Documentary about Designers

(redfella) #1

Hello,

My name is Eric and I am producing a documentary. My current focus is on Level Designers specifically, however I am not 100% commited to that topic. I may have to, and I could very easily, adapt a broader swath of the game design hobby and profession if need be. I ask that you keep that in mind when viewing the very preliminary website for this film: www.theleveldesigners.com

I’m trying to figure out if I can make a go of this project. A major challenge I have at the moment is finding good stories to tell. I believe that the world of game design and all that entails is quite fascinating, but perhaps I am just a bit biased. I personally haven’t done level design in over 3 years, but I still find this topic compelling and I think others (laymen) would too. I just have to discover some good and worthwhile stories to tell.

If anyone out there (hobbyist or professional) believes that have a story worth telling, please give me shout.

Thanks!

Definitely a good idea, there’s lots of scope to game design that the average gamer just doesn’t get to see. Maybe doc’s like this will spur more people into the gaming industry.

Since you’re all the way in NC, i’ll go to Splash Towers for you and do some interviews

mrfin on his old wbsite (when it was still about the bridges) had some nive story about motivation behind mappers, i tried to include some similar thing into my unfinished map’s unfinished readme coz i partially shared that view on the thing; but its gone now he have only vesuvius on his new site. u might ask for him if we have saved those html-s on his own pc. (btw im not even sure if it was there or somewhere else by somebody else… it was smth about fascination abt. some realworld structures, and that its a good experience for a mapper to create a virtual world for a game which brings it into life, realistic view walking in it etc, differnt from simply modeling stuff irl (ok this last thing is my addition), or smth like tihs, i dont remember it was long ago.)

As a student and a hobyist of level design I meet a lot of fellow students who are aspiring game developers. However there is suprisingly little little information available about what work is really like in the industry and how well ‘game’ focused degrees really prepare you for a career in games. From my experience many ‘game’ focused degrees dont teach the relevant skills for an aspiring level designer / artist etc. I was also suprised when speeking to a industry veterain and his opinions of how many of these ‘game’ degree students would every actuly make it into the industry

Im sure there is a lot of scope for some kind of documentary around this subject. Would be interesting to see an investigation into the realaties of the industry

maybe the articles/history/story/idk? on particular levels (eg. the 6 stock et maps; but there are many other there) on sock’s website could also give some insight
