite a while for the Q3 engine to be released. (Quite logical, if games were still developed on it)

I don’t think it’s up to SD to release the code.

I think RtCW engine source should be released first 'cause ET’s based on RtCW’s engine. Which is based on the Q3 engine.

I think that it would be great if this was possible. I’m sure that it has been discussed before, but it would be great if the developers could comment on this.

it would be a very good thing, ther has already been some interesting tech demos with the q3 engine of new physics and things that could perhaps be used to enhance the ET experience since the next ET is QW and rtcw is likely to have a differnt style of multiplayer to ET

also it would be good to hear something from the developers rather then just having us out here to try. Even if its a no we would at least have an answer. And if it not up to them perhaps some infomration on where we might go if we wanted to persuade someone for the source. I would imagine that its ID that own the right to the engine since they comision the game (i think)

Hardly, since punkbuster will most definitely be removed I really can not see it as enhancing the ET experience. Personally I think the engine source is really only necessary for advancing the renderer or working on new netcode etc and we allready have access to the Q3 engine for that. The engine code is really not that usefull for the game it’s used for but for future projects, like the game Nexiuz is based on the DarkPlace engine wich in turn is based on Q1 engine for example.

good point. i gess it would make tghe game unplayable without develpoin some other anti cheat software that would be more work than modding the engine probably

i would like to see some render modifications though and bring the graphics a bit closer to doom3 standard. would be fun to see at least. if anyone would play it

Punkbuster is good, but it is not the only way to stop cheating.

Anyway, with AI coding, I could really use the ability to debug problems that happen in the engine. Currently all I can get when an error occurs outside the SDK is assembly code.

There are many other reasons I could use the engine code, which I will not get into now, and punkbuster is not at all a serious concern to me.

I beg whoever this decission is to be made by, to make it quickly.

you can always buy a licence
