Don't quit playing just because of Phantom

(LANshark) #121

TF2 has stealth, Overwatch is planning on having stealth, a few Tom Clancy games have stealth (im looking at you Ghost Recon). Team based FPS’s like having stealth because, even if he does not work well in a team, he forces the enemy team to work together and generally raises map awareness for everybody in game. The problem with phantom is not that he has stealth, it’s that SD has tacked on a shield to the stealth (which makes no sense btw) in order to promote taking shots for your allies to get points.

If you are compaining about the sword remember that other mercs will eventually have it too when the next set of loadout cards come around. When this is i don’t know but it’s a thing.

Just adding a few more games to the list: Planetside 2 has stealth, Tribes ascend has stealth too. The more I think about it, most of the FPS that don’t categorize themselves as ‘‘realistic’’ have stealth.
In the next update I believe that the shielding part will be require just because of the fact that RedEye exist, Aimee too will be able to disable his cloak which will put 50% of the ability '‘useless’. In just a few weeks we will have 2 other recons that will be able to disable his ability, so yeah… I can kinda understand the shield part.

(Sanedro) #123

Phantom in game: I leave the server. no discussion. senseless to play.

I like dirty bomb, I don’t want quit it at all.
Phantom is “quite young” and I hope it will be removed. At least strongly nerfed.

(Ghosthree3) #124

There’s just no chance of him being removed when some people paid real money for him, or even credits.

(RyePanda) #125

So people talk a lot about how this game needs to be super skill based over in the “Do we really need aimpunch?” thread. My question is, how is an instakill where you don’t have to be precise skillful? Phantom’s katana doesn’t need a headshot to instakill, it requires just being close to the enemy, which isn’t hard with the amount of health and speed that he has, alongside his armor. So in my opinion, the katana makes this game less competitive and it is a cheap instakill achieved by just by waving your sword around wildly.

(watsyurdeal) #126

Except it doesn’t instant kill, it can only deal up 108 damage with it’s lunge, and that’s with chopper added on. So he will only kill Vasilli or lower, and on top of that, if you wanna talk about instant kills, the hollunds and remburg also have that capability, as do the Sniper Rifles.

The only difference is that the Katana’s lunge has a generous hitbox, which it needs because melee range is easy to get out of if you see it coming before hand. Which a lot of people don’t because they aren’t paying attention to what’s going on around them.

(Canucck) #127

So he will only kill Vasilli or lower

Only half the mercs! I never thought of it like that!

Tribes ascend has stealth too

And it was by far one of the worst aspects of the game. Also that game has been beyond dead for a long time now, do you think shit features like the Infiltrator has anything to do with that?

It’s more like 1/3 of them, and even when the remaining mercs are added, it’ll still only be about 1/3 of the total mercs.

So it’s hardly overpowered, if that’s true then PDP and the shotguns are way worse.

Yep, totally, it wasn’t the fact that Hi Rez completely dropped it and there hasn’t been any updates in over a year. No it was a harassment class that had multiple counters and was only fully invisible at speeds where everyone else could easily surpass.

Please actually understand the games a bit before you start replying. Infiltrator was a well balanced class except for the Jackal. He wasn’t strong enough to take on groups but was great at 1v1s since he had the first shot, all he could was harass and annoy people, he couldn’t do nearly the damage that Juggernauts, Doombringers, Brutes, Raiders, or Soldiers could.

(puzzlingPommel) #129

This thread is still alive?

shame

(Canucck) #130

Infiltrator was a well balanced class

I don’t care if he was balanced or not, it was a terrible class that had no point being in the game either way. Similar to the Phantom, an annoying class that takes away from gameplay rather than add to it.

The only real parallel is that Inf had 100hp more than every other light class because people that sat around invisible all day whined about taking splash damage, and hirez pandered to them because the Inf/jackel/etc sold well. The damage absorb of phantom’s cloak is the exact same kind of retardism. Full hirez

(watsyurdeal) #131

And your reply tells me how little you actually understood about him

Watch this, please, and shut up

As for Phantom, he does serve a purpose, and it’s simple. He is meant to be a counter against unorganized teams, lone wolfing, and bad communication. He is meant to be the punishment for terrible team work, which is what the game is about. On top of that, he serves as a picking class like Vasilli, where his goal is to kill specific players to allow for a push.

To say he doesn’t belong because he brings nothing to the game, is like saying the same for all of the assaults and ops. Realistically, we’d only need Support, Medic, and Engineer. But Assault and Ops serve as damage dealers, Assault is more tanky and bombastic about it, Ops are more tactical and require a little more imagination to use right.

Do I think Phantom could use some tweaks, sure, subtle ones that allow him to be more easily punished. But do I think he doesn’t belong? No, he does, he fits a role that the game needs, just because he happens to be your bane doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be here.

Stop wasting your time replying to him. Anyone that says that says that the infiltrator class didn’t bring anything to the game is just wrong and doesn’t even deserve an answer.

see that’s where you’re wrong.
the katana doesn’t “need” a generous hitbox because it’s not supposed to be used in face to face situations. it’s meant to be used on unsuspecting enemies that otherwise don’t expect you to come. That’s why it’s op. The generous hitbox + ohk means people just charge with it if caught, or even just plan that straight up. Stealth when balanced right in competitive video games is meant to be a skill based thing. If someones smart about being sneaky they should never experience an issue, because they’ll never be noticed. But if they’re noticed there should be no failsafe, a phantom player that failed to be sneaky should not be able to just run at their target and still kill them. It just implements the phantom as a no risk, all reward mercenary. These are the changes that need to be done to him:

nerfs:
-decrease base health down to 70
-decrease bullet sponginess of reactive armour. Instead of making him invincible, give him a 50% damage reduction with it on
-drastically decrease hit box of katana when right clicked
-force him to manually uncloak everytime he wants to perform an attack

buffs:
-make him more invisible (right now he is way too easy to see for being a “stealth” class )
-make the ringing he emits louder, but more spread out. That way dilligent people will know he’s in the area but not exactly where he is
-allow him to perform objective based tasks while cloaked ( ex. arming c4 ). except if performing one while cloaked, the cloak runs out 2x faster.

this would make him more centered around stealth, and he wouldn’t be able to just charge people unless whoever he’s charging has terrible aim

Its alive because of Phantom players defending their soon to be nerfed merc. They fear the coming balancing tweaks.

(Ghosthree3) #136

[quote=“debonairRogue;46880”]nerfs:

This is beyond bad.

why? because then he gets killed quickly rather than being able to charge head on?
this would cement him as a stealthy role merc
besides with his armour on he would have a total of 140 health. this would force phantom players to be smart about their cloaking

(avidCow) #138

(Ghosthree3) #139

Because 70 health would die to a light breeze. Add to it you didn’t give him more speed and you want him to manually disable his cloak before he can attack and he’s screwed.

You also wanted him to take reduced damage with the shield instead of just shielding it. 70 health would disappear.

(avidCow) #140

70 health is dumb. stop that.
