Agree I would have preferred on by default and then people can turn it off. I’m grateful for that fireteam guide you actually run into people using it now and having proper volume settings. Actually had a group of 6 randoms in a fireteam the other night and heard people using pulbic voip as well.
DEFAULT voip/chat settings Killed the hype
The more I play in fireteams and get people to use their mic the more I notice how much these atrocious decisions hurt pub play in the first few weeks. I’m not going go to into a long rant about it but this is probably the only thing I’m going to blame squarely on SD and not BETH at all.
I don’t see how that decision couldn’t have been made by SD. Also, not only did we not get instant end of map chat from day one, they completely remove chatting at end of round in a patch… W T F, seriously WTF?? That has been pissing me off to no end.
I would LOVE to hear the reasoning behind no default team VOIP (at 0 dbs plz), and totally removing chat at end of round. That makes no fing sense, specially coming from SD… I want to punch a tapir in its f************ing left eye.
/rant
You’re 100% spot on. The reason it was off by default was because the terrorists won. Seriously, a$$hats on consoles calling people names (the terrorists) made SD turn off voip by default so people who have never gone online before wouldn’t just disconnect the moment someone hurt their feelings.
We saw it coming. We made noise. We said if it’s off by default there won’t be a reason for people to turn it on because no one will be on to talk to anyway, so leaving it off by default will kill it. We said just make it real easy to mute someone instead. We said, OK, consoles are apaprentl’y full of duchebags, at least make it on by default for PC.
It’s a tribute to the lowest common denominator and why PC players get so pissed when someone takes away their dedicated servers. On consoles, you have to put up with it because you have no choice. On PC, those a$$hats are just banned from servers so it’s not a problem. But no, it’s off by default on PC as well.
Not only that, but there’s no volume control and the default volume setting is seriously screwed up.
No voip default, no end map menu chat, servers that fill with bots are just bad, maybe some of that stuff expplains the current 2300 active players.
Once again, you are posting on the dev’s forum. They are aware of the thread. There is no need to bump this.
Its kinda depressing how PC gaming is going backwards. On the voip subject, in recent memory - did no one at SD play TF2 which had a pretty decent system and if they did - did they look at it and go, ‘NO! This simple and functional system is completely not what we want! Voice adjustment menus? PAH! EAT MY CVARS AND NO WAY TO TEST IT AAAHAHAHAHAAH.’ Hell even BC2 had a way of yelling at people for stuff which is good given how their voip stuff was also terrible. Although BC2 was a console port. Which Brink isn’t. Right. RIGHT.
As a side point, was the voice stuff just as broke on the consoles?
Hi guy who doesn’t understand how changes get made. As the community, if we care about this problem, we will keep this issue on the front page until we either get a dev response or the issue is repaired.
At no point has SD publicly addressed the issue since the release of Brink. Awaiting their reply, and until then, like many others will continue to bring up this problem.
For the love of goodness give this game a breath of social air!
VoIP with a Visible indicator of who is talking and if it’s incoming global, team or fire team. The little speaker above the head we have now is awful and raises my blood pressure.
END OF MAP CHATS!!! The social disconnect raises my blood pressure.
Vsays!!! I’m nearing a need for prescription medicine…
Why is setting up a fire team such a chore and involving the jankiest vote prompt? Nnnnnnnnnggggg
And when you finish that please give us server operators a Motd to promote VoIP and a maybe for once a bit of a community angle?

I sound like a broken record here with certain issues but it’s better a group repeats itself to stress the topic until it’s fixed and to help set priorities for sd
D. So I’m with ya, and it sure beats an aimless hate thread.

chatting in console just doesn’t cut it as most don’t bother,
and what happened to obituaries in the console btw?,
-on an related example of basics that seem to be missing.
As one post stated, it DOES feel backwards
with so many options taken away and interfaces dumbed down.
Im buping this ftw, today in resort I was tryng to play as a medic giving adrenaline to a dude that was suposed to plant the bomb in the bridge, getting the timing for it with no mic is just fail.
Maybe when game drops to 1000 players they will start listening to the community lets see.
Cmon help out a medic will ya? I need ammo, and supplies recharging! Played ETQW last Tuesday and felt so empowered by a couple vsays. VoIP would make the game more social, but at least give us our vsay!
Thank you for that, person that has been on this forum less than a month and doesn’t talk regularly with SD Employees. I know this forum far better than you ever will. Stop assuming to know.
Oh mighty forum goer with insider knowledge, I beg of thee for your forgiveness!!
press tab + put a VoiP On/Off button next to each player’s name, and voila
Again I didnt buy the game yet, but I agree that no VoIP is a baaaaad decision, I usually dont use it that much because my accent is too sexeh for many, but damn it was refreshing to hear some nice ladies voices in the middle of the carnage.
Peace
Don’t, hes suggesting you put faith in the same awareness that let the game go out in the state it did. Keep bumping! ‘It’s the dev forum and they’re aware’, if they had any sense of awareness Refuel would have had sound - unless its been explained how that actually happened?
I thought that it was only on the servers i played on. Wow. Really…Wow! Who comes up with these idiotic decisions? The community is in poor condition as it is. Chat and VOIP should be on all the time! If people don’t like it, they can simply disable it in the options.
What the hell is wrong with this developer?
Better question might be what’s wrong with the majority of console gamers. Have you ever joined a console game that has public VOIP on by default? Racial slurs, women hate, gay bashing and, most importantly, 14 year old kids trying to act tough.
SD said over and over again in countless interviews that, due to this ass-hattery and how it is a turn-off for many newcomers trying to get into online gaming, they would turn VOIP off by default.
Was it the right decision? For the console? Hell yes. For the PC? Probably not. We “tend” to be a more mature crowd, but just barely. Still, it takes all of 5 seconds to set your keybind and modify your s_volume_VOIP* CVARS. The PC community is starting to get the word out to use it. VOIP also has a lemming effect… once one starts to use it, someone else usually chimes in.
Do your part and help spread the word.
