Please note that AFAIK (and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong), SD is working on the MAPPING portion of D3… Hence they would not be involved in porting the game to Linux.
That would be a question to ask ID/Activision.
Based on past experience, it seems to me that a linux port of D3 is quite likely.
ID has been making a Linux port of their games since Quake III , if you remember a while back they released a Linux special edition Quake III in a tin can
Even before that… I remember Quake I or II being on Linux, but I’m not sure if it was third party or not, e.g. Loki.
You can play Wolfenstein 3D, Doom I and Doom II on Linux, although these ports were not made by ID. Some nice people took the source code of those games (which is released by ID) and ported them to many many OSs.
Ever played Doom I with a mouse Quake-style (mouse look). It’s really really fun. If you look at objects from above (like weapons, ammo and enemies), they are flat, 'cause at that times all objects were sprites !

I believe quake2 was the first linux port done by id, although the Linux version was never released in a retail manner like quake3.
The original q2 release for linux had some issues. Namely, you couldn’t play with hardware GL unless you had a 3dfx card. This was later worked around with a 3rd party tool called q2hack that allowed you to use GLX rendering, Not to take anything away from id since GLX didn’t even exist in XFree86 when they released q2 for Linux! ( It just shows id’s ability to do pioneering work. Of couse now that q2 has been released GPL, icculus.org has been updating the binary so it now supports native GLX.
end of id fanboy rant
Hi,
my first Slackware (August 1995) had Doom in it. It probably was an unofficial port, but it was certainly made by id.
And at the time of their release, both Quake and Quake 2 were available (in their Linux form) on the id site.
