Downed Fire
Downed fire is indeed a part of brink and it shouldnt be removed. It opens the scope on new game mechanics and these tiny things make it so enjoyable - at least for me…

So I dont like it to see removed but I have an idea how this never ending story around downed fire could be solved:

Make all Universal Abilities customiseable through the server config. So every server admin can decide which universal ability can be used on his server and which not and by that it would allow a greater variety of servers, like very public arcade servers within to hardcore servers where nearly no univesal ability is allowed.
You can already do that…at least on the pc. I had a server running a while back that only used the esl approved abilities, along with some other customizations. That was all done with server configs.

I’m really surprised by all the people who say downed fire isn’t cheap, and that any decent player can avoid getting killed by it. I couldn’t disagree more. Maybe it is a console vs. pc thing. Often, at least when I play, I’m not always facing a 1v1. Even if you’re facing just two people, by the time you kill the second, you may not have time to find cover from the first guy and not enough bullets to gib without reloading.

I’m pc by the way. lol. I always forget not everyone here plays on pc.

Class indicators =/= ability indicators and yes, as I said in my last post, I agree that this is in line with other mechanics in Brink.

and it wouldn’t alter quoted text in another user’s post.

I understood what it was about. It’s still an ad hominem attack and his points are still just as valid to the discussion.
Also: the quoted text in your reply doesn’t change if he edits his comment so I’m not too sure what you’re trying to reference there.

Sounds good, if there was a lot of servers to choose from. Atm there usually is 1 or 2 servers for me to choose from where I have a chance of getting a ping<100. If you add in stuff like that it will either be more filter and less servers that you like or confusion around the rules for the server you got on.

I dont think either of those are good alternatives.

Making it possible to ban certain skills serverside would be good if there was enough servers to choose from. Atm there arent, at least not in europe if you’re looking for ping<150.

I like Zen’s idea of making it an Op skill - on the surface anyway, because I haven’t thought it through fully  heh

I don’t think it should be available for all classes as it is now - if you’re down, you should be down. It has nothing to do with how skilled any of the players are, or how quickly they’re making decisions - I just don’t think people should be able to do anything while they’re down. This also extends to the Medic self-revive - I played Medic pretty much exclusively in ET:QW and my brief stint with Brink, and obviously used the ability in Brink because it was available - but I don’t really agree with it  IMO it’s enough that you’re able to get a revive from another player, if you haven’t been gibbed. It worked well in ET:QW, and I don’t really see what improvements were made by changing it. That applies to many things, but I’m not going there (again)

Thing about anything along these lines is that some people just don’t like been killed cheaply, sometimes as pointed out getting killed by downed fire maybe down to lack of concentration but sometimes it’s unavoidable due to other factors like multiple enemy presence, lack of backup, low ammo after fire fight or whatever.

I’ve also been killed by people who were down that I didn’t kill after a fire fight else where then having the bad luck of running into a downed enemy whilst low on health. Factor in the fact that it’s quite hard at times to spot different between teams and it can get very frustrating not knowing if that guy on the floor in the corner of your eye is friend or foe and whether he can shoot.

If anything like this happens at crucial moments during a map and the round is lost as a result you’re going to get angry.

It’s on par with blue shells in Mario Kart

I personally think people should man up and learn to gib.

I use to play F.E.A.R. and there was an issue where when a player died you could drop you nade and say five times out of ten you would kill some as they ran over your body (I’d like to point out this was a bug and not a feature). There wasn’t any sense of gibing in fear, you just had to hold back for a second or two.

I don’t see downed-fire being any different in Brink, I’d possibly put the Cortex bomb in the same category.

Just gib people when they die, and move on to the next frag. They aren’t dead till they’ve been gibed, so it’s irrelevant if you go kill another guy as well and then die because a medic could come by and revive both of them.

Need ammo to do that though.

(matsy) #51

I still only use the Carb-9 with the Drum Magazine, if you can’t manage to kill and gib with that combo there is something wrong with you.

(.Chris.) #52

If you’re more than 1.23 metres away from the enemy you’re going to need the whole of that drum. Though admittedly this was before the weapon updates, I’m not sure how things are now.

(matsy) #53

Admittedly it does take more bullets than I’d prefer to gib someone and it seems the hit-detection is a bit off.

Side note, busy day at work?
