DirectX 10 support?

(corvey) #1

Doubtful but I thought I’d ask, will ET-QW be making any use of DX10 for the new up and coming video cards?

(Nail) #2

as Direct x10 hasn’t been released yet and only works with Win Vista, I highly doubt it, I think qw is opengl anyways

(Black_Forky) #3

The Doom3 engine is OpenGL and that is what QW is based off. So no you shouldn’t buy an 800 $ DX10 card for this game.

(SCDS_reyalP) #4

There will no doubt be opengl extensions that support the same graphics feature set as DX10.

(SniperSteve) #5

DX10 will support DX9. So you can still spend your money and play ET:QW. For me, I’m waiting a while to buy mine

I think what you meant to say was a DX10 card will support DX9.

A DX10 game will not play on DX9 equipment if it has shader model 4.0.

(mortis) #7

I’m sure DirectX 10 will have no bugs and perfect compatibility. Wait, it’s a Windows technology. So it will be buggy as hell, then 10.2 or 10.3 will be reasonably stable, but all development will be stopped to develop DirectX 11, and then DirectX12, and so on, just like we need a ‘new’ Windows full of ‘innovations’. XP Pro works fine now, I see no reason to upgrade. I get very tired of the planned obsolescence of most software.

(jjpron) #8

But if Halo2 and Halo3 on the PC require Vista, doesn’t that mean that QW will somehow suffer?

I’m a Mac user, so remembering how Bungie used to make Mac-only games, and are now nothing but Microsoft’s bitch, I’d like to thank id and SD for staying true to the art.

(corvey) #9

Don’t forget with directx 11 and 12 you will also have to upgrade OS too, Vista 2.0, and Vista 3.0 at $299 EACH respectively to obtain a new version of DirectX just to play your new $50 GAME… As if $1500 dollars worth of hardware isn’t enough to even play a game, lets just give another 299 dollars to Bill Gates so we can play it, ok? I’m should he could use an extra 299 dollars chump change in his pocket, yeah right… FUCK YOU BILL GATES

It is VERY lame to have to buy a new OS just for a directx upgrade. This really shows how greedy the MS giant really is, and they know they have gamers BY THE BALLS.

XP is perfectly fine for my directx windows based games. Linux for all other server needs… That’s right Bill, “Linux”

Not just a new OS but also a new DX10 specific video card, as shader model 4.0 can’t be made retro compatible with DX9 cards.

Then again, throw High Def Video into the mix and you’re looking for a new monitor as well.

BTW in a recent magazine I receive, they tested Vista as a performance OS (read gaming OS as most of us demand performance). Vista scales so will work on any system that meets the minimum spec, but to get max performance they found you needed a Dual Core CPU, lots of memory - read 4GB + memory for games like BF2 (Vista’s prefetch can use up to 2GB on its own), a fast SATA HD with NCQ and min 8MB buffer. Also when EFI is finally added (no longer in on release), you’ll need a new EFI motherboard.

I’m sure I saw my local computer store owner booking an exotic holiday…

(Hakuryu) #11

Personally I’m not that impressed with Vista. Sure DX 10 is nice, but most of the enhancements are just fluff and take up a huge amount of resources.

Preview windows upon mouse over of taskbar windows and in the alt-tab list for instance. Do you really need to see images of windows you have open while alt-tabbing? All these bells and whistles do nothing for me, but they definately increase the needed hardware.

I love some of the reasoning they use too. We want to make it easy for people to play games… imagine just inserting a DVD and being able to play… wtf do you think I do now? Oh wait, I have to hit next a few times and specify a directory when installing something. MS got rid of that? Thank god because those 2 minutes were really making me wish I use Linux (sarcasm).

(Mordenkainen) #12

Right now, it’s a bit hard to put in support for something of which you have no hardware capable of.

(Lanz) #13

Windows Vista is the OS I’m the least impressed by of all the ones I’ve used, and I’ve been using PCs since DOS 3.0.

It’s a resource hog that doesn’t bring me anything I miss today, I’m actually quite satisfied with XP and see no reason to change until I absolutely have to.

(Shackahn) #14

Why use an OS that hogs system resources? I want my OS to consume as little meory bandwidth and cpu usage as possible when playing, as most gamers would. Given that gaming in such a large market with major enthusiast spending large amounts of money on a regular basis you would have thought microsoft might have given us some though.

Then again Mr Gates does rule the planet…

(Joe999) #15

vista is only here to increase pc sales again and to introduce piss off copy protection and to limit the users in what they can do on their own system. i don’t need it.

btw: M$ is starting to sell their antivirus/antispyware/firewall software this week. does anyone have a reasonable argument why you should pay for a fix of a flaw in the OS? <= this is the first time i’ve heard that you have to pay for patches.

(Nail) #16

so if you buy a comp, have catastrophic failure, you’ll need to buy a new copy of Vista/XP

(Hakuryu) #17

You dont even have to get a big failure.

OEM registers with information about your hardware, but I havent seen anyone who knows for sure which parts are tied to the OEM copy. I would imagine only the mobo and cpu, but knowing MS if you change your gamepad it probably voids the OEM license.

It’s only around $100 more for a retail version of XP, which is a good investment now if you plan on using it on multiple computers.

Microsoft doesnt even state clearly how the OEM version is tied to one computer… they are probably hoping alot of new comp builders will have to buy an OS two times or more. Otherwise why even let resellers sell OEM copies?

(Rhoades) #18

I wonder if someone will make Halo 2 for the PC XP compatible.

(Isabel Lucas) #19

The only game I know of thats DX10 is EA’s Crysis.

Now whether or not they’ll release 2 versions, 1 for DX9 and one for DX10, I don’t know.

I just know that after my recent EA experiences, I won’t be buying it.
