Douglas Adams and a bit of Monty Python?

(senator) #1

In case you haven’t read the Splash Damage Team Profile yet, I recommend it, good read

I’m only wondering who wrote it and who influenced the one who wrote it. I’m guessing 80% Douglas Adams and about 20% of Monty Python madness added. In case I guessed wrong, please reveal your secret mentor, as he’ll probably be a good read

(Damn, I almost wish SD would hire some new guys, even if only because it would force them to update their team profile  )

I write 'em; glad you like 'em.

I rather tried and clearly failed to avoid the Adams/Python stylee which casts a long and baleful shadow. Full list of influences will ship with the game, instead of the manual, but placeholder Props and Shouts to the masters: P.G. Wodehouse, H.L. Mencken, S.J.Perelman, Evelyn Waugh,Beachcomber, Flann O’Brien, Sir Terence of Milligan, Clive James, Woody Allen, Eric Sykes, Danny Baker, Chris Morris et al.

More team bios forthcoming soon btw.

Great, thank you Bongoboy, off to amazon to shop for some new books

Many unknown authors there, I only hope my school english will be good enough, but hey, there is no better way to learn a foreign language than by reading books

Oh, and I know how hard is is to come up with such an innovative style, even if you have some role models to copy. I once played a SciFi exploration and conquest game, and roleplayed the Vogons from the Hitchhikers Guide. Well, I simply had to torture my opponents with vogonic poetry every now and than, that was actually hard (but fun) work to create those ‘poems’

Therefore, hats off to you, I think it’s indeed very well written, and certainly a lot more entertaining to read than the usual credits/team page

Oh, that page!

Read it at least three-four times for as long I’m wandering on these forums, oh-so amusing page.

I especially recommend anything by ‘Sir Terence of Milligan’ aka Spike Milligan, the funniest man who ever lived…If you are thinking of buying a book, get ‘Adolf Hitler - My Part In His Downfall’ which is largely funny yet has the taint of death that initially sent the man mad which in turn made him so funny.

Once, at a comedy awards ceremony, Prince Charles gave a sort of praising speech about Spike. When Spike heard the good things Prince Charles was saying, he got up on the podium and said simply ‘Grovelling bastard’…only he could say something so outrageous and still make it funny…

You’re not Mr Milligan…are you?

(Etnies) #7

It was the irish blood in him that made him good :>

LOL. good read

Nice reading http://www.jolt.co.uk/index.php?articleid=4246

Favourite game?
Quake – I played it obsessively for years, and have memories of defending the 2Forts ramp-room that I find hard to distinguish from reality.

Sounds like a coolt match! GG!

Edit: Found the “2Forts ramp-room”

http://www.firingsquad.com/games/tfcp2/page2.asp

Edit 2: Never mind. I looked to quick. Its a HL1 map with the same name and same room name. Or is that map ported to HL1?

(Salteh) #10

Yeah, TFC is basically a port of QWTF to HL.
TFC also shipped with HL as far as I know, and lots of people seem to think TFC is the ‘true, first’ Team Fortress game :nag:

Nothing like a bit of the ole Python and the latter, to wash away the glooms. I consider Father Ted to be a future partner for the classics archive.

(Snipeydope) #12

Since the actor of Father Ted died (im ashamed to have forgotten his name) Father Ted (the programme) became classic.

I just found this: Spike ‘wrote world’s best joke’

Oh, and I found some of the old Goon Shows, no wonder I’ve never heared of them before, those were made 25 years before I was born (but they are good nevertheless) :moo:

(Bravo) #14

Spike could say anything and you would laugh yourself silly…

It was the way he said things
