[drupal=311]Dev Studios Are Better Off Being Independent[/drupal]

One of Splash Damage’s guiding principles is independence and we’re often asked why this is so, or why people should come work for us rather than choose a seemingly more secure position at a publisher-owned studio. Our development manager Stephen ‘malarky’ Gaffney sheds some light on this issue in this freshly typed column on Edge Magazine’s website, where he explains that being independent often results in better games for gamers, and that it is in fact more secure for employees.
All this and weekly recipes, fashion tips, and tv listings, all in… I’m sorry, I’m reading something else. But malarky’s thing is right over here.

as you are independent, i’m wondering where the money comes from which you pay to your workers. also, does it influence the game development cycle? i mean, you can’t pay your workers forever without having sold something.

“corporate life – huge teams, deadline pressure and corporate mentality” i don’t see why SD doesn’t have this. you have a huge team now, and i doubt working at SD is job-safe. you might not close down, but eventually you’ll have to get rid of some people. so “have all been shut down” is just cosmetics imo. regarding deadline pressure see what i wrote first. the only thing i understand is the corporate mentality.

i’m not in your business, so those interviews and essays are a tad hard to understand for me. but i have to admit that after having read the comments about tiberium cancellation here, it gave me a new perspective about independent and corporate life:

well, at least about corporate life
