So we’ve been told they are implementing casual matchmaking. For those of you who don’t know what that is, we are pretty Mich going to have to que for a public match, and there will be penalties for leaving said joined public match.
I for one, am not looking forward to public matchmaking. I like the drop in drop out position. Then again I do see why people want this matchmaking. Balance should, in theory, improve greatly. Maybe this will actually male new players have a better impression of the game and we can start retaining new players. But, I really don’t like the idea of being penalized for leaving. As that will fix the “problem” of leavers it also takes away our freedom of a public game. I am someone who has learned not to care whether or not I win pubs so I don’t rage if I have a terrible team that often. So I really don’t have an issue with team balance. If I had an issue with team balance I might be for public matchmaking.
I watched the dev stream where Exedore first introduced the concept of public matchmaking in DB, but I’d like to see a bigger info-dump/get specific details of the system before I form an opinion. If it can be done right, I’m fine with it. If I get horrendous queue times like I do in competitive matchmaking, I’m done with DB. For me, it’s too early to say.
Same as @NetflixandKill … Not 100% sure how it will work in DB. I know how it works in other games but I dunno, it’s too early to say. If it makes us queue in sizes and crap like ranked does then hell no, keep it away.
I would love to queue with my friends but there is always 3-5 of us so if we have to sit there waiting for another queue of similar levels or ELO ratings or however it will work then no, it will kill the game. The player base just isn’t big enough for skill matched diversity in pub servers, especially over here in Australia / New Zealand.
If it will just pair anyone and everyone up together to fill servers as fast as possible then that might work. But then that wouldn’t exactly change anything from what it is now.
I’d like to know exactly how things would work first. Does it pair you up by skill/elo, or does it put you with randoms? Does it pair you up by level instead (which would suck, as we all know level doesn’t mean anything)? If you search as a 3 or a 4 or a 5 will it only pair you up with people also searching as 3/4/5’s or will it just put anyone with you? Those kinda things.
tl;dr - If I search public matchmaking as a pre-made 4 man team on the new system, what happens then? Do we only find other teams of 4? Do we find other teams of 4 who are only similar skill? Do we find any odd number of players as long as they are similar skill? Does team size and skill not matter at all? (if is pub after all, not ranked, so ELO/skill sounds totally retarded for pub games) etc. Just need some kind of explanation on how all scenarios work.
We still will have a server browser, and the Quick Join option constantly place me in empty servers and in non-level-restricted scrub chaos, so it won’t hurt if I will give it a try.
The whole reason people play pubs is because of the freedom they have. Being restricted on what they can do on terms of leaving or staying is just going to make the population that much smaller.
Worth mentioning, iirc, there will still be some servers that remain as they are now for people who don’t want to queue. But yes, I am for casual matchmaking.
The matchmaking when I did play ranked was much better than pub. Pub matchmaking deems that if you do “too well”, you will be punished by being fucked raw and dry right up the back door by “matchmaking” putting you onto a team of people playing with their monitors turned off. The system is bone-headed in expecting, often times, one or two people to carry a team of morons if those one or two people are above average. It’s absurd and needs to change.
The matchmaking stream VoD on DirtyBomb’s twitch is gone so I may be totally wrong, but I’m pretty sure Exedore said they’d be removing Quick Join and Server Browser. The absence of a server browser was the only real reservation I had with casual matchmaking, but hopefully you are right because I like being able to choose my map/mode every time.

I don’t know how you had such a good experience with ranked matchmaking, because I’ve had a terrible time. My placement games were all crap (someone left my team pretty much every time and I was placed in a 10 pound bag of potatoes for every team), so I was placed in Bronze 3. It takes at least 15 minutes to even find a game now, and when I do the other team is high silver / low gold, because matchmaking has to go to max skill gap searching. I’ve steamrolled in losses, and now matchmaking tells me to expect 20+ minute waits for a game now. (Needless to say, I’m waiting until S2 to start again).
I really really hope we have little/no skill based matchmaking in pubs. If I have long wait times like I do now in comp then I won’t be able to even get into a game.

I’ve heard this quite a few times before – that we’ll have some servers left, and browser for them, of course. I’ll be very and unpleasantly surprised if this is some “miscommunications”.

I had a mostly good MM experience too, but I duo-queued with my friend, and I always had a reliable medic to cover my back. Unfortunately it died out on it’s own because there’s little incentive to play “serious” MM versus goofy pubs.
PSST, SD, make an expert case drops instead of normal and I’ll stay in MM with my mate forever.
What we actually need is the teams to be balanced from the start, if a new player joins they will always be matched with the team that needs them more (AKA the losing team) regardless of the player count and maybe an auto-balance system which will shuffle the teams if it detects that there is no balance.
Also when an auto shuffle vote passes, they should make it so all players are killed (not only the once moved to the opposite team) and force the reinforcements to be 4 seconds after everyone is killed. Also pause the timer for 15 seconds after the vote has passed
There should be not a Matchmaking system, but rather a MatchSkill advisor in the browser.
Click on server in the browser, it gives you server average rank. OR just says “Too easy - Easy - Match - Difficult - Are you out of your mind, B1atch??”
Make a browser built in filter Show only “Difficult/Match/Easy” etc
TBH, I don’t get why there’s a need for pub matchmaking if it’s becoming so similar to ranked. Why not just make ranked more appealing by increasing the credit rewards significantly or something? Maybe even add in ranked Objective or ranked Execution, too. Leave server browser as is and don’t take any servers away from it pls.
Is it really? Because I can’t even find any indication of that in game. It should be more heavily advertised if both SD and a good amount of players want this type of mode to be more frequently played, especially if predominately.
I want a pretty lax form of casual MM because: 1. I want to consistently find games where people know what is their merc role. No more Auras figuring how to use the defibs, no more deaf Skyhammers, and don’t even get me started on Sparks trying to pick you up manually… I have no business being on the same server with people with 3h of playtime. I don’t enjoy wrecking them, they don’t enjoy being wrecked. I don’t see free slots on min level servers often enough. I have better things to do than waiting.
2. I want it to group leavers and AFKers together - if you don’t care about fucking up the game for the remaining 11+ players, then surely you won’t mind playing with people of the same sort.
3. No half empty servers with teams that can’t be balanced properly due to lack of players, and then joining players often make it even worse.
4. The only way to implement 3-6 groups in casual without them consistently wrecking the other team. Again, no fun for either side.
I wrote I want it “pretty lax” because I want it to be more of a warden that matches similar people by their behavior (leaves/afks or not), by numbers (groups or solo), by experience (like I described in point 1), and then by some approximation of skill. The last component is actually the least important one to me.
At worst it will work just like the current server browser - it will match random people together. Actually no - it will still be better because it will handle parties much better. At best it will improve every aspect of casual DB. There are no downsides.
I’m voting no opinion because I would select a different option from the poll if it was available.
I mostly want casual MM to go hand in hand with community servers. So you can still use the server browser to join any community server (or private match server that’s hosted) and get that drop in/drop out gameplay that is more closely managed by, hopefully, competent server admins. While also having the option to queue up for a casual game that will try to balance me with others who are in the same bracket or allows me to easily play with my friends or some new people I’ve brought into the game.
So I am looking forward to casual MM as it fixes a ton of problems but I want community servers to be a thing at the same time. If DB currently had community servers and they were removing those in favor of a queue I’d be all NOPE NOPE NOPE. But that’s not the case. All it’s replacing is our nameless/faceless/non-community driven servers.
Also, it doesn’t mean that SD/Nexon can’t keep some servers up. They might even be able to customize them and keep them up as named community servers with things like FF on and merc limits.
So we aren’t really losing much of anything as long as community servers and other specialized servers will exist.
