Do you want Level to be shown or not? Or...

(yenku) #1

Lots of thread about, and still we have no answer about developers vision of levels.

Please explain your choice if possible. thx

I’ve made this poll because, it’s been asked don’t know how many times to hide level, but devs seems blind about this topic.
I would like to hear from them for once too.

@RazielWarmonic Hi Raziel,
I, as many here I guess, would like to really know why this request has never been listened. At least it seems so. Thank you

(SereneFlight) #3

…there’s no benefit for showing it but it seems to make people to be discouraged when the game isn’t “balanced” levelwise.

(Mrarauzz) #4

I’m tired of everyone being intimitaded by my lack of a life (lvl 53). I’m really not that good. Like above average but there are lower levels better than me and higher ones.

(FalC_16) #5

Let’s experiment a bit and hide the player levels for a while…

(Faraleth) #6

Personally I don’t want levels to even be in the game - I see no reason for them to be there at all, nor have I ever cared about leveling up.

However, the last we heard on stream was that they wanted to work on better ways to encourage and reward leveling. I don’t imagine they have changed this focus, so I wouldn’t expect them to remove it I’m afraid. :s

(Thai-San) #7

I’m level 31 by now and still play like shit compared to others around my level. Get my ass frequently handed to my by lvl 15s or even lower. But still I get votekicked or insulted for my level more often then I’d like it.

Every time the “Level up!” shows up I think “Fuck, not again!”. I’d love if I could hide it.

(Bestfinlandball) #8

I feel like if levels would be hidden player satifaction would be higher since players couldn’t get mad for “some lvl 9 noob killing the over and over”

(sentimentalDime) #9

Both things have advantages over the other, so I just don’t care.
I’ve only been ‘‘shamed’’ once, by a salty guy was was (shockingly) at the absolute bottom of the scoreboard, and I just shrugged it off.

(tominatorx) #10

The only thing they do is causing people to leave out of the game because they think high lvl automatically equals skilled player.

Just hide them and they wouldn’t probably notice it a lot of the time that they are playing against players with a higher rank.
It also helps me not knowing that I got my *ss handed by a lvl 5 player => less shame. :stuck_out_tongue:
(mirthfulPicture) #11

A uneven stomp is a uneven stomp, I dont see how hiding that a match is unevenly balanced will solve anything.

(tominatorx) #12

Sometimes people just leave your team and rage quit out of the game, just because the other team has a few more high lvl players and this results in uneven matches. From the last 10 matches I played, 3 of them were like that. We started 6v6 and as soon as the introduction to the level was shown, it was 4 vs 6.

So that’s why I would hide them.

(Supa) #13

I don’t mind having the levels being a personal reference. I find absolutely no point to them whatsoever other than making people salty, considering they cannot play well against higher levels. (Which is understandable, obviously.)

All the no-life level shaming is so dumb and unnecessary. On the higher end, a lot of long-term players get heckled constantly just for playing the game for as long as they have. Most people make the argument that skill has nothing to do with the level count, so considering that levels essentially mean nothing more than amount of time played, why are they in the game anyway?

There is also the argument that you should know what levels you are playing with, but why? Especially when it comes to games like Dirty Bomb, you can tell a new player from a seasoned veteran from a mile away.

At least in my eyes, the cons outweigh the pros here.

Show levels. Why not? It shows how much time someone has spent on the game and their skill related to it. Many people deny this but, more time means more experience which leads to more skill. Many people want to hide this people they dont want to feel that they lost a 1v1 gunfight from a lower level or because they get discouraged from leel 50s. I feel that. But there is no need to hide it. For most players, it serves as motivation as well. To challenge a highier level and become better and better. Level separates the experienced from the new ones. They serve as example. Why hide it? There are some players that are bad as highier levels but they are prob just fooling around or just not interested. Honestly, levels help me a fu%^ ton. Its a challenge and I can see how experienced players play the game. Oh, and when people get discouraged because you are level 50, just leave. Honestly. Look for min level 10 servers. Let them play.Im not level 50, but while some players hate you, lots of players look up at you, as motivation to be that good. Its not all bad, and the ones hating usually blame you rather then their own lack of skill. Really, dont be ashamed of being not as good, as level 50s. It doesnt mean all level 50s are pros and unbeatable with an amazing k/d. As long you’re doing the objective and guiding the team, you’re good.

And because of this exact same reason, highier levels are more and more cheating, to prove that they are as good, which is pathetic.

(Supa) #15

I see what you are saying in your post, but with this quote? MOST players are MOTIVATED by higher level players? I find it quite the contrary, considering most of the games I play result in 2v6 stacks from everyone leaving the team because of a level 30+ on the other team.

A lot of GOOD players who want to learn the game and become better are motivated, but not MOST players. My experience playing illustrates otherwise.

(Apofenas) #16

People use levels as an indicator of people’s skill. They are mistaken. However since level indicates amount of time player spent(how experienced they are), i’d like to have something in replacement. Something like trueskill rating system for pubs. Let it be inaccurate and not cover all aspects of game, but be there, so you could judje how much is the game balanced, with whom you stick around and whom you should be afraid off.

(SteelMailbox) #17

I like what BLR did with levels. Instead of showing the level to everyone you can choose to hide it or give yourself a title.
A title is basically some sort of name that replaces the level for example:

 • Founder - for being a founder member
 • Collector - getting all the loadout cards for all mercs
 • Up for hire - Own all currently released mercs
 • Dig a trench or bugger off - 1000 hours as Skyhammer

and so on.
Obviously the goals I put were pretty ridicules but that is to make the point.
1 problem I can see is Trademark since I don’t know if BLR put trademarks on the concept of titles.

There need to be more opportunities for balanced matches than currently exist in DB. Hiding levels does nothing to solve this issue.

Many new players grief veteran players when they are losing against them but usually have no issue participating in a stomp when they are on the stacked team. This sentiment is common to so many elements of the DB experience and is very frustrating. IMO levels indicate that a player should have a better understanding of how the game works and how it plays. It often does not mean that they have the best aim or are better than any player with a lower level. Playing against a skilled opponent is an excellent learning experience and the players that don’t realize that will find something else to complain about if levels aren’t shown.

From the streams it seems that the devs are committed to improving the ranked experience which will provide more opportunity for balanced matches. I think adding more min level servers would be a great idea as well.

(SereneFlight) #19

So people don’t get discouraged, which btw will affect how well they play, or won’t leave because “zomg this is so unbalanzed”?
Personally I don’t want levels to even be in the game - I see no reason for them to be there at all, nor have I ever cared about leveling up.

Well they won’t have to remove the whole system. Just hide it from other players.

(ZeSpecter) #20

I really don’t like leveling up in this game because people start expecting more from me lol

Whether or not to hide your rank, I’m kinda somewhere in the middle on that question. There are pros and cons for both hiding and showing level as people above me has stated. If levels will continue being shown - fine, doesn’t really that much to me, if levels will be hidden - fine. Again, doesn’t really matter that much to me.
