Disguises and their usefulness

(Wraith) #1

This is sparked from over at the other forums but I thought I should bring it over here to get the PC users and devs comments on this.

In short how useful will disguises be? I have heard Radho’s epic game winning disguise story so yes they do work.

My opinions are in the thread, please note this is not about the new addition to the disguise that sparked the original thread but the disguise that has been described to us by SD so far.

i think the disguis thats out ther atm is pretty weak as quoted in the brink bible 2.0

  • According to a hands-on preview, an Operative’s disguise will be compromised if he fires his weapon, or if the player whose disguise he is wearing, gets too close to him. - Disguised Operatives cannot receive buffs from enemies.

i think there should be an upgraded version of the disguise so that it only goes when you hit an enemy and you can recieve buffs from enemies because otherwise its a pretty weak diguise. you would actually be better off carrying a blade of grass out infront of your face screaming “I AM INVISIBLE!!” everytime an enemy walks by.

Maybe you should keep your disguise if you kill with a silenced weapon AND the enemy didn’t see you kill him.

the disguise mechanism in wolf:et was perfect and fun. it’s sad that they changed that, especially that a disguise gets compromised when the source player gets too close. and it was always funny to get medpacks from an enemy

i enjoyed disguises in ETQW. hopefully it will be simillar, or even more enjoyable, in brink

(LyndonL) #6

Anyone else find it ironic that TheTank is disguised as TehTank in the disguise thread?

(CVIChEK) #7

Maybe if you have an silenced weapon, you don’t lose the disguise if no one is looking at you while you fire.

(tokamak) #8

With friendly fire off I see no point in disguises.

(Striker92) #9

i wont be playing on ff off servers…i hope.

(Seyu) #10

ff’s on by default, right?

(BioSnark) #11

last I heard, ff is off when voip is off. seems like a fair trade off for the disguise system.

(tokamak) #12

Which is the default.

(Crytiqal) #13

Those settings are linked??

(BioSnark) #14

I didn’t read the most recent forum discussion on the topic but that was the last I heard.

The system in W:ET for Co Ops worked really well IMO where they could get ammo / health from the enemy in disguise, and encouraged teamplay, just with the enemy. Good fun and very difficult to pull off successfully with all the checks and tells, even with FF enabled.

Perhaps there’s an operative perk that allows them to gain that ability at higher levels?

According to a hands-on preview, an Operative’s disguise will be compromised if he fires his weapon, or if the player whose disguise he is wearing, gets too close to him. - Disguised Operatives cannot receive buffs from enemies.

Maybe the enemies will see that you get the buff, but you actually don’t. As for weapon fire, slide knockdown and melee for the kill seems obvious.

Nah i think if your cheeky enough to get that close to a Buff giving class on the other team you should be rewarded by actually getting the buff 5 seconds later if they still haven’t found you out

“FF is off by default on consoles” (that’s pretty much a quote from the Fragworld interview with Badman and Bongoboy).

This implies it’s different for PC’s. Obviously, if you are running your own playnow server you can set it up however you would like. There is a big question as to how campaign servers work on PC and who will be running them (many clans won’t bother running a server they’d seldom get to play on). My guess is FF will be off by default on most campaign servers run by hosting companies.

I like the idea of accepting the buff but not really being able to use it. You sort of palm the thing like a magician

The disguise thing is difficult, there needs to be some what to discover the guy, but doing that by test firing at him is kind of weak. Granted, an operative can disccover another operative, so maybe this is enough, Once discovered by the other operative he’s “psotted” for everyone. That plus getting close to the guy who you stole the disguise from (makes perfect sense, hey, that’s me over there!) I wonder if it would work if these were the only two ways to discover an operative?

hmmm, say you can’t discover* him by probing fire (even FF on you just shoot at the guys legs), then in addition to the two ways above the only other way would be noticing he’s not taking buffs?

*that’s not saying you can’t kill him, if you were sure he was an operative you have to be able to kill him after all, you just don’t get any enemy hit indicators. Of course, this wouldn’t work with FF off but maybe there’s some work around for FF off situations.

In the “A Matter of Class” video the Operative fires his weapon but doesn’t magically change back into original clothes. Maybe, an operative being compromised doesn’t mean he turns back into his clothes, but instead the game is just like “Hey! That guy isn’t on your team! Shoot him!” So with the disguise compromised, a player that isn’t paying attention will just think it is another teammate for a second. I always though disguises would be more useful just allow you to alway have the element of surprise.

(Cankor) #20

Sure he does, they just don’t show it  Seriously, look at it again, there’s no view of the operative after he kills the guy (probably because it would be confusing and too much to explain in a quick vid).
