DLC and the Value Realistically

(Jess Alon) #1

So there’s been issues at launch, but we haven’t even gotten to the end of the month yet. So I’m still waiting and I don’t want to make any “official” complaints yet.

Keep in mind this thread addresses console gamers not PC gamers who want a SDK.

What I would like to know from my community is how much content would make Brink be worth 60 dollars to you? If you knew that Splash Damage was going to be releasing DLC for free on a monthly basis until the end of the year with a significant amount of content each time.

How many maps would Brink require for you to feel you’ve gotten what you paid for?

I don’t care about all the other stuff people are arguing about. I just want numbers on maps.

Because I honestly feel like once my gameplay is mostly lag free with full teams. This DLC is really icing on the cake. Because Brink has been worth the money for me. I love it.

So tell me… how much free DLC would have to drop in addition to the fixed lag for you to feel happy about what you spent?

I’m curious about people’s answers. And I’m wondering how many people can just get over the “bad launch” in order to enjoy the game. This forum’s seen too much negativity.

I think if they would vary the objective order on the maps, it would help spice things up as well without having to build a full-blown new map.

I think 10-12 maps total, some distinguishably different weapons, and maybe an added skill or 2 by the end of the year would be great. The lag has almost completely subsided for me (PS3) and I’m enjoying it more now that I have real actually humans playing with me and against. It’s doing well, but as you said, probably not worth the 60 I invested in it. (I actually only spent 40 because wal-mart gave me hell then credited me, but yeah, worth the 40 already!)

What would you like to see in the DLC? Because there’s always room for more in a great game.

(Ziggus) #3

It’s pretty much already worth $60 TO ME, especially if the coming patch does indeed fix the lag problem some people are having and there by boost the player population.

Why?

  1. I’ve already played this game more then the last game I paid $60 for

  2. There are not many other fast paced objective based shooters for 360 (I already have and play Monday night Combat)

  3. If this game had a “story mode”, I probably wouldn’t play it all the way through anyway.

  4. I don’t enjoy COD style games. Even if I only paid $40 for one I doubt I’d play it long enough to get my money’s worth.

I more then welcome as many new maps as they release. I also FULLY understand why some people don’t feel they got their money worth from this game, but I had $60 to spend, and there was no other game available that I’d rather spend $60 on.

Yes, I could have held onto the money until the next great “bang for your buck game” came out, but I probably would have spent it all on eating out and craft beer long before then. Now, there’s nothing wrong with craft beer and good food, but as long as we’re talking bang for you buck, it wouldn’t have lasted as long as Brink

I definitely want some more unique weapons, ALA Mass Effect 2 style, where the DLC packs came with 3-4 new weapons that were all unique from each other, in functionality.

Alternate objective order would be really nice, and would help spice things up.

(Bakercompany) #5

What I’ve already heard about had me happy. A few maps? 3-5? Thats good for me. Plus lag and AI fixes. It would make me regret my purchase a lot less.

Adding lobbies would make me not regret my purchase at all.

(Gamer2Gamers) #6

I don’t think it’s worth 60 dollars you got to be a glutton for punishment otherwise, this game was marketed as having seamless multiplayer within normal campaign so the story should of meant something to them but as the masses have spoken it’s pretty much well noted the story is a mixture of crap and garbage.

people who do play single player games do exist and I think it’s a really bad habit for developers to forget about those people, if someone says “well they shouldn’t get brink then” that is pretty stupid because if you’re only limiting yourself to that market your gonna die if it sucks or even if it’s good (Shadowrun)

I like this game don’t get me wrong but there is a few things about it that just agitate the living crap out of me if they can fix it, I’ll shut my mouth but as of right now, nah - I’m going to ride this game out till the end though because I do realize everything can be fixed but will they be fixed correctly is the question.

p.s.

I am just talking about the game and it’s current state it’s hard for me to think of anything about maps right now because it just lags to much but if things are patch up i would love more “what if” scenario missions maybe even some that expand off the ark - perhaps more challenge missions - A race mode fully utilizing the parkour and weapons …i don’t know they need to think outside the box since people are fixated with saying this should not be COD.

/rant done

(Brink Lags) #7

Why are people talking about DLC when the game doesn’t function properly yet? DLC for a broken experience is pointless. Lag on old maps? Lag on new maps? What’s the difference?

No lobby on old maps? No lobby on new maps? Hello?

An addition to the abilities would make me happy. I like what’s there but I wish there was enough that even if you put all your points into universal abilities and specialized only in one class that there would be a much greater variation in characters even if they are straight up soldier or medic.

Kind of like when you play an RPG and you have to choose to be really good with a one handed sword or a two handed sword or duel wielding. Or just be average at them all. I’d like to see splash damage really develop the abilities so that every character’s skill set is different and teams can REALLY compliment each other. Even if they have the same class they have strengths that compliment the strengths of other people playing that same class on their team instead of being carbon copies. I think that day will actually come. It’d probably be the easiest to implement because you don’t need artists for some abilities. Just a concept and some balancing. Oh and the voice actors would need to add vocal cues for the abilities for existing voice packs. But I’m sure that’s not too hard.

Additional costumes are fine by me but as it stands I can’t even make up my mind about what I want for any of my characters I have so many choices. What I don’t have a lot of is voice packs. But I see that arriving in the future as well. Probably as paid DLC. Those voice actors have to eat.

The 8 maps that come with the game are quality maps and I’m always finding new hiding spots and choke points and sniper allies. All kinds of things. I’ll play with people and they will disappear and then ninja me from above and I’ll come back to find there was a platform I didn’t even know about before. These maps are beautiful. So yeah I’ll take more of those.

But I already feel like I got my money’s worth regardless of DLC.

(peteXnasty) #9

Game should have 15 maps (total, so 7 more) to keep everything varied.
A few extra guns, but making new guns isn’t as simple as everyone thinks
At least 6 more challenge maps
A lobby and party system

And then you have a 60 value until they can start making fun extra content. I like the idea of foot races. Maybe a game type where 8 players compete to grab one package and get it to a particular finish line but without guns, only slide tackles. He who stays airborne wins. I dunno. First add what should already be there in content and then add outfits and special extras.

(Bloodbite) #10

$15 for 4 mediocre maps for CoD_whatever
$10 for 4 maps for Crysis 2 (which is hacktastic right now)
$15 for 5 maps and other extras for BFBC2 Vietnam

4 or 5 maps is what used to be considered Patchable content.

DLCs should be proper expansions. If there are only 4 multiplay maps, throw in another 4 co-op only challenges that have real potential for competitive league usage, a fistful of new outfit customisations or just make customisation DLCs really cheap separate DLC packs (which I’m guessing is the way things will go).

And here’s something I’d be willing to pay for as DLCs… proper singleplay only campaigns. Break them up into episodes if need be, but make them proper singleplay levels (I suppose this could be co-op’ed as well). Make an engineer class only episode that details the rise of Chen, or whoever that has a backstory as an engineer… it fills in the story for those of us that dig this whole Ark concept while expanding on the implementation of each class system into a different game format (ie away from the multiplay mechanic). If SplashDamage needs help on that front I already have some ideas on what I’d like to see done in that arena.

(Seiniyta) #11

Some here really have unrealistic demands to say the least. You expect Splash Damage to just churn out maps like it’s nothing. The maps we have are more advanced and thought out then any other map in the gaming industry. They are so full of detail, having cutscenes and what not it’s unreasonable to say they will add 4-5 maps to a next free dlc. That’s just insane. I bet the maps we’ll get were ones already in progress for quite a bit but not ready for launch due time contraints.

(Glyph) #12

I hate to say it but the maps are not more complex. To be honest having a linear series of objectives actually makes them easier to balance rather than having 6+ randomized game types placed on them. SD merely has to place 3, or fewer, objectives in total in fixed locations on every map.

If Brink’s maps have multiple objectives that were assigned randomly then yes, I would agree that they would be much harder to create. As they always have one team attacking and the other defending and never include more than 3 primary objectives I fail to see how they take longer to make.

(i0nz) #13

id like the Ak-47 added perhaps =P

on top of this an SDK

and maybe a team to scrim with

(Protector) #14

I think the game has definately been worth the money but I think the game needs

  • 3 or 4 new maps
  • A couple of new game modes, CTF and KOTH would be great…does anyone remember the TZW Tournaments from DF Landwarrior!?
  • A ranking system that goes on alot further than lvl 20…
  • More weapon attachments
  • More player customizations
  • More weapons, especially an AK style gun

All that and i’m very happy atleast! until I have played another 50 hours of it!

(Jess Alon) #15

Makes me think of This is Spinal Tap and their amps that go to 11. A maximum number is subjective. What I think would be more important is to keep the level cap at 20 and increase the amount of abilities in order to make people make tough choices. I’d like to see splash damage keep adding to that end of the game so that there is more variance amongst characters in the future. Adding a whole lot of culture and growth and individualism to the game that other games don’t have. That’s a niche that Splash Damage can fill that no one else will. We shouldn’t want our characters to level up to some super high level and then prestige or something. We should want to be able to build 10 completely different maxed out characters that all play completely different depending on how we feel like playing that day. To do that we need more variance in abilities, not a higher level cap.

(Protector) #16

See my thinking behind the level system is that once you create a game with rewards, you get used to recieving little goodies and once your at the top and no longer recieve anything you feel a bit dishearted and the game becomes less fun. The key to long term success for this game is to keep people wanting more and as it stands once you get to level 20 youve had the lot.

(DazTroyer) #17

The thread about dlc disappointing everyone is true!!! Jeez some of you have unrealistic expectations.

If we get one new map free I’d think we did well. Your not gonna get a sp campaign or new game modes lol.

(Jess Alon) #18

Well ETQW just gave you a few things in each class that leveled up. There was no remarkable customizable cross over leveling system. And people still play that game. I think the key to long term success for splash damage is a community that understands their vision of gameplay and doesn’t try to make it into something else. I think that they should add a LOT more abilities overall personally to make people want to respec and fill up all their character slots. Because I’ve used 4 of my 10. Soldier, Agent, Engineer, Medic. That’s it. I would like to see more abilities come along that make choices harder for you.

Something like a universal ability called “Catlike Reflexes” that allows you to jump out of a knock down twice as quickly.

Maybe a universal ability that makes your jumps just slightly higher or make you slight slightly further.

Or an engineer ability that allows you increase your turrets damage or tracking but you can only choose one or the other. That would keep players guessing when they see a turret. Is it going to see me faster? If it sees me will it do more damage then usual?

These are all things I’ve come up with that all the developers would have to do is change some parameters in the game.

I think abilities are going to be the new free DLC update that makes or breaks brink. And keep things interesting. And we could have test lobbies to see which abilities are terrible and which are really well done. Splash Damage could continue their stellar relationship with their clients.

And the more widespread and diverse the abilities are the less boring the game will be because each character you play as will be your very own.

That’s what I want to see in the future. And I know it can happen.

Don’t argue with that guy about single player. He obviously has never played a splash damage game in his life before Brink.

(Shotgun Surgeon) #20

I just want the mother****ing lag and matchmaking fixed. You can keep your 400 maps and 50 extra game modes.
