Disabling vote kicking - For the love of God, WHY?

(Steltek) #1

This is probably the most stupid thing I have ever seen for server settings. Everytime I mistakenly wander into one these shitholes, there are always doorblockers, team-damagers (anyone got a good derogative yet clear name for these fools yet?), and griefers who love running over mines and sniffing pretty smoke.

So, I just want to know, from all the server admins here, why would you want to disable voting? It makes no sense. It just opens up your server for every kind of lame moron who wants to ruin everyone’s fun.

I call them fucktards.

As for vote disabled servers, or servers with the threshold set too high, I just don’t play on them. There are plenty of decent servers out there, no point wasting your time with morons.

(Borsuk) #3

Hmm. Indeed, such servers seem jackass magnets.

(BlackDeath) #4

I call them fucktards.

I prefer shitfuckers, but real name is “bleeders”. They commit the atrocity of “bleeding”, or shooting you down to about 10 health before you leave spawn. Then if you kill them, they file.

I don’t disable votekicks on my server, but I’ve witnessed enough reasons why someone probably would.

I’ve had evenings where some idiot will call a vote on anyone that kills them (particularly if it’s a “panzer whore” or some other “cheap kill” weapon).

Or a person (generally someone that thinks they’re very good) gets TKed one time (almost always by accident) and immediately calls a vote on the offender, telling everyone they’re a “stupid TKer” and “just hit F1”.

Finally, I’ve seen two people simply get into a pissing match (not for anything that happened in the game), and continually call votekicks against the other.

If I’m on the server and actively watching things, I usually end up kicking the person calling the votes instead. I can’t imagine what goes on when I’m not there, though…

The problem with the vote system is that the plaintiff gets to be the DA, the prosecutor, and a jurist. However, there’s just no better way to do it, other than running an actively-adminned server where there’s a ref on at all times. Personally, I find that very difficult to do.

Generally, people are better than what I’ve described above. It is, of course, the n00bs that tend to abuse the vote system. Actually, it’s blithering idiots that tend to abuse it, where n00bs is a subset thereof.

I do have an idea for a fix: make vote_limit per-client instead of global. Right now you have two options as a server admin:

[ol]
[li]Set vote_limit low, and let the idiots suck the pool dry so you can’t votekick someone when you really need to.
[/li][li]Set vote_limit high, and let the idiots call votes ad infinitum, to the annoyance of all.
[/li][/ol]

Making the limit per-client would fix both issues.

Another nice one would be a ref command to prevent a person from calling votes. I’ve muted idiots before, only to watch them continually call votes to unmute themselves.

Is it possible for an admin of Splashdamage to disable someone’s Serial code for ET ?
I know its a free game but i guess each game has its own unique serial (ive seen serial messages in het game but didnt read what they said)

Then if a SD admin sees a real lamer he can ban his serial code

“Youve been kicked by a Splashdamage administrator <reason> Killing teammates after being warned”
“your serial code has been disabled, pls download ET again and behave in the future”

Wishfull thinking ?

(Chairman Kaga) #7

ET has no serial code or cdkey, to the dismay of many a server admin.

What you’re seeing is the PunkBuster GUID. Normally, this is created by applying a one-way hash algorithm to the cdkey. But in ET, which lacks a cdkey in ET to base it off of, the GUID is auto-generated based off a number of system variables instead. It’s painfully easy to generate a new GUID for yourself, without even having to reinstall (IIRC, it’s as simple as deleting a certain file, although I can’t recall which one). This, of course, sucks, because it makes bans and such completely ineffective against any lamer with their recommended daily allowance of clue.

I’d love to see them put “cdkeys” back into the game, then do some sort of online registration that sends a cdkey to a verifiable e-mail address. The game is still free, but at least there is some semblance of attaching a key to an individual person. Yes, I realize there are ways around such a system (free e-mail accounts and all) but it’s a vast improvement over what exists at the moment, which is effectively no method of ostracizing lamers at all.

I agree with the comments by Chairman Kaga. I too have not disabled vote kicks but have come close many times because of the idiots abusing the voting system. I have though limited the ability to call votes to one per person. I was sick and tired of the non stop votes being called by idiots even when I was playing that something had to be done. Fortunately, I have the shrubmod to help police the servers (auto kick for tk damage) for tkers.

([FD-NL]imurderu) #9

I Think we agree on chairman Kaga’s comment then, but can/will SD do anything about this issue ?

Ive seen sad things going on like : Ive been playing for hours at a specific server and i was number 1 all through the campaigns, but then some noob came on Battery and TK me for opening the back door, then he immediately tryed to vote me off ! I mean ok, when noobs open the back door it results in disaster, but some players actually know what their doing. -like me trying to get hold of the command post wich is FAR more easy to defend and besides gives ur team the advantage of having it- but TK-ing a fellow player for a tactical move is not the solution.

The shocking thing was that they allmost voted me off, while im a gentleman warrior and allmost in every game got the objectives, but noobs dont know what their voting for… one of the sad story’s i daily face…

(DG) #10

kickvote is abused more than it is used.

there is an alternative, use pb_power or just getting an admin from IRC. the bonus of this system is the morons dont like to use them and the noobs just dont know about it  if someone is doorblocking just tk them out of the way, /reconnect when your complaints get high. against the determined twat votes do nothing useful.

(-ScOuT--{A}--) #11

I guess im one of those “idiots admins” that disable voting. My server has no problems with tkers, door blockers, or “bleeders”. I have about 20 power players that do my bidding to keep the server clean, it is very simple. They have the ability to kick and mute ppl, thats it. It is a perfect set up that seams to work since my server is almost allways full. Just because you have had the unpleasent curse of gracing poorly run servers, does not mean that all disabled voting servers are bad.

(Chairman Kaga) #12

Indeed. Votes aren’t necessary on a well-policed server. Unfortunately it takes time to find enough regular players that can handle the responsibility in order to keep the server well covered at all times. Votes are my stopgap measure in the meantime

Oddly enough, as I was writing this post I got to witness a blatant votekick abuse. A fairly seasoned player (who I had been watching all night) delivers one accidental TK to someone who just joined, and winds up getting booted. I think I’m going to start turning off votes when I’m actually watching the server.

(Crash) #13

Chairman Kaga, you look like a very fair admin. Can you give me your servers IP ? I`d really like to try your server.

(Crash) #14

Woopz, didn`t saw your signature :banghead: I guess i should start to read those things more often… :bored:

(Migraine) #15

I once joined a server, and got vote kicked before i even managed to select a team.
Fool didnt realise I was the admin. I think his ass stll hurts

anyway. ahem. yes, vote kicking is the most abused for of voting ive seen :frowning:

I still have it enabled by default, but i disable it as soon as I, or any of my co-admins enter a server, so we can police it ourselves…

(SCDS_reyalP) #16

On servers with really active admins, it is OK to have vote kicking turned off. Otherwise, I would rather have it on.

Giving pb_power to your trusted regulars is also a good idea.

Limiting the votes a player can call is good. Any vote that didn’t pass the first 3 times, probably isn’t going to.
