Dueling and the overall combat feeling?

(Vengeance) #1

I was curious to how the upcoming Enemy Territory: QuakeWars will feel when actually fighting in 1 vs 1 duels or overall infantry combat, the thing i loved most about RTCW and ET was how intense and smooth the battles actually felt.

I know there will be a much more varied styles of combat due to the new weaponry and of course the vehicles, but i have always liked been on foot with my little gun and my little needle, ready to heal my hole filled buddies

Anyone know if QuakeWars will offer a similar type combat experience that i and im sure a lot of others have come to love?

waves to anyone who might remember him from long long long ago :stuck_out_tongue:

(Nail) #2

I remember you and your bro from GB&G, afaik, the foot soldier aspect is still there in force

(einer) #3

Power on, for the none vehicle mode  !

(sddo) #4

i doubt they’ll go that far. they’ve already made sure that you have to be on foot to perform any of the major objectives and have a lot of indoor environments so there won’t be vehicle whores by design. no reason for an infantry only mode, but i guess we’ll see.

(Bongoboy) #5

By now I’m probably not the best judge, but ETQW should feel pretty similar to Wolf:ET in terms of pace and movement and manoeuvrability, just with lots more stuff.

The vehicles are an important part of the game, and it would be misleading to suggest they’re somehow optional or marginal, but the primary focus absolutely is on infantry combat and as has been pointed out earlier, all the objectives have to be completed on foot.

There’s certainly no shortage of 1 v. 1 duelling, which I invariably lose. This is clearly a bug, and will be dealt with before release, possibly by inclusion of the CVAR ā€œg_giveBongo Skillzā€

(GlobalWar) #6

Hmm i think you should also add the CVAR g_remove_skillz_from_everyone_except_from_bongo because otherwise you may still loose

(Flesh) #7
Well thats reassuring. If you can create the same 1 on 1 combat feeling you had in old Wolfy, than Quakewars is sure to be a hit. Vehicles or no vehicles, with or without asymetric teams its gonna be played by every ET veteran and a ton of new players.

Imo every fps basicly boils down to how entertaining 1 on 1 fights are. If you have that core gameplay aspect workedout everything else will fall into place.

(AKA Sneaky) #9

The feeling doesn’t have to be exacly the same, although there was a good one with rtcw and W:et, I still think there is more room for new stuff or remove annoying features such as heabobbing when u get shot or maybe reduce it with higher physical skill levels (Which i thought it was doing awhile ago, but not anymore? Or maybe it was a aimbot consanty spamming my head).

(Vengeance) #10

thanks for all the replies, sounds really cool actually. I dont mind the vehicles and im sure they will add an extra dimension to the game, i was just worried they were gonna take over everything.

Other games with vehicles have tainted my faith, forgive meeeee i shall go and repent my sins in the most evilest of fashions, spends the day getting kicked as a SMG Soldier the horror cries

Hey Salteh, beeen a long time and hey Nail. Thanks Mr BongoBoy for always putting me straight on stuff

What do you think about the idea, that if a vehicle is broken, it wont come back, you get next vehicles only when you pass object 1.
Then on/before object 2 you get an fixed amount of vehicles and must manage them right, because till you pass to object 3 you won’t get your tank, anansi or quadbike once again back if u massed it up.
So you have to time your vehicle attack and protect it, it would add an interesting gameplay element?

And not the publicplay thinking (ok i don’t care about publik that mutch, but still…) ā€œOh, i destroyed/they destroyed my quadbike. OK no problem i get the respawning/new one in my base.ā€. ā€œOh i destroyed it once again, lets get it once again from the baseā€.

Don’t know how the vehicles are implemented in the game (didn’t play it :)). But some people do, in some games, exactly what i sad above.

(kamikazee) #15

So how long before we see shops appear in the middle of the level where engineers sell spare parts?

(Vengeance) #16

Nominates Englander to get the boot for being suuuch a bully

hey Sauron  yeah i used to play NW for awhile and had lots of fun there

Since the teams are asymmetric, it may be hard to have 1 on 1 duels that have much meaning, unless they include a human vs. human and strogg vs. strogg dueling modes (don’t hold your breath).

The game is designed to be asymetric but still balanced, but I imagine that there will be enough differences between each side to make the value of straight up duels somewhat dubious. Nevertheless, in game show-downs will no doubt develop as 1 on 1 infantry battles are very common in Wolf:ET, I’d expect more of the same, especially during the ā€œon-footā€ phases of each map.

Unlike Wolf:ET, the human and stroggs are not just mirror images of each other in a different uniform. Each team is fundamentally different, although they may have cognate battlefield roles.

(Vengeance) #18

i can see where your coming from and i dont mind that so much, since in theory i should be with the team to try keep them up and running anyway, but on the rare occasions where i may endup alone i would enjoy feeling like i have a chance even if just a little tiny one. i just hope i dont run round a corner and think oh im dead whatever i do, might just get a little frustrating.

i dont mind dieing, i always die a lot anyway lol, but i always felt i died to the other players skilful playing well majority of the time, rather than oh i died due to their class.

i know im not very clear, but i hope you guys can decipher what i mean

(phray) #19

i think i know what you mean, and i’d just like to say don’t worry.

i know it’s been a while and lots may have changed since then; but i got to play it at quakecon last year, and it felt VERY similar to W:ET. you did get a feeling for the classes and their differences between the strogg and gdf and also between the classes. but it wasn’t so pronounced that the game isn’t fun.

for instance in w:et when you come upon someone with a flamethrower, you know to NOT get close to them and try fight them from a distance. a good flamer knows to only fight where he can trap his enemy in a close quarters battle. every class has it’s strengths and weaknesses and you just learn how to use those to your advantage…

i played both sides, and i got killed a LOT but i didn’t feel like it was because they a ā€˜superior class’ or that one side was simply better than the other.

hope that helps  :stroggbanana:  :stroggbanana:
