DooM3 MP pics

(LaVaGoD) #1

I just saw the pics on the Doom3 MP and I am in love already. I want to ask Arnout (RR2D02) about the shot. It reminds me of the Factory level he did for Q3F to show off the partical effects. I was wondering if this level had anything to do with that Q3F level. Arnout please let me know bud

Looks like the good old GF4 Ti4600 128MB is goin’ into the downstairs machine, sigh.

(BondyBoy007) #3

Looks like my motherboard, processor and graphics card (GF3 Ti200 lol)are going to be making the trip downstairs too if I want to play this game.

The missus is not going to be very happy

There’s nothing in that pic that a GF4ti4600 couldn;t handle in it’s sleep. Everyone is acting like D3 will need a minimum of a GF FX5 super ass-whupping graphics mosnter (pro version, update 6). It’s going to run reasonably on a high end GF3. ID would be mad to make a game that only runs well on the latest hardware.

([=O=]SMYLER) #5

Damocles ANYONE who says that even that screenshot when animated will run happily on (at that resolution and amount of effects and textures enabled) anything less than the biggest, baddest, number crunchin’ whore of a video card, with the biggest most ignorant amount of memory speed is possibly the most fuckin’ stupid fuck this side of idiotsville.

Yes it may well “run” on lesser video cards but it will NEVER look like it was meant to be played. Even that screenshot is enough for ANYONE to get the big bitch Nvidias and ATis. FOR FUCKS SAKE WE ALL COMPLAIN ABOUT FPS IN ET WHAT THE FUCK IS GONNA HAPPEN IN DOOM 3 !!

I hasten to add that any reply to the contrary from anyone will only result in the them displaying their complete ignorance of all things sane and possibly it will highlight their abnormal affections for farmyard animals  .

If they are running in 640x480 with a GeForce FX, you better start saving up for a new card. GF3?! Doubt it.

(senator) #7

They showed the multiplayer demo of Doom3 at the QuakeCon, it ran on a 2GHz Athlon 64 (using a prototype nvidia bord), a GeForce FX5900 Ultra and 512MB PC3200 RAM.

This system was barely enough to run the game smoothly at 640x480 with everything set to high detail!

(damocles) #8

The game is also a year away from completion. By the time it comes out, it will be optimised beyond belief.

A GF3 won’t be able to play with much detail, but a GF4Ti4600 will be able to handle all but the most advanced aspects of the engine. I certainly won’t be trading my GF4Ti4200 for it. And I think I’ll get good framerates just not the HLSL/DX9 effects. I think I’ll live.

But hey, if you have money burning holes in your pockets, why wait? Why not trade in your whole system now? And then again when D3 is released!

(KamiKid) #9

I seriously doubt any optimizations will greatly enhance anything. In a years time better video cards and faster processors will make more of a difference than any optimizations. People are always saying “well it’s not optimized” What the hell do you think? That some zone portals and some editor hacks are gonna give you 50+ frames? ridiculous.

(damocles) #10

Not 50, but enough. You’d be amazed at just how much of a difference a lot of ENGINE optimisations can make, especially when done by such a prolific engine coder as John Carmack.

([=O=]SMYLER) #11

Both of you two have valid points and they are most definitley correct, the only thing I would say is, we’ve all noticed that programmers are inherintly lazy, so why trouble yourself to be clever about things and make older hardware work reasonably well whenever you can be a lazy bastard and expect everybody to upgrade thier computers (which they do, me included) and the game will still sell.

This is me and  everybody else spending lots of money on upgrades so we can play Doom 3.

(damocles) #12

so why trouble yourself to be clever about things and make older hardware work reasonably well whenever you can be a lazy bastard and expect everybody to upgrade thier computers

Because publishers don’t like it when you turn round and give them a game that won’t run on 70% of the computers of their target markets.

It’s all about the figures. If ID make a game that can only be played by a small percentage of people, then Activision lose money and ID get a and rep. If Activision pull the plug, then ID lose money until they can find a replacement. It’s always about the money in the games industry and no company, not even the well established and stupidly famous ID can afford to make games that are only playable by a small percentage of people.

(Cosmos) #13

Ah looks like my GeForce 2 Ti won’t handle this game unless I put the resolution to something crappy like 320x240. I can’t afford a mega super GFX card just yet and I don’t see why I should buy one if they keep changing too much. £300 for the best card over here I think that price is way too high. It makes me wonder how much profit they get on each card.

(damocles) #14

Then don’t get the best card. And D3 won’t be out for a year anyway, so if you start saving now

(Cosmos) #15

HEHE. I will save and will get the best card but it won’t be the best for long. :banghead:

If id would bring a fart in a box on the market, i would buy it : So will alot of other people.

I wonder what the fart-in-a-box game would be called though…

Fart IV Arena ?

(Salteh) #17

Dear Soupeh, we miss you :o

(damocles) #18

Can I interest you in this lovely line of deoderant - it’s called Eau de ID excretions. It’s all the rage. Endoresed by John Carmack himself. Only $200 a bottle.

(LaVaGoD) #19

Wow I had no idea this thread would turn out like this.

Arnout still please reply with an answer old friend.

(Rippin Kitten) #20

If anything Doom3 will be very scalable. This will probably become the “next generation” game engine from id, and since they make a decent living off licencing the game engine to other developers, they’ll certainly make the game playable on “mid-range” systems as well as add features that could only be supported by next-generation hardware.
