Damn I dont think Ill have a good enough video card!

(JNDK22) #1

For Quake Wars! I saw the specs they were using at E3, I plan on buying a new video card thats an agp. Can anybody recommend one that MAY play Quake Wars even thou we dont have a list of cards yet, maybe one for sure we know that will play it?

(JNDK22) #2

I meant one that may be so powerful it has to play it.

I think you’re very much over reacting m8. They use top of the line PC’s to show off their game. It by no means reflects the minimum requirements to play the game.

(JNDK22) #4

True. But I just want to be prepared, can you recommend a card?

(kamikazee) #5

Not at the moment. We might have an occult ritual this weekend, I’ll ask the gods if they can show us the minimum specs. (Rest asured, no tapirs would ever be sacrificed for such a thing)

Ok, now serious. I guess that there are only few people around who can confirm something, starting with the SD team.
Those probably won’t answer untill they know they’re sure. To be sure, the game needs to be optimized… which could take some time. Starting from that, cards can be tested which are “on the borderline”.

So you could be waiting quite long before you get a serious answer. I wouldn’t want to recommend a card which wouldn’t work in the end.
And for more info, contact the local gipsy in your neighbourhood.

So AGP. It would be nice to tell your current pc config, maybe its not even worth to upgrade… Anyways AGP i would say 7800GS, i dont think there is anything better for AGP.

I have 1 gig memory, 3.2 pentium.

I guess minimum graphics card will be a 9800 Pro or alike. But sd can correct me if I’m wrong.

AGP, what card do you have at the minute?
Have you played Doom3 or Quake4?
What FPS do you get on those?

6600GT - £100-£130 - This should be the minimum card you consider, and very nice it is too
6800GT - £150-180
7800GS - £210-£320- Hey big spender - just about as far as AGP will go i reckon

My current card is an ati radeon 9600

I wouldn’t consider 7800GS unless you really have a good CPU to benefit from it. I’ve been doing some research (reviews), and it seems my CPU (Barton 2800+) is a bottleneck for 7800GS, so I could as well buy 6800. If you have a 64bit cpu (socket 754 or better; ) you may consider 7800Gs, otherwise I wouldn’t bother.
But I decided to make the switch to PCI-E.

(GlobalWar) #13

The difference between the 7800GS and 6800GS is VERY minimal when it comes to FPS in D3 and Q4.

(fattakin) #14

i think i’ll have a nosey at the 6800 series as well as i cant upgrade the rest of my machine so no point in paying for a bottleneck!

(Gringo) #15

I should bloody well hope not!

(Domipheus) #16

Ive got a 6600 GT and it plays quake 4 on high detail very well (40+ fps most of the time). So if you are on a budget I would deffo reccommend this.

(ayatollah) #17

I have a 9800pro and it can play Doom 3 and Quake 4 in high detail…never checked FPS but seemed fine…

FEAR on the other hand…machine heated up to the max and all sounds slowed down even freinds talking on vent…once I disconnected the computer shut down…and that was running at low detail on 800x600!

I would think QW will be fine with my setup though.

an Nvidia 6800/256MB/agp is a nice card for $100 US

(Joe999) #19

i’m more interested in the typical “id favors nvida” stuff. i mean i ran quake 4 in highest settings on an x800 pro without AA and had to switch off shadows because i got an occasional stutter. half life 2 and the half life 2 demo with hdr on the other hand went as smooth as smooth can be.

i hope there’ll be more support for ati cards in QW than typically usual for id games.

they ship to the UK?
