Enemy Glowing

(Senethro) #321
It’s like calling 9/11 while seeing an accident happening (or someone receiving an involuntary rim job) happening right in front of you and then being ignored because you didn’t experience the incident first hand.

Look, SD may be confident they didn’t mess up. I am just as confident they messed it up for me. Not just the implementation but the motivations for this implementation tell me enough that this is no longer a game I should be interesting in.

And you’re right. I should keep my thoughts for myself next time. I think I’ve been fooling myself for a a few thousand too many posts now. We’re not the ones SD needs to cater to any more, we’re on their forum performing forensic art on each and every meagre bit of information and arguing over it like it matters.

I have no grounds to criticise their approach, they want a bigger audience by making the game more shallow. Fine. But through that they just placed me out of their target audience. Don’t mistake this for a complaint, see it as a concession.

Cheers.
Is this a LEAVING FOREVER post…?

and again, that is not a valid point.

Enemies already have red nameplates and a healthbar on top of their head.
that is enough visibility, no need to ruin the visuals by adding that damn glow.

I still dont see a single valid reason to keep the halos/rim lightning.

nameplates,“push X” already cover everything.
you dont need a blue halo and a “push X” message, you dont need nameplate and healthbars and rim lightning.

Atleast nameplates and healthbars give additional info like the health of your target or the name…(obvious isnt it?)
rim lightning/halo give us nothing that we dont already have.
but they take away clean visuals.

(Jess Alon) #323

I’d like to see splash damage comment on it in entirety.

(trigg3r) #324

is Horse a psychic or something? he quoted tokamak on something he said 20 minutes later

You’re right… There are already enough stuff to make us see friend from foe… It’s like we’re challenged people getting more and more things to make everything easier o_O Enemy health + rim lightning?

Anyways… Why wont Exo come back here and tell us what is what for consoles? :<

And why have nameplates when the outlines already do everything nameplates do? See what I did there…

As far as the outlines making the game look ugly, this is entirely subjective - stating it like a fact doesn’t make it one. I for one have no problem with the visual effect of the outlines.

(Jess Alon) #327

You know I think if you type a developers name on the forum they must get an email because I typed PW’s name earlier and saw him looking at the thread. And then my post disappeared.

(trigg3r) #328

i also heard that if you repeat their names 5 times while looking into a mirror they’ll appear right behind you with a hook

(Nail) #329

notice the edit time ?

(Jess Alon) #330

Oh jeebus. Even if you don’t live in Europe?

(trigg3r) #331

it was a Candyman reference -_-

Wasn’t planning on responding but I do want to make it clear where I’m coming from. SD still made two games I absolutely love. I will hang around on the forum but I’ll just keep this as my last post in this section.

Exedore said he got misrepresented a lot and I feel the same about my side. People can pretend this is just cosmetics. However, this was neither SD’s original reason nor was it the most important reason to oppose it. SD picked a direction I principally disagree with. They sacrifced a lot of the earlier premises they set out a few months before the release in order to appeal to the masses. I won’t let myself be pushed to a fringe group playing on adjusted settings on an obscure server. I can either stay here and be bitter about it or I can just refrain posting at all. People are free to call it childish, but then again, they would say the same (or already did) if I continued to argue here.

It was fun while it lasted. Game development fascinates me (more so than playing the game). But I realise I’ve also been horribly naive, like a child with a fake cell phone. It’s fun to stand on the sideline and pretend you’re being listened to until reality catches up with you.

Luckily I’ve got more places to vent the frustrated developer in me (and I’m proud to say; with results) and otherwise I still have my notepads I can keep scribbling in. If things turn out right then this summer I’ve got a project with a few like-minded fellows so I can finally have things my way.

So yeah. No more Brink for me, still best of luck and I hope it will become a huge phenomenon in the industry.

I uhhhh… huh. Good luck with that I guess.

My two comments are that you had unrealistic expectations of the ability to influence SD, hell making the thing toggleable was pretty cool. Its also a hell of a straw to break the camel’s back on. Not that I didn’t think every other straw along the way was ridiculously trivial even when I agreed with you.

EIther the game will work or it won’t and its not going to be largely on the rim lighting or one button grenades or whatever.

(tokamak) #334

Breaking my vow again (last time I promise :p). But yeah I agree with that, though I have to say: this is particular change goes much deeper than it appears on the surface. It’s not as trivial as it appears.

(Ajax's Spear) #335

Haha whatever. I would bet my bottom dollar that you will buy and play the hell out of the game.

(Mad Hatter) #336

(seeing if I can get him to break his vow again)

I’d say that all comes down to how much you let it affect you. I for one see this feature as being not detrimental at all to how I want the game to play, which is fast and frantic, like they’ve said it was going to be all along. My one and only concern with the auras was that I didn’t want them to inhibit my ability to see my enemy’s cool outfits and whatnot. Now that I know that the effect fades away the closer you get, I have absolutely no problem with them at all. Brink continues to meet, if not exceed, my expectations.

It’s all a matter of perspective.

(Cankor) #337

I’m speculating the lack of info on the consoles is because there is no toggle. At least not right now. maybe they will try and add one, but if you think about it it’s a lot harder to do this on a console without dedicated servers.

With a dedicated server you can see in yours erver browser which ones have it and which ones don’t, alongwith whatever map is playingand who’s in it and everything eslse, you click the server you want and join up. If there are none you want with you option you can see that and just say oh well and pick one with settings that are close to what you want.

With consoles you can’t do this. There’s probably going to be FF on/off options, so that will split people up, and theres already going to be splitting of people into 4 groups based on matchmaking levels. So this as an option would split them even further. At some point you have to limit the options they can give you so you can get good games with people close by.

Keep in mind I’m basing this on a global option, not a player option, i.e. it’s on or off for everyone because tt really doesn’t make sense for you to be able to turn it off just for yourself as you’re pretty much just handicapping yourself against everyone else. I suppose they could do that (per player toggle) easily enough but it’s not really a solution. Also, it makes more sense to me to have it there in consoles anyway because you are further from the screen and are playing at lower resolution, and maybe this is the part where they said even what is there now is too subtle for some people.

In addition, they are probably at the point (or past it) where they need to be turning in the final builds to MS and Sony for certification, so it may be too late to try and add it for consoles at this point. Maybe in a patch.

So I’m pretty sure you console guys won’t have the choice. If I were a console gamer I would try and keep an open mind and let SD’s track record keep me feeling optimistic until i got to play the game.

(trigg3r) #338

wow, you really ain’t getting the game just for one feature you don’t like? a feauture you can easily toggle it off?

(Jess Alon) #339

That’s just silly.
