Endless Levelling

(II 6R3ND3L II) #42

I love the team play aspects of Brink but the level cap, more importantly the ability cap, is killing me.
ok, i just realized that the cap was 20 yesterday when i hit it.

I play with a team on TG.
i created my character for support of that team.
now i realize i need to start from the beginning with another character?!?!?!
i dont have time, i just want to play with ONE character.
i like just a few visual characteristics and i can choose body types before a match.

i never care about levels or k/d ratios. i care about playing the game and playing constructively with other players. i would play this game for hundreds of hours straight to make sure i am able to be all of the classes with the same character. i have no interest in switching visual styles or faces. i play on a team, we get to know each other by the way we look and swap classes as needed in the game.

Sad :frowning: to know that i am stuck with one character with only 1.5 classes.
do hope that this changes somehow.

I personally think SD had it right with ETQW. At the start of the campaign everyone is equal regardless of how good you are or how long you have played. The whole persistent level/abilities thing is my least favorite aspect of the game.

(St NickelStew) #44

But this is one of the things I particularly like. And the opportunity to create several unique characters, with different sets of abilities. I like.

(StarkRavinMad) #45

They could have separated the abilities from the Barbie Dolls. Class and performance during a campaign to get you additional abilities; persistent xp for playing dress-up.

(Zelltre) #46

Sounds like you want them to add more levels for no reason like Ubisoft did to RSV2. After a while XP becomes a measure of time played anyways, so…Nein broham…Nein!

Shadowrun doesn’t even HAVE a level/ranking system, and that game was AMAZING. Sure you get XP, but it counts to NOTHING. You guys are getting picky about really small things now. If you play games for XP validation, you’re missing out on something I like to call gameplay.

(xdc) #47

i dont like the idea, they should make a level 20’s only server, and remove the whole XP system altogether(only on these servers). it would make players focus more on teamplay, objectives, and wining rather than just focusing on XP as wining the game doesn’t even reward you with noticeable extra XP

i’ll openly admit that from at first level 1 - 8 i was learning the map, objectives, etc around level 16 I didn’t care and just wanted to get level 20 so i could sell-all, get back to level 20, and set my abilities the way i want them

(InfiniteStates) #48

Wow, I never realised that this argument was quite so polarised. I just thought it would please the guys like me that like the sense of progression, whether it’s a placebo or not. And the one’s that weren’t bothered would be indifferent as it makes no difference to them.

Huge shout of appreciation to Coolaguy and his contributions to this thread. I’m someone who likes to know why all the time, and now I do with respect to why Brink feels flat at level 20. Very educational and useful information to me. Thanks.

I still don’t really understand the opposition to the endless levelling suggestion, although I now appreciate it’s there. Sure you can make new characters and/or play for the fun of it. But as Coolaguy says - the game grooms you into looking forward to levelling up, then abruptly removes that aspect.

But some are implying that the introduction of continuous XP is suddenly going to induce people to care about that over the game… However, it’s not like people will suddenly start boosting. If they were going to do it, they already would be. And the XP system is so well crafted that it’s most efficient to just get on and play the game anyway.

You can argue against this issue until your blue in the face, but it’s pointless as it’s a subjective matter of opinion, not fact. And as much as I and others of my opinion love Brink, we will drift away from it when we have extracted all the self-imposed progression targets from it we can. Which will diminish what is already a smaller than average community anyway over such a trivial and meaningless thing.

(SpawnTDK) #49

should be the main reason to level a “character” to help a team with your class as mutch as possible, and not the leveling itself?
this isn’t an mmo, even an mmo stops counting xp when you’ve reached the max level.

but for one thing i’m in:

count the xp up close to level 2, and if a player resets his abilitys, reduce only the xp down to the end of level 19, so getting 20 back is just a matter of minutes.

(warezcc) #50

t’s amazing. You’re making me feel inadequate.

(wolfnemesis75) #51

No. You have to pick and choose what clothes you will wear and what you will look like and can’t wear them all at the same time. In a similar way, you have to do the same with abilities. Makes perfect sense.

The level cap at this moment means that you can’t have all abilities as it would make you a godlike player. This is meant to keep the playing field level for players signing up to the game as they can radiply get the same benefits should they want to.

Oh, and if you weren’t aware of it, you can reset all abilities by clicking the Sell all button in the abilities screen to get all “credits” back (this does mean they’re all unchecked, so note down which ones you had before if you later notice you liked that extra mine or something!).

I mean, just run up to a command post and switch classes! (If you can’t find the command post, check the objective wheel. It actually has a “go to nearest Command Post” objective)
Sad :frowning: to know that i am stuck with one character with only 1.5 classes.
do hope that this changes somehow. :)
Once again, you can switch classes at any time within the game. If you want to have different abilities, reset them and spend your credits more wisely to match your playing style.

Hope this helps.

No - it doesn’t help. What was meant was that you can only be good at 1.5 classes (i.e. improved abilities). Obviously anyone can be any class at any time. But for most, that class will be vanilla if it is not the class strength for that character.

But this is not the discussion of this thread - as levelling beyond 20 doesn’t affect skill distribution in the slightest. There’s just a minor kink to iron out surrounding respecs.

(InfiniteStates) #54

OK, this “Endless Leveling” bollocks can be scratched if there’s gonna be a constant stream of DLC that pushes up the level cap.

NOW everything makes sense :penguin:

(kiunk) #55

Absolutely, having to disconnect from a good room to switch from a light character to a medium or heavy or vice versa is a bit broken in itself. IT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE AT THE PRE or POST GAME LOBBY MENU.

I just think if you’re playing on a level 20 server. All players should be well spec’d anyway. so i dont see the dissadvantage really of being able to switch between any of your 10 level20characters.

You can only play with 1 at a time after all.

(evaksrathi) #56

MY PROPOSAL:
Squad XP
when you reach max xp with a char the xp “overflows” into the “Squad XP” pool.
This will (A) show howmuch xp you have contributed to the resistance/security
and also (B) Effectively give you infinite xp you can watch climb
and last © Not affect level or rank dynamics

(Optional) Perhap make it so u can spend this squad xp on one of your char. Example: You’ve made 4 or 5 chars and you prefer light or heavy. You are forced to “unlock” it everychar you make. Make it so u can purchase “Special Training” to step into a heavy/light right away

would this be easy to program?

In the end, having those ability caps in place do keep the difference between a level 0 and a level 20 player smaller.

But indeed, we were talking about the XP cap.

(wolfnemesis75) #58

SD is raising the level cap to 24, so that will add some extra for players looking to do more with their character. If you create multiple characters, you’ll have a chance to try out all the new abilities in theory, even if not on the same character. Perhaps in the future there will be even higher levels to get to.

Are you ready to use these, brothers?

(kamikazee) #59

Actually, did they add if they would still give out ability credits when gaining a level?

As Coolaguy pointed out, there’s no harm in rewarding the player with new unlocks, more XP and other “kewl” stuff to give the player a sense of accomplishment. However, I’m a bit worried about the new set of abilities which could get unlocked: technically, they’re creating a larger divide between lvl 0 and lvl 24 players. Having some cap on it at least levels the ability field.
