Now this is interesting. Purchasable skins for each faction and I’m all set.
DIRTY BOMB's mercs vs EVOLVE's hunters
yup sounds great.
I love the faction descriptions: ‘more time’ and ‘right 2 b right’
You guys talking gun skins or merc skins?
Any Skins in a fast paced FPS are going to be useless because people are going to try and squeeze every ounce of Frames Per Second out of their computer.

The hardcore comp might, but the public crowd will love skins. I would be surprised if hardcore comp constituted more than 10%> of the playerbase. (pulling numbers out of a :stroggtapir: )

just kidding
but seriously, I’m not “people” and many others that will be going to play this game won’t go FPS hunting either. Aside from that, I have pretty much everything turned off, except for dynamic shadows and maybe 2-3 other options in the graphics menu; but the game still looks pretty good and I can surely recognize the weapons I’m carrying.(And yes, I know, I could go inside some config files and tweak this game even more thorough, than in the menu, but I’m sure only a extreme minority will go so far) Aside from that, it’s the idea of what gun you are wielding, that is more important than its actual ingame look. With other words; back in the early 2000nds people already loved their weapon mods, even though they weren’t much more, than textured logs, that could be an AK-47, or a M4. If your merc and his loadout looks cool in the selection screen then SD has already managed to achieve 50% of the ingame immersion.
PS: When I started this thread I was mostly talking about the weapon skins, since the mercs look already pretty cool; they are definitely not your average MARPAT sporting, M4 wielding, EO-Tech using, gung-ho gibberish screaming 'mericans, from the latest Call of Battlefield* Yet their weapons aren’t really that exiting looking, even though they are obviously the most recent versions of the AK, the Car-15, the MP5, the Desert Eagle and whatnot. I just wanted something entirely different for DB and when I saw the EVOLVE characters I just had to start this thread here, because I just love their overall designs(characters and weapons alike).
*to be fair, the actual last CoD wasn’t that terribly looking(sci-fi = always +1 for me), but I just didn’t wanted to dabble in the CoD universe; too many other games to play.
Good Point
But I will raise you public vs Comp player and the difference in computer.
A public player might have a minimal spec computer but yet want to show off their skins at 40 fps and quit the game due to “lag”
Sorry I do not have more time to make my point but can you see where I am trying to go?
[QUOTE=Fluffy_gIMp;520494]Fear not Frost we’ll get there, as has been mentioned there are lots of different directions to go in for future content.
For those that are interested in the back-stories, (the non-game-content-producing-types) have spent some time looking at the respective cooperation’s in the game and linking them to weapons manufacture. So the style and utility of gun is reflected in how it looks and plays…

Ok, wow, that’s just awesome  I’ll immediately copy this text and print it out on a sheet of paper. I really hope, that the weapons and gadgets from each manufacturer are clearly distinguishable from one another(visually and functionally). They should really contrast and, at the same time, compliment each other; conventional vs super advanced, raw power vs high precision, extremely lethal vs non-lethal, drone strike vs Katana. And don’t forget to make them look absolutely badass
me want bang stick, shoot spooky, black is fine
really, are gun skins going to matter to anyone?
The game is F2P so it needs stuff to sell, in game.

These don’t sound as interesting as they could be because they don’t sound like they are actual competitors.
I think it’s more interesting when you have weapons of the same class that are differentiated both in stats and visuals like the AK variants versus the US/NATO ARs, MGs, and SMGs. Generally, you will know if you’re using a NATO or a USSR weapon in FPS games both via visual design and stats/handling.

Uhm ya, obviously, lol. I’m not trolling when I’m writting my butt off in this forum. Can’t be too hard to accept, that different people are into something for different reasons. If Brink would’ve played exactly like it did, but would’ve looked like just another generic modern military shooter, I would’ve never touched it, just because I was already happy with the fps games I was already playing. If people are supposed to just be in for the gameplay of a game I don’t understand why there are so many weapon skins out there for any game, that can be modded. But then again, there are people that love comics, but couldn’t give less of a crap about the interior art, because they are a 110% in for the story. I could never understand those guys, but they exist and I accept that, just like I accept, that peeps still play CS 1.6 with its terrible graphics and they would even turn everything in a game off, that says “graphics option”(even stuff directly in the config file; in order to squeeze yet another 2 1/2 frames more out of the game).
I don’t get why demands for background story and visual variety is so often regarded as redundant shenanigans in this forum. Does it really hurt so bad to have a little bit of candy in a game? I’m pretty sure SD is big enough to handle the gameplay and the candy.

I think this is an advantage. It would require a seriously treated background to explain conflicts of corporations over objectives in-game. While it could make sense for corporations to compete directly (who can get samples faster), it would be very strange for mercenaries to defend something in the ‘dirty zone’. Why bother stopping the other’s team EV?
Not too serious attitude regarding the plot will help the game. Players will fill in the gaps themselves, provided the plot that is here, is colorful, easy to grasp and funny. Who cares why the ‘big pharma’ fights the ‘radical nationalists’ , let them have at it, and may the best one win
Background & Context >> Plot
E.G. starcraft I : few awesome cutscenes, animated faces, some random voice over and game reeks flavor.
They’re protecting their employer’s corporate assets from a competitor?
My point, however, was that it seemed like Concept Corporation X is making assault rifles while Concept Corporation Y is making explosives so you don’t have the high damage, high recoil, wooden stock/grip USSR assault rifle versus the low damage, low recoil, high RoF, metal/synthetic of the NATO assault rifle since all the assault rifles are made by CCX.

I mean, unless you’re TF2
Regards Merc variety ‘evolve’ is a good word to have in the thread title, because that has always been and still is the goal. We started with Mercs that are somewhat grounded and relate-able for players of most modern FPS games but we definitely want to introduce new Mercs in future that go in more interesting directions and evolve the game.
Mercs like Phantom and Sparks were the first step towards this but as Frost pointed out there are plenty of other ideas we can also pursue.
It makes sense that you’re sticking to basic mercs in order to get the gunplay right. Adding lots of specialists to the mix would introduce a lot of extra variables that could skew the statistics.
Though well, just like with any class-based game, any time you introduce new additions the whole range of mercs will need to be tuned again as well.
A certain amount of asymmetry in regards of the mercs could even go so far, that one set of mercs can’t directly kill the opponents; instead either merc would either be extremely powerful in terms of blocking routes, blasting down opponents, be hella fast, interrupting the enemy’s objective game, or making himself invisible(etc.), while the opponents play with traditional kill weapons. Just imagine how funny that’d be to watch, or to look at the stats at the end of a match and see, that the winning faction has not a single kill at all(maybe 1~2 because someone knocked some enemy players off of something). That’d be like constantly teabaggin the enemy
Edit: Just kidding a bit, but it’d be interesting if something like that could actually work. Does anybody know a game, that works kinda like that? It’d probably be more realistic to have only non-lethal abilities, a main weapon, that is non-lethal and a lethal side-weapon, like the Deagle, or a SMG; but the non-lethal weapon/abilities should be powerful enough to be the more attractive choice for the player in most cases.
