A friend and I noticed that if you drop a landmine (or dynamite or just our dead body with a /kill in the right spot) on an airstrike smoke can, the can will just explode with a “can’t see target” msg and there’s no airstrike.
So I was wondering if it’s considered a legit technique or not, though I guess it’s not exactly one of the most useful.
Disarm the Airstrike!
it’s known since way back, but commonly one just goes prone on the can, or duck or stand on it.
I don’t play in leagues, so I can’t say much about it being illegit, but I guess it’s not.
Is it just me, or is it much harder to cancel (prone on them) airstrikes since the patch? You have to do it like immediately, sometimes before it even gets to the ground, or else it just wont work.
it’s always been a well known tactic going into the RtCW days.
I find it much easier to block airstrikes in RtCW than in ET for some reason. I find proning on top of a canister somewhat unreliable. As there are those fubar hit boxes when going in prone, I think they will somewhat exist when attempting to block airstrikes.
I don’t think anything’s changed in ET w/r/t air strike canisters and blocking, but it’s really not that viable most of the time. In the last four months of tournament play, I’ve only blocked one canister; generally it’s not worth trying unless:
- the FD ops throws it very close to you (most of the time, FD ops don’t waste charge bar on air strikes at all)
- there are teammates around
I think it’s fair game to be able to block airstrikes considering how over the top some servers get , but as you may block them , they’ll still explode and take out who ever is prone on top of them.
Nah, you can jump away before they blow up. Don’t have to prone either. I do find AS blocking a bit harder than in RTCW, but it can be done without taking damage in ET.
AFAIK, it is permitted most (if not all) competition rules.
If spawn camping and arty spamming are legit tactics, why would diving on airstrike cans be illegal?
“Oh you bastard, you dived on my can. Now I actually have to use my gun…”
What crap.
It shouldn’t be legit as its unrealistic that by standing on a signal anyone can see a plane can’t see it :disgust:
If ya want something realistic you always have America’s Army. Other than that E.T. is all it’s own flavor. Maybe a little unrealism is what made E.T. so popular to begin with.

Well then lets take away Medics revive needles because they’re totally unrealistic too. Idiot. :disgust:
While we’re on the topic of airstrikes…
I seem to recall that you could control airstrikes in RtCW (only played multi once on a crappy comp… couldn’t see/do anything) by droping the smoke and running. The spread would always go away from you (as in, if I drop smoke and run back to the left, the spread would be to away from me and to the right.) I can only seem to drop strikes 90deg. from my angle of throw now.
Am I just going crazy here, or was that the case in RtCW… If so, sad to see it go…
Obviously, because it could be a bug.
When one finds out that you can prevent an airstrike by dropping a landmine on a can, I think it’s pretty natural to think that it might just be a bug. Taking advantage of bugs is considered unfair in most games, hence the doubt if it was an allowed technique or not. And since I don’t really care if it’s a bug or not (I just wanted to know if I could do it or not and it can be considered fair game even if it’s a bug, since it’s not easy to exploit) I went directly to the point and asked if it was legit.

I would imagine that blocking it with your body would be legal, but the mine part of it does seem like a bug so probably not
Yep you can still aim your airstikes, you just have to back away from your thrown can (still facing it) and circle around/to the side of it. If done correctly it will strike parallel to where you are facing when the planes come over. Bit of a shite explantion I know, anyone else care to give an explanation (I did see a diagram once which made it clear to me)
I understand what you’re saying there… The angle of the airstrike is 90 degrees from the line of sight from you to the smoke at the time the planes come in (about 3-5 secs after throw.)
if ur ballsy enough to risk jumping on one in the first place u deserve it :> just jump then /kill.
