DL, RATE server settings

(Slaw) #1

set sv_maxRate “13000” // 10000 standard but poor for ET
set sv_dl_maxRate “42000” // increase/decerease if you have plenty/little spare bandwidth

what is this 13000?? Mb? Kb? or what?

thanks.

(duke'ku) #2

bytes.

sv_maxrate/1024^3 = gigabytes

you can do the rest.

(Slaw) #3

How much you would recommend “BYTES” for the long time playing? 20 players total 24/hours day. 30/day month

(Slaw) #4

May be problem in that? Anybody can comment?

Server still accessible but with very little speed to udp 27960

Impossible to load the game statement…

Before this - it was 10 hours without problems…

Its patched.

ATM we have set our servers to 15000 (150Kb/sec) so on a 20 player server every player will use about 7.5Kb/sec (this is about single isdn speed or very fast 56k6 modem)

Our servers do use about 300Kb/sec, so if you make a calculation with this and we say the server is full for 12 hours a day then we use:
1 minute => 60sec x 300Kb/sec = 18Mb
1 hour => 60min x 18Mb = 1080Mb (+/- 1 Gig)
12 hours => 12h x 1080Mb = 12960Mb

So it will use about 13 Gig daily, 90 Gig a week, 360 Gig a month.
I hope your ISP doesnt mind :banana:

So, what is you settings for sv_dl_maxRate “???”

Ok maxRate=15000…

Actually I totally don’t care how much traffic it eat… 100Mb/s connection… I have free 3TB for it.

Yes it should looks approx like 13-15GB/day
But I totaly don’t understand what is this maxrate and dl_maxrate

thanks.

(Spookstah) #7

maxrate = total badwidth that is available for the game/players
dlmaxrate = i think it has 2 do with downloads you have on your site, like punkbuster and/or new maps etc.

(Slaw) #8

I think you are not right about maxrate

And 15000 bytes is just 15Kb, not 150.

Who know exactly what is maxrate?? And what to set?

thanks.

(uber_noob) #9

maxrate = total bandwidth that is available for each client. So if you set it to 25000 (25 KB/sec) every client on the Server can get 25 Kb/sec, the number of clients doesn’t matter here.

dlmaxrate = i think it has 2 do with downloads you have on your site, like punkbuster and/or new maps etc.

Right, it’s the max rate of map and/or mod downloads from your server.

(Spookstah) #10

Thanks i didnt know that maxrate whas in Kb/sec, so on our servers all players can use 15Kb/sec.

But does anyone knows how much Kb/sec a player really needs ?

On our Global Operations server every player did use about 7.5Kb/sec so im curious what an ET player needs.

(duke'ku) #11

It’s in bytes/sec. Don’t divide by 1000 either. Divide by 1024. 1024 bytes to a kilobyte, 1024 kilobytes to a megabyte, 1024 megabytes to a gigabyte, 1024 gigabytes to a terabyte…

(Awol) #12

I have my maxrate set to 5000 no problems at all. No one has complained about it and I haven’t noticed anything weird about it.

(DG) #13

sv_maxrate = max rate allowed per player
maxrate 13000 = a maximum of 13kbytes/s per player.
sv_dlmaxrate = maximum rate a player can download files, not relevant unless you have custom maps/pk3’s or whatever.

they wont actually use all the available bandwidth all of the time, only when it is all needed (typically in a large space where it has to track many other players). upping your maxrate to 15000 from 10000 is unlikely to add 50% bandwidth usage, it will however allow broadband players to use the extra on the occasions they need it. players running alone in small corridors might only be using a couple of k, then usage leap up when he gets towards an open area with a dozen people firing at each other.

even on top of this, the rate the player will use is capped by both server and client. a cable/dsl user will probably have it capped at 25000 and so the server maxrate kicks in to limit the rate first. a modem’er might have set rate to 3000, and so he will still be limited to only 3000.

/rate (clientside) resp. /sv_maxrate (serverside) are setting the maximum traffic (in Bytes) a player can cause per second (the lower value of both is taken).

Assuming a player causes 10 kByte/s traffic (/rate 10240 resp. /sv_maxrate 10240). This will lead to:
For 1 player: 10 kByte/s => 606010 kByte/h = 36 MByte/h
or: 36 MByte/(hplayer) * 24 * 30 => 25920 MByte/(monthplayer) => about 26 GByte/(monthplayer)
(GByte/(month
player) = GByte per month and player)

26 GByte/(month*player) * 20 players = 520 GByte/month traffic

So the maximum traffic on a 20 players ET server with sv_maxrate=10000 should be about 520 GByte within one month.

When you decrease the sv_maxrate to 8000 and decrase the number of players to 16 you will get:
520 GByte/month*(8000/10240)*(16/20) = 325 GByte/month
When your server is only 50% percent full in avarage (e.g. if its empty during night time or you password it for private use), you will end up with about 150 GByte/month.

so 30 gig a month wont get me nothing?¿?..i know this is a old topic but, just woundering

(=TAC=Chron) #16

i got my server set for 13000 and shooting for 75GB transfer a month with pk3 downloads set up http at a remote server with higher transfer.

you could probably get by with 30gig if you were passworde clan server or cut the maxrate way back. but don’t forget that your server probably won’t be full 24/7.

but you might get by with a 10-14 person server, maybe…

([FF]Deckoh) #17

cool…its just a test server for clan mates not the offical server for public

([fun]scott) #18

out rtcw servers use about 1 TB every 14 days. (two servers) maxrate = 12000 so same as et
