Enabling Punkbuster Crashes ET...

(ConfusedRoflsaurus) #1

Hey guys, I have been having this weird problem ever since I installed Windows XP. Whenever I click the enable Punkbuster button in Enemy Territory, the game freezes and I get an infinite sound loop. So, I am reduced to playing on servers without Punkbuster, which are few and far between. Any tips?

Thanks!

Hiya there.

I have found this helps a lot os people with pb problems. Can be added to cfg or typed in at console.

pb_cl_enable
/pb_sleep 250
/pb_system 1
/pb_security 0

Ok… pb_cl_enable just enables your punkbuster client. PB_Sleep will tell your client when to ‘sleep’ and sets the inactive intervals which should reduce lag slightly. PB_System will intruct the pb client that the pb instruction (core) should be enabled… (don’t ask why this is seperate from the actuall punkbuster client interface) PB_Security, as explained in previous posts will by pass all the security warnings etc.

I have the same problem. I tried to implement the commands, but I can’t do it in the game console, cuz the game crashes after I write pb_cl_enable. I then tried writing this stuff in the etconfig.cfg, but nothing has changed. I suppose the commands are s bit different ther. Could you write the exact commands for config file?

i never had a problem with punkbuster initially. i grabbed et when it came out, and installed it onto my system (amd athlonxp 2000+ 256mb ddr 266 win xp) without issue. i had norton internet security installed. the only problem i ever had was having to disable the firewall to connect to the server list. however, today something must have happened i guess, because i was messing around with editing maps, and when i tried to start et to test things out, i got the blank screen load failure. i uninstalled et, gtkradiant, and rtcw (hah), reinstalled rtcw and et, and now i can RUN et, but if i enable punkbuster, sound loop crash. i installed it with antivirus disabled, firewall disabled, everything ic ould think of. i saw the post that said something about removing norton, but if you can’t have norton installed and still run punkbuster, why did it work before? it’s only today that it’s started to malfunction.
is there anything that i can do, or do i hve to go through some incredibly lame elaborate uninstall reinstall procedure?

Hi there.

Re the issues with the map testing, have you not left a “bad pk3” in your etmain directory? Maybe the map tou are busy on.
When you reinstalled did you delete the wolf et folder before reinstalling?

Regarding punkbuster, I found the most important step is the “/pb_system 1”. Just open console and type it as is without the quotes.

Go into your ET directory and right click the pb folder. If it’s set to Read-Only deselect that. That should take that attribute off all the files inside. But also check the subfolder in the pb directory and check that for the Read-Only attribute.

Same problem showed up for me last night. Read through the PB ET faq at evenbalance.com and they mentioned something that the Read-only attribute needs to be off.

I played fine earlier this morning. Now when I go to run ET it starts the fame engine and just goes to a grey screen and stops responding. So, I tried reinstalling the game. Now it runs, but if I try to enable punk buster it locks up an stops responding. WTF is going on? Anyone have any Ideas?

It is apparently a DNS issue. When I changed my DNS servers I had no problem running with punkbuster, no lockups nothing. The difference in the name server I was using and the one I switched to were the root servers that they were looking at. My original DNS server was looking at a.root-servers.net, and guess what…it is down and I couldn’t even ping it. So if you just started having problems today with PB and ET locking up at startup then the DNS server you are using is probably trying to resolve by a.root-server.net and since it is down it can’t contact the PB server.

Hey CC,
It was the same way for me to. Installed it the day it came out and had norton installed too. Played it that way till about a week or so ago (forget exactly when).
Think maybe NAV had a virus def update and whatever is in it ET doesnt like.
I can verify this by uninstalling and reinstall NAV and ET but not updating NAV. All runs fine. LiveUpdate to current Def’s, and boom, crashes.

I just went to grisoft.com and downloaded and installed the free AVG antivirus, works just as good and et doesnt crash :)))

does that software include a personal firewall? that’s the only reason i use norton (that and i have a registered copy of it thanks to a buddy). xp has some pretty enormous holes in it, or i wouldn’t have norton on here, just a simple antivirus app.
