E3 2010 Coverage Round-up - Day 2: Brink Footage and More

(H0RSE) #101

lol, I thought console kids were whiners, but you guys take the cake.

“Brink sucks because it’s not 150% based on raw, unaltered skill, and when we mean skill, we mean accuracy and response time, because 90% of our examples are based around out shooting someone…” Well, at the very least, you guys are making me laugh. Good Job Soldier!

(Jamieson) #102

Its ok Horse you make me laugh to

Also digibob you should remain professional when a member of the public points out a flaw in your argument, there is no need for the attitude, afterall all community feedback is surely valid?

(digibob) #103

Now you’re just trolling

I have no problem with you disagreeing with anything I say, just stop trying to twist my words.

(Nihilist) #104

Personally I think comparing Brink to previous titles isn’t very useful…

Its pretty clear that Brink is a very different game than its predecessors, and not everyone will like it. Is it a crime to not follow the generic FPS shooter formula? Hmmm…

Coming from an ET background, I didn’t like ETQW when it came out (wtf vehicles???) but it grew on me - like a fungus. I’ll reserve judgment until the game is actually released and or more detailed gameplay is shown. What has been shown is brief and fairly inconclusive at best.

Change can be a good thing. Lets wait and see how the finished product is before jumping to conclusions by grabbing at fixed assumptions.

Could you overlook his trolling to answer my earlier question? I am curious if you guys have a plan or explanation for why we wouldn’t need to worry about the customizations interfering with player choices. Thanks…

(digibob) #106

People will play the way they want to play, we can’t really stop that. All we can do is provide incentives to make people want to change, for example by giving them bonuses for switching to the right class, and/or getting the objective done.

We experimented with that a little in ET:QW with the bonus for switching with unbalanced teams, though I think in the end we didn’t go far enough with it.

Obviously this needs to be balanced against people trying to abuse the system.

A question that comes out of this though, is what kind of thing is the player looking to get out of the game at that point? Are they looking for more XP to further their character progression? Are they just looking to have fun? Do they want to win to show off their stats? Depending on the answers to these questions, the player may wish to just change on their own accord, they may happily take the bonus, or they might just not care about the objective being completed at all.

(AnthonyDa) #107

XP earned can be used in many thing else than giving perks/hack to players (ex: customization on how you are looking like).

It looks like you are trying to tell us that the perk system is great. Yet, I remember rahdo saying that you were doing this to have more sales, despite you dislike it, just stay honest.
IF we can’t swap bodytype/perk midgame or at least between 2 rounds without having to disconnect/reconnect AND that it can completely unbalance the team, then it will be crap.
Plus being killed by a guy just because he has the X upgrades and you have the Y one, or you don’t have any because you just started to play the game is only frustrating, nothing else.

Now keep giving infractions/banning people who dislikes what they see from official content (videos) and trying to figure out if they miss understood things because it sounds like an incredibly stupid idea or they just want to share they idea/bad feeling about what they just saw, it’s a really good idea !

Well in any situation I am sure that people will play they want sure. For those of us who want to play to help the team win though, I just don’t want to feel pressured to load in as an all-around-character and when I am set for specializations I don’t want to swap classes and then feel worthless. Abilities like radar, 3rd cam, etc don’t bother me as they are available to everyone, while something like revive or class specific ones do. Perks available to all classes makes sense in the way of something like a mastery tree. You have the same opportunity as everyone else to set your tree in a way that will benefit you in certain situations like your saying, but throw different classes in there and you might come to a point where someone needs to switch classes and suddenly all their abilities are useless. Let’s hear some more details about the ability system .

Side note: I keep hearing the ability stuff compared to mmo rpgs, but if you have ever played an mmo/rpg, you know that you need a balanced group in order to be effective. Putting power into abilities is why there is such a thing as party selection so that you can make sure you get a solid group going. I really don’t want to be inclined to play only with my friends and work out who is playing as what before hand.

(badman) #109

Anthony, we welcome criticism so long as it’s constructive and doesn’t insult the company or the people working on the game (or moderating these boards, for that matter).

Each class has its own ability load-out.

OMG thank you. Okay so yea I was basically looking for that answer this whole time lmao. That is exactly what I wanted to see :):):)!

(Zhou Yu) #111

Okiedoke, thanks for the reply badman. Just to clarify though, the class perks depend on the class being used? So one character can have multiple class perks without somehow being penalised?

Just as an example to check if I’m getting it correctly:

Character Bob is playing brink as a soldier. He has placed 6 points in soldiering. Bob goes to the command post and changes to medic. Do these 6 points now transfer to the medic “tree” as he has set it up? Or does he need to spend more points in medic in order to have 6 points in his medic tree?

(MILFandCookies) #112

Dont know whether this has been asked before:

In the gameplay video, Paul joins the game and theres 6:05 on the clock.
Once Paul successfully completed the objective, the clock changes to 14:32

Was that an edited video from multiple games, or does each objective have its own time limit?

You set up each class how you wish, and you will switch abilities when you change class.

You obviously need to have bought all those abilities though!

(Qhullu) #114

well, there is a sort of limit to how good someones aim can be, it isn’t exactly the same to everyone but it is close enough so that depending on whether their aim is on or not at the moment, between two people fighting in a purely aim based game (not that such a thing exists), either one of them can win.

if a game is so heavy on the importance of skills outside aim that someone who needs to focus on their aim can consistently beat someone who has reached the plateau where aiming is effortless because they used skills outside aiming better, there is a problem. not with the fact that the person with the worse aim won, but with what it implies about fights between two people who have the same level of aim. and the problem is that the outcome of a fight between them is predetermined, (barring a miracle) always. which makes the game pointless to play between people with similar levels of aim.

the only exception to this is skill in movement.

so to sum that up, if you want to make a game with legs (=a game that most people don’t get tired of once they reach a certain skill level), you need to be very wary with how much importance you give to skills outside aim and movement (movement includes positioning, abusing angles, etc as well as dodging of course, everything movement related)

ps.
you banned Jamieson?
i doth protest!

But on a character with the maximum level you can’t have all abilities, right?

(H0RSE) #116
But on a character with the maximum level you can’t have all abilities, right?
I know they said it is impossible to unlock “everything” with one guy, but I think you could possibly unlock all in one category. But even if you had them all, you couldn’t use them all. You can only take like 5 abilities into a match per class…At least this is how I interpreted it.

(Ragoo) #117

Yeah, that’s what I thought too and what my concerns where based on

I am also curious if it will be possible to unlock absolutely everything at max level? I hope that it will be, but am also wondering how long it might take to achieve such a thing.

(LyndonL) #119

I still don’t see why everyone is so concerned at these perks?

I’ve read SO MANY people bragggging about being clan members and competing at the (self proclaimed) pro levels… if you really are as hardcore-awesome as you say you are, surely coming up against some “noob” with lots of perks that you don’t have won’t make you scared…

Someone was whinging before about being warned when someone has you in their sights… Are you that desperate to argue that you’re using that as an excuse? Show of hands all who target someone in their sights and then wait before you shoot???

(Joe999) #120

i doubt that. eg though in et it was fun for yourself playing a red syringed medic with a flak jacket in shrub mode, it wasn’t fun for the other players
