DIRTY BOMB's mercs vs EVOLVE's hunters

(.FROST.) #1

Call me crazy, but there are some huge similarities in terms of the character designs in both games, but EVOLVE’s cast is obviously a bit more futuristic; mostly in terms of their weaponary.

To say it out loud(which I’ve already done before); the character designs in DB are absolutely fantastic, but still too much grounded in reality(imo), whereas EVOLVE’s characters look almost exactly, like I would’ve wished them for DB. I understand, that EVOLVE’s weaponary could in no way(?) fit into the whole storyframe of DB, but it wouldn’t be too crazy to go at least half way in the direction of EVOLVE*. DB’s characters themselves are mostly futuristic enough imo, even though some could still use some sci-fi touches here and there; but what I’m really missing is more advanced and designed weaponary. I mean there are already real-life weapons out there, that look far more advanced than any of the DB guns, rifles and SMGs.

*the heal gun is already way futuristic, I don’t think we’ll have those, or healing stations by 2020. So why stay so conservative with all the kill-weapons?

I love the abilities in Evolve and lots of them are transferable to DB.

There you go, we are officially best friends forever now

PS: I haven’t taken a thorough look into the abilities of the hunters(as of yet), but I think the merc cards already sport some of them. The thread was more about the weapon skins(at first), but I think DB could really take some inspiration from EVOLVE in general. I on the other hand aren’t too much into EVOLVE’s gamplay. It’s too asymmetrical for my taste, but I’ll surely watch plenty of matches when it comes out; maybe that’ll change my mind and I’ll get me copy, we’ll see. It surely is my favorite MP game atm, just from it’s looks.

Indeed, would love to see more variety in the weaponry. I think the medic with the pewpew gun (can’t remember her name…) was a step in the right direction and certainly something I’d like to see more of. Even though hur, then, current implementation was slightly overpowered. A few that have been on my mind lately:

Gas grenade
Give this to a medic, heals your own team, hurts the enemy team. More or less like the molotov but with gas.

Crossbow
Pretty much a copy from HL1/2. Shoots a uranium/plutonium kind of bolt at high velocity which can be intentionally ricocheted on angled surfaces. If fired over a long enough distance the target might be set on fire for X seconds (kind of like in Painkiler where the stake starts to burn after a while).

Hexagon grenade (Football (soccer ball for you yanks))
AOE style of grenade, think of each hexagon as a small charge. A more “realistic” style of the fractal grenade found in Tribes: Ascend.

Melee glove
The glove/“impact gun” from Inglorious Bastards movie. Fun addition to the melee arsenal.

Hellboy revolver

  • No idea how it works I just think it’s pretty badass

Those are probably the ones I’ve had in mind that would actually work in the “DB Universe”, the rest would probably be way too futuristic. Since DB is kinda set in London it would probably be cool to have a new modern twist on the Sten gun as well.

Speaking of new stuff, whatever happened to the Engineer with the wall thing? Any chance we get that one soon?

The hunters have the best abilities for a game like DB. Harpoon traps are awesome. Lots of nasty tricks to lay down ambushes.

Many opinions were voiced that DB mercs are too sci-fi and too unrealistic.

Sounds to me like you are missing QW : )

I don’t know who said that, but it couldn’t have been many. As to QW; I’ve never played that game, even though I’m sure I would’ve loved it. It just went by unnoticed from me; don’t know how, or why, but it wasn’t until Brink and when I joined this forum, that I’ve learned about that game. But then it was already old and I was totally into Brink; and that was it.

PS: I don’t see where a Desert Eagle, an MP5K, a basic shotgun, a more, or less regular grenade revolver, etc. can be too futuristic. Almost every kill-weapon in DB has a real-life counter-part and the differences are mostly pretty minor. Even weapons you might think are designed from SD and are quite futuristic are actually RL weapons you just don’t know.

Though what could be regarded as futuristic are mostly the abilities and the look of a couple mercs, as well as some stuff and interactables on the maps.

If Phoenix is possible in DB then so is every Evolve ability. Besides, currently it’s the bloated HUD, health bars and red hued enemies that destroy the immersion.

(Alchemy) #11

the movement in evolve was boring and more of a chore to get around the map. Felt like I was running in mud, the air control felt soupy, turned me off immediately. The spells were ok, but nothing really ground breaking, I liked some of the different projectile weapons. But overall I didn’t liked the 2 beta weekends I played. If I had to put it into to one word why I didn’t take to it… Console.

(tokamak) #12

That was just the trade-off of having such vertically inclined maps.

(Alchemy) #13

You have never played tribes or quake have you?

(Senethro) #14

I’m not sure invoking the names of old dead games means very much anymore.

(tokamak) #15

Neither styles would be appropriate in the canyon arenas of Evolve. Besides, there aren’t any canyons in London so the need for jetpacks is largely mitigated anyway so I’m not sure why the mobility system in Evolve was brought up in the first place as we were talking about the character abilities.

(Alchemy) #16

The title says mercs vs hunters, and I pointed out what I like or didn’t like about abilities, weapons, and movement of evolve. I’m not saying that you have to copy paste the movement of quake or tribes into that game.

My point bringing up quake and tribes is that you said “That was just the trade-off of having such vertically inclined maps” , and that’s just a wrong statement. Tribes and quake maps were made with vertically in mind and the “running in mud” “soupy air control” feeling that I pointed out were not "trade-off"s in those games, as an example.

(tokamak) #17

Fair enough. I was worried for a second that you were suggesting to start installing elevators and jump-pads throughout the Evolve planet.

(.FROST.) #18

And I was mainly talking about DB’s and EVOLVE’s visual similarities and differences, and what I wish SD would’ve done with DB; its weapon skins in particular. But since this is not really open for debate one can only cope with it. Or putting it differently; if DB’s mercs would have the weaponary of the EVOLVE cast, then I’d really love it. So it’s still just the next best thing to BRINK for me. I mean SD has obviously a clear vision of DB’s look and it’s more than well transfered into the game and the mercs; its just not exactly what I’d need to totally fall in love with this game. Though I like the gameplay and have no real interest in any other MP shooter out there, so I’ll stuck to it.

What I also like more in EVOLVE than in DB is the atmosphere. DB is either lit with bright daylight, or with a multitude of artificial light sources(WC). I love night maps(or just quite dark maps) and when they are lit in the most atmospheric way possible. WC has so many spot-lights, it really kills the atmosphere. Are there even areas with real shadows? I actually don’t think so.

Earlier today me and some friends won the Evolve ESL Cup and having played all the Hunters now for quite a while I do have to say I feel they are much better fleshed out then we see in Dirty Bomb. Even simple little things like the talking to each other during battle or at the start of a match seems to add so much depth. When it comes to their abilities, its pretty much the same as Dirty Bomb as each Hunter has 1 roll ability, 1 crazy ability and 2 weapons. However due to the weapons not being shared they feel much more unique then we have here. Honestly there are very few abilities that would work in Dirty Bomb that have not already been used.

(.FROST.) #20

That’s actually one of those things I just don’t get in DB. Why have the devs chosen to use real-life weapons that are shared among all mercs to a certain extend, when the whole point of DB was to have unique mercs? And why do they have to look so “realistic”? Granted, they look great for what they are(the artists did an awesome job there), but also kinda uninteresting at the same time; I mean we’ve seen those in dozends and dozends of FPS games already, there was really no need for more of those; even if the selection is actually a bit cooler than in most FPS games.

Just why SD? The mercs themselves look so cool, but they have to run around with this slightly lame weaponary. It’s especially sad to look at EVOLVE now and see, how it could’ve been.

Why am I even writting this? It’s all set and done already :’(
