Demo-playback and Ping

When I view my demos it seems like I’m landing shots when I should miss to the left/right. I suppose this depends on having ping=0 when viewing and ping=50(mostly) when playing. Is that the only thing affecting what I see during playback? I mean, does for instance the ping of the opponents somehow enter the equation?
Can I simulate having ping 50 during playback with cl_timenudge? Should it be cl_timenudge= +50 or -50 ?

i gather demo’s can be off quite a bit for quite a few things. they just save basic info and replay the game based on that, it’s not like a perfect copy like a video would be for example. at a guess one thing is the prediction happening at the time isnt recorded, and on demo playback ‘repredicted’ or there’s no prediction at all or whatever.

i recently joined a server in australia (i’m in the states) just for my own curiosity. my ping was ~350 the whole time. i still managed to do reasonably well thanks to etpro antilag, but it was obviously not optimal, and i found it rather unpleasant to play like that.

when i went back to watch the demo, however, my crosshair was quite noticeably trailing behind my targets, yet my shots were landing. obviously due to the fact that the antilag was doing it’s job while i way playing, but the demo captured “reality” and it’s quite amusing to watch.

so yeah, demos can look to be way off depending how bad your ping was.
