And yet you have not provided any facts. Monday Night Combat has its DLC for free. Portal 2, another Valve game, will also have free DLC. I’m more than willing to admit I’m wrong on this issue once you provide some actual facts to support your case. Saying ‘fact is’ does not make it a fact.
@ Jess Alon: Just becaue an advantage is not clear does not mean that it does not exist. The choice to charge for DLC that includes skills and weapon attachments, increases level caps and has new maps will only cause a rift in the community. The level cap increase is game-breaking and the skills and attachments will more than likely cause certain advantages so this only compounds the issue. I’d personally be fine if they released the level cap increase, weapon attachments and skills for free and only made the maps free for 2 weeks. In this manner only the maps would separate the players and this does not affect the game’s balance in any way.
In the end, Microsoft has the last call in whether any DLC will be free or cost money since they are hosting the downloads, which is also why Valve had such a hard time releasing L4D DLC. Also, any DLC that provides additional achievements cannot be free on XBL by Microsoft’s ruling (this is how L4D DLC was made free, Valve took out any achievements that say, PC gamers got with their DLC so that it could remain free).
Also, the point about Portal 2 having free DLC should have no validity in discussions about Brink for a few reasons.
- That DLC probably isn’t going to have achievements on the xbox360, and will lack anything else needed to assure it is released as a free DLC.
- Valve is by far one of the largest and most powerful video game companies in the market these days, and MS would be insane to not support their games, as it would lose them a lot of money if people didn’t pick up any more Valve games on their system. Unfortunately, the creators behind Brink aren’t sitting in such a high seat of power in the gaming market, and thus will probably not be able to arrange quite as good of deals with Microsoft over their content.
