Dirty Bomb is getting Private Test Servers

(Sinee) #41
guys some points to bring up:

 • revealing what the tests are about would spoil the new content - how can devs test new content in the PTS without giving away what the new content is?
 • revealing what the tests are would cause major amounts of armchair-whine. Remember the days when patch notes were released prior to the patch? huge amounts of whine and flamewars about stuff people didn’t even had a hands on
 • as far as i know playtime alone is hardly a factor, dont think postcount is either. I am no authority here, but my impression is that SD picked first and foremost from people they knew: longtime&active fans of SD games, VIP members & founders and key community figures.
 • this is not for fun: its not so that the ‘elitist group’ can test all the cool jazz before its out there. Its for testing purposes: hunting bugs and glitches in an organized manner is very different from just playing it out, like say the new map weekends we had some time back
 • im pretty sure the only reason this is mentioned is so that people wouldnt think its done behind everyone’s back
 • consider the benefits: new patches are more likely to have less new bugs, new content is likely going to be a lot more polished too.
I’m just used to H1Z1 where when you download the game, it automatically includes the test server in your Steam library and anyone can go on it and test the next build, see the upcoming features, and provide feedback before it’s released.

And it’s shockingly not some big special snowflake deal that people know what’s coming up in the future. There’s no legal contractual agreement drama. I highly doubt anyone gives a fuck that they might give Phantom laser vision or whatever’s coming up. It’s not special enough to be kept a secret, but no big deal. I don’t think anyone’s going to like the “cool kids only” approach.

SD always has good ideas, things that are a step in the right direction, but just like the flagrant RNG, there’s a good concept…good product. But then they need to shit on it. Very “I love spaghetti but it’s got shit on it.”

(Black) #42

Are you really trying to argue this?
Leaks will happen regardless. SD can choose whoever they want or “trust”, information is still going to be leaked by them whether it be on a minuscule or mass scale.

There are no “secrets” in anything you allow the public to test.
I’ve been playing for over 800 hours have 397 forum posts and I’m just as likely to leak information as a player who has only played one match and has no forum posts.

Of course, the testers are under an NDA, so they will be the only ones to know the information/content, unless of course somebody leaks it.

(Draco) #44

this looks cool, i hope i can be part of some of this  but probably not due region location (South america, and the servers here have more ping than US servers)

anyways, thanks for the info and good luck to the testers

(Occult) #45

ohh nice, just sucks you gotta be cream of the crop to get in. allwell its progress i guess

edit: if you have to say gimme gimme to get in, you shouldn’t get in.
don’t beg, your knees are getting dirty.

(IcySkyz) #46

Don’t really care who tests, I trust the Nexon team on who they picked. I hope this will reduce the number of bugs in the long run and that those who are testers are candid and bold on their feedback to the team.

(Amerika) #47

Some of you need to calm down. It’s only a test server. It’s not an f’ing status symbol so cool it with the indignation and the entitlement. Depending on how things go it could get expanded. Or it could get canned. It’s a test server that is going to get a test run and then things will move on from there. So cool off and try not to worry about it.

There are people who are on your side. I know I would like to see the server move to a more open format but there are good reasons why it’s being rolled out slowly.

(watsyurdeal) #48

You guys are making way too big of a deal out of this. It’s not like they’re accessing anything exclusive, just testing content.

Beta and Alpha testing is not that big of a deal, it wouldn’t be my first time.

([WAR]Larknok1) #49

WAR’s team captain, Larknok1 here. If not me, consider inviting people from the competitive scene. Competitive players not only understand which characters are good, but usually understand when it is a good thing for a character to be good – and in what situations.

(N8o) #50

Agreed. Take from the pool of competitive teams that are left, whoever that may be.

(SteelMailbox) #51

Great, when I am off the forums and just finally play other games SD is sending invites to active community members. what a shit luck.

I remember suggesting it a while ago
http://forums.dirtybomb.nexon.net/discussion/23822/for-this-game-to-succeed#latest
Not sure if I was the 1st one but whatever my opinion still stands about this subject.
I also think that instead of taking popular community members you should also take people with a sort of different opinion than others, Oh and competitive players.

Yes, of course… and we thank you snobs for increased spawn timer on 8v8 servers.
Thank you very much.

(Matuno) #53

Take it easy guys, be glad you’re missing out. It’s not a privilege, but a burden. Nothing you do on the test server carries over to live. Worst case scenario (I’ve done this), you have to perform a list of tasks in which you have to interact with every prop, every ability, every corner of the map, everything you can imagine, because you never know what happens when you reduce Thunder’s hitbox by 2%.

QA sucks, man.

 • revealing what the tests are about would spoil the new content - how can devs test new content in the PTS without giving away what the new content is?
That’s not really a bad thing. The Max thing proves SD can do some decent trolling, but there’s not much beyond that and shoe making vague comments.
• revealing what the tests are would cause major amounts of armchair-whine. Remember the days when patch notes were released prior to the patch? huge amounts of whine and flamewars about stuff people didn’t even had a hands on
And now we have people flaming about stuff they just read, have barely touched, or have legitimate reason to yell about it. It’s not all that different, people are going to complain no matter what happens (though, releasing patch notes a week after the actual patch would probably be really interesting). Sure, perhaps some ideas may be missed by the community, but that is hardly much better than holding people in the dark about changes until they have no choice but to deal with them.
• consider the benefits: new patches are more likely to have less new bugs, new content is likely going to be a lot more polished too.
Consider the benefit of having the exact same thing with transparency.

The real benefit of a private venture is a smaller opinion pool and a (possibly) more concrete role for the testers to do specific things besides the usual. This can be achieved with mods or some other group gathering lists out of the myriad opinions. We already can bug test with empty servers, you don’t necessarily need to make a whole beta within beta to make that happen.

It’s not necessarily wrong for them to do this, and is better than nothing, but transparency is a progressive stance that people appreciate.

(Szakalot) #55

@Black surely you can understand why SD would rather have as little and as small leaks as possible? and again, its not about hours, its not about playtime.

none of you missed some application deadline, i recall talks about PTS over a year ago: now SD invited a small group of people to see how its gonna work out, hell - maybe they will scratch out the whole idea if it doesntt

do you get equally upset when you dont get invited backstage after a concert - but musicians friend n family are? SD choose some people in an arbitrary matter, why not respect their decision

(Rewolf) #56

They already said they are in the process of setting up PUBLIC test servers, so this is just the beginning.

(god1) #57

It’s just funny how some of the most influential players in terms of bug testing etc. aren’t in it.

(LifeupOmega) #58

(TheNekoMia) #59

Right so a closed beta inside a open beta? makes sense, but hey no phantom releases would be nice

Making it private has awful poor sense in my opinion. Especially when you try bring/retain people on your game. They could have just created a beta build option in steam so anyone could join a test server.
And what is the plan ? Just to grab the opinion of the lucky ones who got their hands on the test ? You are guaranteed to go straight into the walls with this strategy. The larger your sample is, the closer the feedback will be from the true opinion of the community.
I’ve seen numerous games doing public beta patches, which were very far from the actual content coming out of it. Chivalry, Dota 2, cs:go just to name a few. And the beta patch results went from people of goodwill not just lucky basterds.

I’m actually staggered that founders do not automatically get their entry for this kind of thing. So does anyone that have put some money in this game. We’re supporting the game. I don’t mind the goddamn obsidian card, I’d vastly prefer to participate to that kind of things.
