dm-->avi

Hi Ive been messing about trying to make a demo for my clan of everyones defensive coverage area/mine/spam placement and so on. The thing is when I extract a 77k demo into screenshots using cl_avidemo 24. It runs to over 400MB and thus the avi is about the same. The thing is the screen resolution is only 640*480. What the hell am I doing wrong, especially having seen10-15 min frag movies with effects and sound that only run to a few hundred mb. Please help me. Thanks

first go to this website http://www.virtualdub.org/index and download the proggie, this will help u make vids out of the screenshots u made in the demo’s

Second, download a good encoder like Xvid, or Divx. When u compile the video make sure u set it 2 encode with either divx or xvix, this will save ALOT of space.

I was using the quake video maker. So is it the actual encoding of my avi that occupies all the space or is it something with the screenshots? what are sensible settings to ensure clear, yet usable screenshots and what would everyone recommeend setting avidemo to?

You can calculate the needed space for the TGA’s with the following formular:
MB = fps * time (sec) * resolution x * resolution y * 3 / (1024 * 1024)
Remark:
As far as I know TGA’s are stored with 3 bytes per pixel (thats the explanation for the 3).
Example:
The space needed for TGA’s for a 60 second movie in a resolution 640 by 480 and with 24 fps is:
MB = 24 * 60 * 640 * 480 * 3 / (1024 * 1024) = 1,265.6 MB
Thats about 1.25 GB.
The avi that you have created hasn’t been encoded. It uses every single TGA as it is.
Therefore the resulting movie has been as big as the sum of all the TGA’s.
There are some other programs that are useful. I will post links later on.

EDIT:
You can get the divx-codec at the divx Website.
Theres a free one and a free but ad supported version.
Another program that is able to encode TGA’s is bjbmp2avi which is freeware.

EDIT2:
If you use pjBmp2avi you still have to use a codec (for example divx).
A codec is not included with pjBmp2avi.

i use pjbmp2avi, best codec for compression imo is XviD. Just play around with the settings till ur happy. Experiment on a small 10 sec clip 1st before encoding it all.

I finished my movie in the end. I had to compress the hell out of it, so the images are a bit grainy, but the major problem is the pictures are all so dark. why is this?

r_gamma
r_mapoverbrightbits

and check the XviD/DivX codec settings when compressing.
