Dealing With Quitters

(adhesive) #221

i forgot doesnt this game have a player lock players can leave but not join when the game starts or something. if so i think thats pretty f-in stupid on the game devs part.

(SockDog) #222

Not that I’m aware of. Bots will fill in gaps but players can join at whatever point during a map.

In regards to playing for fun. This is exactly what I want but people’s definition of fun includes, “grrrrr this sucks. /quit”. The discussion has pretty much run its course anyway so I’m not going to dig up past arguments, just wanted to say that people quitting does impact the rest of the server and if their own moral/sporting values won’t prevent them I don’t know what some fictitious reward system will do.

I think the only “game-lock” is like if one team has 2 players and another has 6, you can’t join the team with more players.

Quiters just show a complete lack of sportsmanship and sportsmanship determines a great deal of the game.

(INF3RN0) #225

I don’t think you can expect e-sportsmanship, and especially not in pub play. As long as this thread is, I don’t think its nearly important enough to be worth SD time. The game is meant to be fun and as this issue has more to do with an initial unbalance causing people to rage or just people having to leave for good reason; punishment is just dumb. No one likes those guys who rage, but making a better balance feature would be more beneficial than black marking the “quitters” who you were probably better off without anyways.

I don’t think it hurts to brainstorm, discuss and argue the issue.

For me the issue of rage quitting is that of sportsmanship and good conduct. Seems an ever increasing trend that being a dick is just part of online gameplay. Such apathy towards it won’t make it go away. Sure bots help balance out the effects and we definitely don’t want players forced to stay on the server but not necessarily play. As fans of multi-player games though we should take more responsibility for how our own conduct affects those we’re playing with.

The official stats for once could be useful by displaying the total number of midgame quits of a player near his nickname using LARGE fontsize on a most visible place of the page

(tokamak) #228

you can reward e-sportmanship. A statistic showing you’ve left very few matches during your time online is a great reward. The beauty of making the reward a statistic is that it will appeal especially to those who care about the statistics. So quiting because it might harm your stats will be out of the question while the people who ragequit because they genuinely had a bad game can still do so without suffering.

Indeed, the whole point of multiplayer is playing against live humans, winning and losing of live humans is way more thrilling than winning or losing from a bot. Using bots to solve human misbehavior only solves a part of the problem.

i hope they dont allow bots. people who care about their stats are tools! it also creates stat farmers:armadillochase:<<<<----

(Reanimator) #230

I don’t think I’ve had any problems with rage-quitting on the PS3, so I don’t particularly see the need for it to be a statistic, but that may a different story on the PC.

(tokamak) #231

You can people’s obsession with stats to train them into the right behaviour, as long as you reward them for the right stuff farming stats will be a good thing as it means they’ll be playing the game right.

So add the ‘number of midgame disconnects’ and let’s hope they’ll pride themselves on the low number in the same way the pride themselves on how few teamkills they’ve made.

Well let’s put it this way, there isn’t a significant downside to it either. If you don’t care about the statistic then it isn’t meant for you as you won’t be quiting games to save your stats, if you do leave games because of your statistics, then here’s one to make you think twice about leaving.
