Enemy Glowing
and again, that is not a valid point.
Enemies already have red nameplates and a healthbar on top of their head.
that is enough visibility, no need to ruin the visuals by adding that damn glow.
I still dont see a single valid reason to keep the halos/rim lightning.
Correct me if I’m wrong but from what I’v seen enemies DON’T have nameplates and healthbar until you’re aiming at them. Nameplates I’m not even sure I’ve seen them for enemies.
As I’ve pointed, these rim lights were there at least at E3 2010. Talk about “a few months”…

That is correct Jep
And why have nameplates when the outlines already do everything nameplates do? See what I did there…
a false comparison?!
how do outlines do everything nameplates do?
care to elaborate how I get the players name out of the outline?
or in case of healthbars, care to explain how I know the health status of my enemies/friends through the halos/rim lightning?
you cant, cause both halos and rim lightning do not provide that information, at least not in their current incarnation.
the healthbars/nameplates provide additional info, the rimlightning/halos do not.
they dont do anything that isnt already covered by other (superior) HUD elements.
Because nameplates have been in place in other shooters for a while now without the majority having problems with it.
Do the majority of people have a problem with outlines? I’ve only heard a few people complaining about it. Namely you guys. Seems like a vocal minority to me.
Change is not inherently bad, dude. Final Fantasy wasn’t making “bad” RPGs, but Disgaea is cool too.

You don’t need to know there name, just if they are friend or foe. Since characters are customizable, the look of the character replaces the name - You will know who is who based off appearance which you can’t do in a lot of other FPS games.
or in case of healthbars, care to explain how I know the health status of my enemies/friends through the halos/rim lightning?
Again, health bars are not needed. Not all FPS games have them. In the case of Brink, there are healthbars, so no worries.
I don’t understand. Why do you want health bars? Is it to make the game more skillful? I always thought that part of the game was gambling on how much health your enemy had and whether or not it was worth try to fight them. Somebody please enlighten me.
Like quake pros? They have to know exactly how much damage each weapon puts out and the distance falloff for splash damage and then do the math and track mentally each players health. Maybe after 3000+ hours you might be able to do that, but I’m pretty sure most of the world has actual jobs and families. I still haven’t figure out how school students can play for 5+ hours a day and still pass…did school really become that easy? So since most of us want to have some helps added(and since, unlike real-life, you can take more than one bullet to the heart before you die) this health bar would be a welcome addition so we can focus on more important parts of learning like strategy.

Health bars on the enemy are just indicators. In some games you have to guess based on the weapon you used and the amount of times you hit them. eg UT99… In other games like Quake they make a sound when they are on low health.
There are other indicators like directional hit indicators. When you’re hit, you know roughly where its coming from. There are hitsounds and visual hit indicators, that tell you whether your shots are hitting the enemy or whether your shots are hitting a teammate.
This feedback is pretty standard these days.
What I don’t understand is why the developers thought we would need a glow for both teams. Wouldn’t it be more reasonable just to have a glow for your own team? Therefore, if you see player not glowing, shoot him cause he ain’t in your team. Simple.
there isn’t a glow for both teams, team mates only have an aura when you can interact with them, otherwise they have nothing
Ha. I should have known. It really is an obvious way to end an 18 page starting issue.
Get to it Splash Damage.
Oh and my bad trigg3r. I still think it’s an overall bad game design choice though.
I’m sorry for being a bit abrupt, but this became a touchy topic.
And 18 pages aren’t that many… but I can admit, it tends to go around in circle several times…

You’re missing the point.
I never said I need either nameplates nor healthbars.
but they’re there, effectively making rim lightning obsolete while providing additional information.
rim lightning doesnt tell me anything what a nameplate couldnt…
We dont need several different HUD elements that tell us the same god damn thing.
Why dont we add a WoW style hunters mark above enemy heads? because it’s useless, we get the same information out of a different HUD element already.
rim lightnings purpose is to tell us:
hey this guy is glowing red, he is an enemy, shoot him.
But the same thing could be done with just the nameplates or the healthbars that are already there:
Hey this guy has a red healthbar on top of his head, he is an enemy, shoot him.
and at the moment we have the following:
hey this guy is glowing red, has a red nameplate and a healthbar on top of his head and he is not blue like your teammates, shoot him…
it’s just too much…
and out of all these things, rim lightning affects the visuals the most and doesnt even provide additional info like the health status or names, it’s just there to tell you that there is an enemy, but healthbars could do the same job just fine while offering additional information like health status…
finally get it?
you dont have to agree, Im sure there are people that dotn have a problem with the glow, but I do, and I saw several people complaining about it in the comments for video previews.
The fact that this thread reached page 18 is already enough to prove that many more are concerned about it.
I already “own” that game, as I preordered it a long time ago through steam, and Im happy that I can turn it off.
the thing is, casuals and probably console players wont/cant turn it off or just dont know about it.
the last thing I want is people to dismiss this game because of that.
Gameplay IS the most important, but you can have gameplay AND good visuals, they’re not exclusive to each other.
I want this game to succeed and this is one small little thing that I dislike about the game.
but they add up.
I fell in love with the first container city gameplay footage.
they obviously had to add some HUD elements, but what we see now is just too much for me.
the game looks like crap compared to the container city gameplay.
they could have done a WAY better job.
I just hope I will be able to adjust the HUD the way I like.
it probably wont be on the level of World of warcraft, but still.

It’s alright no harm done.
Repeat tends to happen when someone like me is too lazy to go through 18 pages of arguing.
beute, please, stop being wrong :
How can you think that people being slightly more red for you to see them affect MORE the graphics than names or an healthbar flotting above their head ? Seriously ? They’ve just chosen, for the enemy to be seen, instead of making all the game really bright and people of each team being all red or all blue (with stupid hat on top), to have good graphisms with contrasted map, bright zones, dark ones, etc, and make the enemy looks a bit more red. That’s artificial, yeah, but that’s just a choice.
And the topic is long, not because a lot of people are concerned, but because some people are getting so much concerned that they don’t care saying the same things over and over again.
