Deciding on if I should play?

(DirtyLarry) #1

hello all,

I am hoping this thread does not get deleted, as I am asking this with the utmost of sincerity as a long time fan of enemy territory, a level 8 veteran of the battlefield series, and someone who put in over 200 hours on counter strike source including running my own server at one point. My point in sharing all of these facts are simply to convey not only my love for MP shooters, but especially ones with a team based focus.

I finally picked this game up since it was on sale at amazon for $20 a few days ago. To me that was a no brainer. However when I shared this fact at a tech forum I am a long time and veteran staff member of, literally the consensus was unanimous. Every single person said return the game and get my $20 back. The thing is, I want to enjoy the game. I truly do. I miss the days of enemy territory, if you check my profile you will see I am in my late 30’s. I am not into the COD crowd, I prefer playing with gamers who focus on the team aspect of things.

With that said, I also do not have the time I once did. So I am not able to be competitive really. I hold my own, but the days of being a dominant player are long gone. I need a game I can hop on here and there, contribute to the team, and enjoy.

So my questions are relatively simple.

Is it easy enough to find games at any time?
Are those games friendly to “noobs,” meaning as a community, will you welcome a new player with open arms? Or is the community already set in stone?

My games for window package remains unopened. I am inclined to open it regardless, but I come here asking the opinion of those who have stuck with it. Is it worth playing?

TIA, and I do hope the moderators do not choose to delete this right away.
DL

You can use Steamworks server browser to see what sort of games are available. Right now 8:30 pm MST, the biggest game that I ping less than 150ms to has 6 players, but that’s a coop server. The biggest MP game has 4 people in it…

Game is dead. And it seems that’s how Bethsoft wants it.

(Hakkai) #3

Sad to say it is dead. Just been scanning severs to play on but nothing.
Hope you can get your money back =/

(DirtyLarry) #4

Damn. One of the people I asked told me it was dead in the water but I did not think he meant literally. Thank you both for the very fast responses and the honesty. I believe I have, unfortunately, a very clear answer to my questions.

Again thanks.

there’s a few people on PC around here that are still enjoying playing…you might wait for them to weigh in - you have 30 days to decide with amazon’s return policy, right?

Im on PS3 and I thoroughly enjoy the game, but there are matchmaking issues that were just bad design decisions that very much limit the number of players in a match. I say get the game, but thats just from my enjoyment. The PC version doesn’t have matchmaking though so I really cant say what the community is like on there.

(Mr. Magikarp) #7

I’m on PC and I love the game. The only problem is that the playerbase has decided that even though most of the game’s problems have been fixed, they don’t think it’s worth it to give the game another shot. So, really, it’s a lack of players that is the problem, but you can help with that!

(burawura) #8

Objective mode spawn times and poor gun mechanics make pubbing a bore after awhile. You may have fun while learning the game, but once you get to the point of wanting to be “competitive”, there isn’t much you can do.

In the last week it’s become difficult to find good servers, which is simply crazy. I enjoy the game, and have been in 8v8mp matches every day- but it does seem to be a little harder. Not sure why it’s happened so recently.

(Hakkai) #10

I knew the player count would drop when TF2 went f2p. The DLC would have to be life changing to resurrect this game

(kilL_888) #11

i guess it depends on where you live.

im from germany and i have ~20 servers with more than 2 people playing, with ping under 100.

in the afternoon and evening i have problems joining my favorite servers, because they are full. dont want to play coop with bots, so i have to wait a few minutes sometimes or join a server i usually dont play on.

but its true. there are less than 10 servers in the german/europe region with ~16 players and with decent ping. consider this.

even though the servers i want to play on are full sometimes, i am always able to play if i want to. against other humans of course.

(eys) #12

I still enjoy it. There aren’t a lot of full servers around, but it’s not like I’ve ever had a problem getting into a full one. When ever I play, I can get a 16 human player match instantly.

(Smoochy) #13

some decent games on the PC still. just because the cod boys dont like it doesnt mean its a bad game. the game is actually loads of fun and a nice change from brainless shooters

if you want an objective based team game then brink is the best around at the moment

(neg0ne) #14

Hey Dirty Larry,

from what i read in your post, Brink is THE Game for you.
Coming from ETQW it needs some aclimatisation, but it hit all the points you make,
its all about tamplay and you can have fun and be supportive not beeing a kick-ass-aimgood.

but:
the low playerbase is true. Here in Europe on PC its not that bad. You will always find a game.

It´s sad. Brink has enourmous potential and after some patches and fixes the worst issues are solved. But most people complaining about it either didn´t “get” the Game ( "uh, its not like COD, BF2, XYZ ), where pushed away by the bad release or are just parroting what others say.

To me as a casual gamer with real-life and not the youngst anymore its ok to have maybe 3 fav. servers to play on. maybe check the Serv Brows in Steam ( not shure if its accurate ) again and give it a go. Its 20 Bucks your risking and maybe you´ll find THE game for you.

(FireWorks) #15

If 20bucks dont mean the world to you, play it and see for yourself. Its very enjoyable and every player is welcome

(DirtyLarry) #16

Hey, thanks again to everyone for the responses.
I believe after reading the most recent set of responses, I am going to install it when I get home tonight. I am just going to check Steamworks servers and see what the deal is when I do so.

As FireWorks alluded to, and I realize I am fortunate this is the case, $20 is not going to make or break me, and I see a few positive responses here about the PC side of things which is what I will be playing, so all I need is one solid server to play on. And I actually believe a small community playing it still is not necessarily a bad thing, it means those people are playing the game the way it is meant to be played and enjoying doing so, so that actually says to me I will have a better time than if it was a huge community with a ton of servers to choose from.

Thanks again everyone. I look forward to possibly playing with a few of you.

(FireWorks) #17

If youre an EU player and you need a hand, Id be happy to help. See you on the servers:)

(DirtyLarry) #18

Oh just one thing I wanted clarification on. Is SLi definitely working with this game?
I see EVGA released their SLi Enhancement patch for the game itself, but that was a few drivers back. When i check the release notes of the latest beta drivers, I see no mention of Brink. When I google the EVGA Ehancement patch, I see more comments about how it did nothing than people saying it worked. I realize people take to forums generally speaking to be negative, you hardly read anyone posting just to say something works, so just wondering if anyone can confirm if SLi is working with the game.

(DirtyLarry) #19

Thanks. I am in the US, but I am on the East Coast in NJ, and generally speaking I have always been able to play on EU servers with no issues of latency or lag, so I will try the EU servers as well.

(FireWorks) #20

Sorry, dont know about this one… My EVGA 560 is absolutly sufficient with 120+ on low config
