this has happened to me, in fact the game crashed whenever some one voice chated, i found that if you set sound quality to custom it crashes try setting to low or even high
of course im only speaking on my experience but im sure your sound cards ok ? right if so just reboot and try again tweeking settings around
remember win 32 users reboot reboot reboot
I haven’t heard about that problem before. maybe if you add more memory to the sound and a defragmentation of your hdd will help you

Good luck
I had this problem for the first week or so that I had ET.
I solved it by turning hardware sound acceleration on high.
Also make sure you haven’t turned down Sound Hardware Acceleration in DirectX or Windows. Some games (morrowind, for example) require you to run them with lower acceleration settings for compatibility. If you forget to ramp them back up, you’ll run into this kind of behavior.

This used to happen to me on Quake sometimes, and if the other sugestionos here didn’t help then reinstalling the sound card driver did
