Dedicated Server Info?

(Strogg) #1

Is there any Dedicated Server Info? I assume it will have Dedicated Server software for download like most fps games. I was just wondering how much bandwidth intensive the Dedicated Server will be. My upstream bandwidth is 1.5 megs and downstream 8 megs downstream. It will be running a AMD 4400 dual core with 1 gig of ram under windows XP. Was just wondering how many users I would be able to host the above system configuration.

Thanks in advance

the info will be giefed when it’s done, the game is not done yet afaik (unless it’s done and SD is busy playing it instead of announcing gold)

I always assume between 64 kbps and 128 kbps per player slot.
that’s a max rate of 8000 and 16000 (bytes/s) respectivly which are common settings for similar games.

The equation is not linear, so a maxrate of 8000 might be enough for small fights, but might not be enough for a 32 player server. More stuff happens, so more stuff needs to be sent to each player.

Remember to take quality into consideration. You can have a laggy big server, or a very good small server. Both have their pros/cons.

Connection is usually the limiting factor before any other resources, but to avoid lag spikes, it’s best if the server is not used for anything else. That goes for the connection AND cpu cycles.

That’s about right, except I like my rates a little higher, up to 25000, depending on the number of players and the connection you have. On bigger servers you need lower rates, obviously. Another thing to consider is hardware performance. Get SCSI or SATA Raptor HDD’s and set them up in a RAID configuration to eliminate loading times. Get quality RAM that won’t overheat (since the server will be running for 24-hours.) That should be enough power to run a really great dedicated server.

Here is an example of a great server that holds between 48-64 players comfortably:
