Dedicated Servers for Consoles?
Even games which only have listening servers could use a master server I guess, at least if they want to offer any kind of match making. Can’t do a broadcast to the Internet to discover who host the servers
to clarify this: i would start dancing right away like a banana if a server system like on pc would be possible for the 360. and of course it would be theoreticaly possible but will never happen, because m$ has no interesst in allowing this.
so what i try to propose are possible alternatives to p2p hosting. best thing would be obviously if spash or bethesda would host some servers for us to play the game. i do not know if they would actually be willing to do this as it is a pecuniary question. You need localized servers and maintance. thats not for free. if you don’t sell to many copies of the game, you will loose even more money.
it is possible to do a fairly good net code for p2p as its done in cod or halo but even if you actualy achieve this this still is not a optimal solution and only works if you actually have a lot of peoples playing the game (and these games are the most played games on the 360)
A lot of games failed in implementing a good p2p net code for the 360 like quake wars, wolfenstein, prey, etc. pp. These games became completly unplayabel on multiplayer whitch is particulary drastic, if the game is ment for online play (like quake wars).
and even if you got a very good net code and a big payer base the p2p hosting can be very frustrating. very often i clearly fired first on a opponed on cod and get fraged nontheless. watching the killcam it seems i didn’t fire a single shot. this is very frustrating and makes the game depend more on the conection quality then on skill.
I just read on ign some random stuff about a game called section 8. and than i stumbled over this:
“dedicated server support on PC and consoles (including the ability to download a dedicated server client for the console platforms),”
download a dedicated server client for the console platforms!
Well Homefront game will have dedicate servers. Both ones run by Kaos and player run. It’s possible and would be nice to see for Brink.
Valve has an option for “official” (dedicated) server or local hosted game when you start your lobby for L4D and L4D2. If Brink had that option it would be great.
When L4D2 first hit the Valve servers were hammered so bad they had to add more and the only way to get a reliable game for the first week or so was to local host them.
blog link showing they have dedicated servers for console:

Oh ok. And 8v8 max right?
Shouldn’t be that bad on P2P so long as the netcode is good.

8v8 is max, but they are supposed to have support for smaller matches, since most league and competition matches are like 6v6 max. They have host mitigation, so console should be fine.
I think it would be really cool if Brink would allow PC and 360 players to play together like in Shadowrun but have it optional.
However I don’t really mind consoles having p2p hosting, as long as there not a significant different between host and other players like in Gears of War.

If they handled it like Shoadowrun did, it would be awful. They had to handicap the m/kb users to “balance” them out with controllers - and they still murdered them. IF a game were to implement such a mechanic, they would need 3 server options - m/kb only, controllers only, and mixed. Mixed servers would have no controller options, like auto-aim. It would just be skill vs skill. All those console players who think they could do just as well vs a m/kb player, would put their money where there mouth is.
Problem is chicken and egg though. Developers don’t want to support stuff like M+KB and Cross Platform because there isn’t the perceived need for it. Gamer’s don’t need it because they aren’t exposed to it.
We’re going to need a very popular game to come out with this sort of stuff included before there is any motivation to change the status quo. I’m frankly stunned Sony hasn’t pushed it with the PS3 and games such as Killzone and MAG but we’ll maybe see what Portal 2 and Steam integration brings to PSN.
