[ELI5] High vs Medium vs Low Sensitivity. What's the way to go?

Mouse accel is just too inc
I find it the opposite though aye. It’s weird. I know on paper no accel is more logical and consistent, but man I struggle to use the same sens for all movements. I’ve just became so accustomed to slow = slow and fast = fast all determined by how I move my hand. Muscle memory is strong haha.

Coming from QL though certainly helped my aim in Dirty Bomb. The tracking weapons are pretty similar. I was most known for my LG on Quake Live. My profile average before it moved to steam was 47%, but towards the end of my Quake Live days I was consistently hitting 50+ in every game.

I’ve only played 33 hours of Quake Live since it moved to steam. I have no idea why. It just changed the game so much and I struggle to re-gain interest in it  but yeah, even after 33 hours using no accel (I turned it off in QL as well for the same reason as you) I just can’t hit the same. Movements feel jerky instead of fluid.
Mouse accel for QL was actually pretty helpful because you will find yourself needing to make quick long movements and if you don’t want to keep picking your mouse up all the time accel helps.

Low sens isn’t necessarily better but it is easier to develop muscle memory with a lower sensitivity since less precision is required to make accurate turns. I just use this site to make my sensitivity the same in all games.

30"/360 degree turn or 5.5@400 dpi in DB

(Xyfurion) #43

@pumpkinmeerkat If I did the calculations right, you need 76.2 cm to make a 360°? Fuck that’s a lot. Is your mousepad the size of your desk? Something doesn’t feel right. That’s half the size of a short human!

(pumpkinmeerkat) #44

@Xyfurion my mouse pad is around 18" x 16" (QCK Heavy) which is plenty for a 180 degree turn at my sensitivity. The same logic applies to anyone looking to try a lower sens - make the distance for a 180 degree turn one mouse width less than your mouse pad. That would represent the lowest possible since the sensor would be tracking edge to edge for a 180. It really comes down to personal preference though and practicing a lot with whatever sensitivity you find most intuitive to improve muscle memory. As a relatively new PC player myself the second part is still something I’m working on.

I recently bought a TKL keyboard so I didn’t hit the side of it when swiping from right to left or ran into it when I had to track going left further than normal.

(doxjq) #46

Same here, for the exact same reason too. It happened all too often in QL. Got a TKL back in 2012, never gamed with anything but since haha.

(pumpkinmeerkat) #47

I use a 60% keyboard for the same reason.

You have no idea how happy I feel to know that I am not the only person in the world to have done this! I replaced a perfectly good keyboard just so I could swipe my mouse one way slightly better. That made me feel a bit foolish. But the new keyboard is awesome so I don’t care too much

Personally, I’m playing with both high sensitivity and acceleration. Tried a steel series mouse to experiment if I was able to get rid of bad acceleration habits for 6 months, but I simply can’t. So I went back to my usual logitech mouse.

So yes, no matter what, you should stay in your comfort zone. I keep fiddling with in-game sens. Generally depending on how often I play : between periods where I can rarely play and ones I’ll spend 3 hours a day, there’s a factor 2 in the sensitivity I’ll chose. Back and forth all the time.

My hardcore session settings are probably the worst nightmare of half of the players here : I usually play with 800 dpi with sensitivity set around 20-25 and acceleration set to full in setpoint. A full rotation at fast speed requires around a centimeter or so.

60% keyboard ftw, best investment you’ll make

I did the same 3-4 years back when I had limited desk space. But then I moved and got more space, so I bought a bigger corner desk and I’m back to full size with no problems now. Gotta say I really missed the numpad. I have a Mionix Sargas 900 mouse pad next to (not partially under) my keyboard, plenty of space now, it’s nice.

Oh, I have plenty of desk space. My issue is that I had to move my keyboard so far away that it was a bit uncomfortable and harder to type on when I wanted to. I tried angling it but it made it a bit weird to play on and harder to type also. I mostly just dealt with it when the issue popped up.

I finally got annoyed enough to buy a new keyboard when I finally found a TKL that did everything I wanted it to do in regards to gaming and typing.

Yeah that’s true, guess I just got used to playing with my arms very spread out and an angled keyboard. But in the end I just could not live without my precious numpad

I used to play on 2000 DPI and 10 ingame sens for a long time, and it actually worked out pretty well. I’m a very seasoned FPS gamer and was able to acquire targets all around me in the blink of an eye.

Something changed, and for weeks on end I just couldn’t “git gud” anymore. Since then I dropped down to 1200 DPI / 5 ingame sensitivity and, though it took some getting used to, it actually works much better for me now.

Every now and again I try dropping it to 800 / 5, but I just feel like I’m missing out a lot on melee range like that.

(Amerika) #55

That’s kind of what I was talking about. Lowering your sensitivity simply lets you reduce the impact that your nerves have on you. Suddenly, instead of having a bad days and good days you just start having mostly good days as your nerves affect you less, your consistency in hitting goes up which also brings up your confidence. So you end up in a positive loop given enough time. But finding that sweet spot is something everyone has to figure out for themselves.

(Xyfurion) #56

@Amerika I can’t use a TKL keyboard for the life of me. I use a lot of the function keys regularly (assigned to Macros) while programming and for simple utility.

(Ritobasu) #57

I started Dirty Bomb with something like 1800 DPI and 20 in-game sens, now I’m at the same DPI but 16 in-game. ADS sens is at 90% of normal sens as well

I’ve been playing on high sensitivity in PC fpses for my entire life, I don’t see any reason to dramatically dial it down over a period of time. It’s all about keeping calm under pressure, and you’ll never have a problem overshooting a target

And do you grip your mouse entirely, or kinda ‘low-ride’ it with your palm on your desk when you’re in a firefight?

(RazielWarmonic) #59

Mice sensitivities are all about what is comfortable for you. You might have to change it several times before you hit that sweet spot. The best you can do to adjust is:

 1. Observe yourself.
 2. If you’re over shooting, lower your sensitivity.
 3. If you’re under shooting, raise it.
 4. Fine tune from there.
 5. ???
 6. Profit.

Knowing professional FPS players, their sensitivities, grips, mousepads, and mice all vary greatly. One of the better (if not the best) aimer I know plays with what I guess you’d call a “medium” sensitivity, and another one I consider pretty much on par with that person uses a “low” sensitivity.

I have a low sensitivity (41.61cm to 360), so I struggle in CQC, but at mid-long range I feel very comfortable.

All I know for sure is I wouldn’t keep switching it, it would make for wildly inaccurate data and inconsistencies.

You can convert most game’s sensitivities to others by either 1] knowing your cm to 360 or 2] using this website: http://www.mouse-sensitivity.com/

Hope this helps in figuring out what works for you.

Cheers!

I played with 60 Sensitivity previously and did pretty well. I have no idea what DPI my mouse is and stuff because it’s a just a generic HP one.

I changed to 15 Sensitivity and lowered my FOV so I could increase headshots while sniping. It helped a lot. However, I miss my 60 sensitivity for rushing with Aura and her shotgun :frowning:
