distributing ET.exe ? can i just distribute ET.exe if i ...

can i just distribute the ET.exe file if i make a total conversion mod that doesn’t use anything in the etmain folder? but if it does, can i just redistribute selective files with the mod?

or would i have to tell people to download 200+ MB for a <2MB file?

Well a true TC would have it’s own executable. If you can’t make your own executable, it’s basically still an ET mod, not a TC.

i wonder why those other total conversion mods are called total conversions when they still use the original executable. urban terror still uses the quake3.exe but they say it’s a total conversion.
if a total conversion mod had it’s own executable then would it still be a mod? what would it be a total conversion of?

1.3.0 - What is a Total Conversion?

A total conversion is a special kind of mod that changes so many things in Quake III Arena that it looks like a completely new game. Urban Terror is a TC mod because it adds new weapons, player models, sounds, maps, damage system, physics and many new game play options which make it difficult to recognize the mod from Quake III Arena.

OK fine, wiseass. You answered your own question then, didn’t you? If UrT requires Quake III be installed, then your TC will require that the user already have ET.

yes, i know they’d have to have et installed, but if the tc doesn’t use all the et files like the 200+ pk3 file, then i could just let people download just the et.exe file, but i’d probably need permission from some one to do that, which is why im asking.

your first reply seems smart alecky. maybe it is maybe it isn’t. mine too.

Your definition of “TC” is wrong. By that criteria, something like RTCW is merely a “Quake3 TC”, or AmericasArmy is just a “UT TC”. They both include their own executable, after all!

Since the days of Doom (or at least Quake1), “Total Conversion” has always meant that all the art, map, and script resources were replaced, but not the executable code itself. Counterstrike, for example, is a HalfLife TC. It uses the halflife exe, but all the rest is new.

I’d have to actually try to decipher the license, but I’m pretty sure you can’t without some seperate license agreement (which I think Silicon Ice managed to get, so maybe you can, too…). They usually have this thing about only being redistributed in full without any modifications.

(squadjot) #8

what would you call wildwest ‘mod’ for rtcw…? :stuck_out_tongue:

(Domipheus) #9

a mod? O_o

(Domipheus) #10

"You shall not distribute the Software bundled, co?packaged or together with any material. "

According to that line, having the ET setup included in the same setup file as your mod, untouched, is illegal - let along only distributing the exe.
