Dedicated Servers for Consoles?

(meisterbrau) #21

i didn’t read that post well enough. so the console were not sold to solely be used as a dedicated server. the same console runing games could be used as a dedicated server. but if you used the console as a dedicated server, you could only host a game, and not play it at the same time on that machine.

would be interesting to know, if the current gen would principally allow this feature. I don’t understand why it is not used anymore. probably not many people used this option those days…

It doesn’t solve the main problem which is limited bandwidth in regular households. I don’t think you can rent consoles in data centres.

It would make sense to be able to host dedicated servers for the console versions on PCs though.

Like what Section 8 have done.

there are people out there, that have a reasonable good upload speed at home. upload rates go up allmost every half a year now. As we get optical wires now (Zurich), the uplaod rate will probably go up again

so a console running as dedicated server could make sense in some cases. for competitive online games this solved also the problem, that the host of a game usually had a small advantage.

a pc hosting xbox 360 games will unfortunatly never happen. microsoft won’t open their live network. this network is a money cow. so they won’t open it. But splashdamage or bethesda could host servers, as its done with the battlefield series on the xbox 360. They all run on servers hosted by ea.

(DarkangelUK) #25

Maybe there’s a reason it was never taken onboard for consoles?

(signofzeta) #26

Didn’t RTCW tides of war for xbox have dedicated consoles? I can let my original xbox run, and it in itself is the dedicated server, but no one wants to keep their consoles on for a very long time, and that is the reason why dedicated servers on a console never caught on.

(H0RSE) #27

I know games can be cross platform (Shadowrun) so is it possible to run the game on PC servers for the console community? Maybe a modded version of the game, that is the console version, that runs on a PC, or something like that? I mean, I am a PC gamer at heart, but something like dedicated servers should be something ALL gamers can enjoy. I would love to be able to browse hundreds of servers of running games on my xbox. Separate them by ping or players. Have filters…like PC fgames have. Rather than it automatically connecting me to a dedicated server, and I have no choice or info about it.

Dedicated servers are one reason we play on PCs rather than consoles

(DarkangelUK) #29

I remember the Dreamcast version of Quake 3 was built on the 1.16n patch, iD released the DC map pack and you could not only play with DC players, but also host your own servers which showed up in the server browser (gg’z Railyardz). Since it was only a 4 player game, you got pretty decent pings as well, and you could also launch a 2nd instance of the game and play with 0 ping \o/

(meisterbrau) #30

as far as i remember, it was planed, that shadow run will be cross plattform, but did it realy happen?

when i was playing et i allways joined the same server. i knew the people there, had a good ping, liked the campain settings and i liked the server-name (kreiswehrersatzamt

so i actually had no need for hunderts of servers to chose from. i like the system now implemented by most games on the 360, where you create a lobby with your friends and get than connected to some other players randomly (or by matching skills). this is a quite efficient way to get into a game quickly without browsing server lists and you allways play with your friends.

but still dedicated servers hosted by bethesda or splashdamage would be great! i would even be willing to pay for this service!

(Nail) #31

Shadowrun is a poor example of cross-platform, Microsoft only ran four sixteen slot servers and you had to subscribe to Windows Live, you could host your own server but Microsoft charged you to do it on top of your Live subscription. Not a business model I’d back.

(H0RSE) #32

But at least give me info on the server I am connecting to. For example, when I play Bad Company on xbox, it will search for a game, and then automatically connect me to a game. I don’t how many players are in it, where it is located, whats the ping, what map it is on, etc. At least give me a heads up before connecting me.

(meisterbrau) #33

true. especially with games, that actually have dedicated servers it is quite pointless to get connected then to a server standing in australia or the us when you are located in europe.

rainbow six had the option to filter language specific. so when you where hosting a game you had the option to specify the language. when i was searching for a game i could choose to only see german servers, which in most cases also meant, that the console hosting the game was located in europe.

this was a quite nice feature not present any more in any xobx game. there are quite a lot of people wishing this feature back, especially european gamers

I have to say, as online console gaming gets bigger and bigger due to it’s hassle free accessability, more and more people are learning the difference between playing p2p and on dedicated servers. I can tell you from experience where p2p is concerned it’s mostly won by those with the better connection especially if not regionalised and is far more open to exploitation in terms of lag. At least if it was run (like all games should be nowadays) on dedicated regionalised servers the differences in ping are minimized therefore creating a far fairer, fun and more comfortable gaming experience for everyone, which in turn would keep them returning to replay again and again, rather than playing for a few weeks till they finally get fed up of the lag caused by this type of system and hoping off to the next new title. I for one really like what I have seen of BRINK alot, but am really concerned that it will die after a couple of months to a hardcore few thousand players because of the use of the p2p system. I personally would deal with whatever it took to employ a dedicated regional server system, please oh please guys at least look into and consider it for the the sake of the game and the fans existing and potential.

W:ET has hundreds of servers to choose from, and one of those hundreds of servers is now your preference. But if there were only [arbitrary]ten[/arbitrary] servers to choice from, would the right one be part of that?

What would the advantage of a beth or SD server be over a regular hosted (dedicated) server?

(CAL1973) #36

M8, by the looks of your awards you’ve been here for a good while, how could you not understand what the benefits of having Bethesda or SD run dedicated severs would be as opposed to privately hosted dedicated servers. Here is a example I own 2 PS’s I could use 1 to host and 1 to play, effectively nulifying the reason games like RSV had this option i.e. I might aswell be hosting p2p . The whole reason dedicated servers are so important nowadays is to create a fairer gaming experience for everyone if localised which they should be. MW2 is a great example it may be popular yet still be p2p, how can this be, easy it’s the way they deal with/mask the lag. MW2 is fundamentally a very well constructed game but to those with any knowledge of server systems is cheating it’s players into believing they were simply not quick enough or paying enough attention. The fact of the matter is unless you have a very comprehensive match-making system that chooses people from your direct area all the time your in for a bumpy ride, ye I know it 's not gonna happen because not everyone in your area is playing at the same time or searches at the exact same moment and that in itself is why dedicated servers are so important to atleast minimise these problems

(Mustang) #37

Hmm, I don’t think may of us would say there prefer P2P over dedicated
But what has hosting a server on your spare PS3 got to do with, as Florisjuh say, a regular dedicated server?

(CAL1973) #38

O.k. what would be the difference between a regular (HOSTED) and a Bethesda/SD dedicated server?, apart from the obvious point that it would be first party run and maintained

(Nail) #39

when people here speak of dedicated servers, they usually mean PC Server banks used to run games like W:ET, if console gamers had access to these, there would be much joy. As it is, for consoles it means a console in your house hosting a game, very dependant on your upload speed

(Floris) #40

Sorry but I guess my post was a bit ambiguous. I am a proponent of dedicated servers hosted by GSP’s, but still having each server owned by a person or clan, so they can customize the server to their liking. Kinda like it was done in W:ET and the traditional CoD games on the PC.
