There was a leaked alpha copy floating around a while back. It was pretty buggy and very choppy but did manage to show off some of the impressive graphics. Not sure if it can still be found.

(TABASCO) #7

hmm…i may have to check this out…

(skinner) #8

try uh, a certain file sharing application begining with k, which i will not mention the name of because i willg et my ass kicked, it begins with k and rhymes with bazaar

(Bongoboy) #9

Hmmm Skinner…what CAN you mean?..
There’s a reason that id don’t want that code on general release. Probably best not to piss 'em off, or they’ll take Doom 3 away and never let anyone else play it.
I know you probably won’t believe me, but here goes: don’t bother trying to download this or any other illegal, leaked, buggy code. It won’t work, it’ll crash your machine and there’s a chance it may have a tasty viral garnish. If you download an .exe from a file-sharing application…well, feel free to become a poster boy for Norton or Macaffee.

If you want a taste of the graphics, download the trailer. That’s what it’s for. And that’s what the game looks like.

Patience is a virtue. Piracy probably isn’t, I’m not sure, but I can go check…

:moo:

The leaked alpha sucks anyway, you’ll get 4fps on average if you’re lucky, and it contains only a couple of very small hallways. And it’s almost a year old…

(Not that I download illegal stuff, I ā€œsaw it at a friend’s pcā€ :fiesta: )

(skinner) #11

heh i didn’t actually download it (isn’t even a chance in hell of my computer loading the main menu) my computer is a bit slowww

(skinner) #12

oh sure, you saw it in a friends pc, we believe you wink wink

I’ve downloaded loads of exe’s from eMule, all of them have worked and I’ve havent had one virus. That program that begins with K is a different matter though. Never trust anything you download from there.

From what I’ve heard about this ā€œleaked alphaā€, it does work, but is buggy, and obviously not the complete game. The system requirements are also supposed to be insanely high to get it to run at any sort of playable speed. I’ve not tried it myself so I can’t say whether this is true or not.

(senator) #14

it’s a leaked Alpha so it’s probably compiled in debug-mode, that explains the high system requirements. Anything below a HAL 9000 is probably unable to run it smoothly, an Athlon 1GHz + GeForce2 will probably run at the bretahtaking speed of 0.5 FPS (if there’s noting going on) so save your bandwidth, download some nice screenshots (or the trailer!), they’ll give you twice the pleasure

I suggest Trend PC-Cillin. It scans any file that gets created, copied or renamed on your PC for viruses and has an auto updater (which I leave on daily). I’ve never had a virus from Kazaa, but I have blocked many.

And Kazaa are trying to improve things with that bullguard software - just a shame that bullguard is almost as crappy as Norton. Almost.

As for the leaked alpha, I too saw it on a ā€œfriendsā€ machine. Fortunately my friend has a stupidly powerful system and so we were able to get around 15fps in some areas (although only 3-6 when enemies are around).

I know it’s only a leaked non demo level testing peice of stolen code, but what was there was really dull. Sure it looked pretty, but the opoonents were really crappy. That big beast you see eating the guy in the toilet - he’s boring. He moves quite slowly and doesn’t really pose much of a threat. The zombies are little more than corridor blockers. I hope they have done something to improve those enemies before the final release.

(DeAtHmAsTeR) #16

wot the fuck are you talking about? they both use the gnutella network

(sniser) #17

Heh. Neither of them use gnutella - eMule uses the eDonkey network, Kazaa uses the FastTrack network.

By the way, it’s stupid to download anything off Kazaa… since it doesn’t hash the whole file it doesn’t always detect corrupted downloads - whereas a more intelligent p2p app would simply re-download the corrupt part.

Whatever you do, don’t use Kazaa for it.

(Wraith2k3) #18

gnutella? Who told you that?

Damocles, I have never had a virus from Kazaa (well, Kazaa lite), but I’ve blacked many too.

I don’t use Kazaa that often though anyway, cos its utter shite for pretty much everything. The only thing I use it for is music at the moment.

(Emon) #19

The Doom III alpha is like two years old, extremely buggy, slow, unstable, and leaves some gigantic holes in your RAM. Honestly, I tested out the alpha, and deleted it in like two days because I couldn’t stand it. I’d much rather play the real game, and I’d much rather wait.

it says that

Most P2P sharing programs use the gnutella network

but P2P sharing programs differ in which sort of material they prefer to show first and dominantly
