Echo Software

(iwound) #1

Thought i would start a thread about this amazing software, which analyzes the information gathered
by people playing. in da olden days we did this by eye. seems logical to use software.

heres some pics and the video if you havent seen it yet.

Dirty Bomb is powered by a great little tool we call Echo, and it’s a big part of why we’re able to give you access to Dirty Bomb this early in development. Developed by the talented chaps over at Fireteam, Echo basically collects and visualises detailed data from all of Dirty Bomb’s multiplayer servers, allowing us to balance and optimise the game in ways we couldn’t before.

Now if we could display this on the endgame screen… oh em gee.

(tokamak) #3

This is…arousing.

(Rex) #4

Amazing tool! Good work! That was what I expected.

(Violator) #5

Nice, will be great if these tools are released in the SDK.

As far as the video goes, just like with Brink and even ETQW, there’s a risk in using too high production values and making it look too smooth. Especially now really slick videos on unrealisable products on Kickstarters are ruining it for others. Simply a dude behind a pc or capturing his screen while showing off some Echo tools will look a lot more authentic.

JFTR: echo operates as a hosted web service and keeps all data “in the cloud ™”.

(tokamak) #8

Will it also track v-says and t-bags across the map?

(rookie1) #9

That show how serious SD is about making this game the best possible. Nice video, Nice technology ,Nice Marketing and …Nice Players
and yee! i was in the video youpi…been TK by Iwound :stuck_out_tongue: and kill by Smooth with a pistol :stuck_out_tongue:
Thanks !
With a nick like rookie1 what can i expect :stuck_out_tongue: someone have to do it
would had be nice to see who was the first person player nick somewhere .

(mitsuhiko) #10

Don’t give the designers any ideas.

(Anti) #11

At one point we genuinely had the concept kicking around for a t-bag based game mode in Brink, like a more insulting version of Kill Confirmed. Probably for the best that never happened

(Evil-Doer) #12

Awesome idea an concept.

Oh dear.

Well I can imagine that knowing when a player uses what V-say, with the functional ones relating to medics and ammo, can reveal more relevant info. Right now you see the deaths of players but you’re not differentiating the weight of each death. Not every death in the game is equally meaningful. However, once you see players starting to call for a medic or for ammo you can reasonably assume that they’re desperately wanting to stay alive at that point. Maybe not valuable after a few games, but once you start working with the average of thousands of games I think there’s a lot of use for v-say tracking.

A same thing you can do with multiplying the death of a player with the length of his life and colour-coding that. That way you filter out the careless lemmings that may skew the data from players that are genuinely careful. Both play-styles are valuable but from an analytic perspective you may want to separate them by adding different weights to the deaths.

And not just length, perhaps kills or xp earned that life could be used as weights. Would be fascinating if the different weights gave genuinely different patterns on the maps. Like high-skilled players dying in different places than lower-skilled players.

id love to see this available to some degree alongside other stats in the full game on release or a later date.
able to track individual players throughout a match etc.
also possibly something like in pic 3 as your limbo map showing the trace of the players, a little hard to see but each player has a red trail.
no its not a blood trail. showing their route as well as position.

if map editing were possible in the future im sure this could be available to use for us mere mortals.

oh and great video SD especially tying in echo as part of the process. im sure other companies use similar software but here its definitely a headline feature.

(Pytox) #15

Also don’t forget how much text lines everyone says
I guess I would be in the top 3 then
The echo stuff looks cool and all :), can you also track when medpacks are used and at what time in the match etc?

(tokamak) #16

“Some degree”!? I want everything!! Hell I’m going to spend more time in Echo than actually playing the game.

(SockDog) #17

Tracking vsays is great until you consider in game and external VoIP.

(Domipheus) #18

Indeed, also the loading screen for the average of all games on that map, headmaps etc. would be tasty!

(tokamak) #19

Or people who simply don’t use it at all. That’s why this dataset is going to need to be much bigger before it has significance, but once it does reach that point, oh boy.

(Scrupus) #20

Wow just watched the echo video, awesome stuff!! Really impressing, both the tools and the process - and any mapmakers wet dream, I would guess. Keep up the good work, this can only be great
