Enemy Glowing

(Jess Alon) #361

Is it possible the rim lighting is catering to people who aren’t good at making a call about who’s on their team and who’s not? And even if they have a health bar that would be difficult for them to assess? But with the rim lighting and red color they know, “Oh ok this guy is definitely my enemy.” Let’s go into this game assuming it’s a game to suck people who don’t play a lot of shooters into the online shooter. Think of it from there. What’s logical? I can look at almost any outfit and tell what side they are on. Maybe not everyone has that kind of common sense and it could get frustrating for them.

And don’t say “That person shouldn’t be playing then.” Because Brink’s cornerstone is accessibility.
beute, please, stop being wrong :
If you reread my post you will notice that I use the words could/would when Im talking about nameplates/healthbars.
so no, Im not wrong.

Wow! An 18 page conversation!
and again, that is not a valid point.

Enemies already have red nameplates and a healthbar on top of their head.
that is enough visibility, no need to ruin the visuals by adding that damn glow.

I still dont see a single valid reason to keep the halos/rim lightning.
That was the part I had quoted, don’t see any could/would there.

And again :
You’re missing the point.

I never said I need either nameplates nor healthbars.
but they’re there, effectively making rim lightning obsolete while providing additional information.

[…]

and at the moment we have the following:
hey this guy is glowing red, has a red nameplate and a healthbar on top of his head and he is not blue like your teammates, shoot him…
AT THE MOMENT, from what we can see in the vids, we have enemy glowing red when they’re at middle to long range, and for me that is clearly less intrusive than a healthbar/nameplate that would be over their head all the time. Plus, when you’re aiming at someone (and/or shooting at him, not sure), his health (and class) is shown. That way you have the information you need only when you probably need it.

I don’t see the problem, and I don’t see the point on imagining how worse things could be…

Understand me, I don’t really want to convince you, as I see I really have little chance to achieve that…
I’d just like you to at least criticize ACTUAL infos we have.

I heard there also will be a wallhack and a “full_red” skin, you know, for the beginners… Because learning how to play is too hard nowaday, I just want to sit and enjoy! I think all the problems about the rim light, the one_button_nade, the smart etc just come from a different philosophy in gaming, some find their fun by trying again and again to master something (aiming / movement / teamplay) and some others find their fun by just sitting on their couch, start up the game and being “good” a t it from the start. The two options arent exactly the opposites, but I think that, even if SD are trying their best here to satisfy both parts, they simply cant.

Its time to move on a bit and take the game for what it is, an hybrid of casual / “expert” gameplay, if you dont like it, go either buy the sims or download QLive, respectively.

Peace

And that is just plain trolling.

(Seyu) #367

SD started it. :stroggbanana:

(LyndonL) #368

Troll maybe… Pretty fair though. Trying to make everyone happy DOES end up making a hybrid.

(Apples) #369

Care to elaborate? I dont see how trying to be “in the middle” and accepting it is plain trolling… If you cant bother other’s opinion I suggest you play SP and dont hang on forums, will be better for everyone

The game is an hybrid, many old schooler here dislike the “we want to help the noobs” features as they see them like this, as already said I dont really care as I never buy a game on the spot, I’ll have plenty of time to make my mind after friend’s impressions. I also dislike many features, starting by the choice of steam only, but I changed my mind as steam is really better than it was when I first used it, see, we can change our mind!

The fact that you dont see how this feature can turn off people is something, but ignoring some people’s concern is just plain stupid, as everyone have concerns about this game, and I think having concerns is a stronger evidence that we support the dev, rather than accepting everything like Fanboiz.

Peace

And (my guess) that for every game developer talking to the community openly there are 200 paid sock puppets.

Enemy recognition is clearly not an issue or they would just add teammate indicators rather than enemy indicators. Even Quake3 figured that out. Quake3 also had an option to force enemy models (which I didn’t like but could leave with it). So choosing tiny models to blend with shadows is also not a big issue for anyone smart enough to change default settings. Something tells me Splash Damage don’t have that much faith in our mental ability. Best to aim for the lowest common denominator.

The current situation is basically suits, big publishers etc overriding developers’ and designers decisions. They are de facto game designers.

I haven’t played (or heard of) a multiplayer game which tried to use light&shadow, stealth as a game mechanic. There was a… Thievery mod I believe. Because shadows are more demanding to calculate than fullbright, making them a game mechanic can sound like lost sales. I don’t know about you, but I would play a multiplayer game which has light-based stealth.

Right, I think we’ve covered everything there is to cover for the moment, and this thread has now taken on a rather circular path.

Thanks everyone for their input on this, it’s appreciated!
